In 37 years, no-one's come up with a plan to extinguish and cap that?
At very least, harvest the heat to run a turbine and generate some power.

"Do you like bootblacking?"
"I like it very much."

Or close to it, been a while. I often quote it inappropriately and often.

One of those pictures is begging to have Frodo, his pal and Gulum (however it's spelled, that ugly little thing) photoshopped on it. Surely someone who isn't at work and has skills can get this done.

Those who take a look at the main page, linked here, may see in the January 4 entry (NSFW) evidence of a different sort of crater than submitter chose to publicize.

From bravians link...The recognizable smell of burning natural gas can be detected from a distance and becomes quite strong as you near the hot edge of the crater.

I thought that recognizable stink was added.

/what's up with that?

This is in Turkmenistan? I wonder if the Great Turkmenbashi threw any political prisoners there. That would be a hell of a public execution.

That's for before it burns. I suppose a natural gas well would contain sulfur so if it burns with an uncontrolled oxygen/gas ratio it might generate hydrogen sulfide, ie rotten eggs. I guess they remove the sulfur before selling it.
