Very cool. I wonder how tiny the pinhole had to be to allow a six month exposure.

That is very awesome.

Now, that's a farking pinhole image. Not that other bullshiat people tried to pass off.

0.25mm

Still sounds large to me for 6 months...

.25mm is standard.

Yeah...a six month exposure. It had to have been a special photo paper w/ very low sensitivity to light. I mean, pinhole cameras in general need long exposures w/ normal film because so little light gets in, but six months??

I like the breaks in the sun sweeps - must be where clouds blotted the sun out for a while.

I also imagine he had to cover the whole apparatus with something to keep the weather/bugs out--maybe that cut the exposure a bit?

that's pretty darn cool. it's like an abridged version of timelapse.

/why don't i get cool ideas like this?

Paper negs take awhile to expose and 1/4 millimeter is awfully small.

And you could always use Google (new window)

Give me the best gear money can buy and I still couldn't produce a picture half as cool compared with what he did with a homemade pinhole camera. I simply don't have a photographer's eye.

Dayum. That's gotta be like ISO 10. Or something.

/knows nothing about pinhole photography

the best gear money can buy couldn't produce an image like that. Pinhole is very non-sophisticated.
coolest picture I have seen all year, though....

Love that pic. Proves you don't need $5000 worth of equipment to capture a beautiful shot.

That bridge itself is quite a marvel as well. Been across it several times. Dude that designed it really knew his shiat.

Mr Quinnell, a world-renowned pin-hole camera artist, of Falmouth, Cornwall, said the photograph took on a personal resonance after his father passed away on April 13 - halfway through the exposure.

He says the picture allows him to pinpoint the exact location of the sun in the sky at the moment his father passed away.

What a sad ending to a wonderful project.

There is no lens, even one made of unicorn juice and dreams, that can compare to a pinhole camera. It's just the basic mechanics of how light works. It has the same infinite depth as nature because it IS nature.

So don't beat yourself up. NO ONE could do that with the best camera equipment. But you could prolly pull it off with an empty can and a tiny needle.

If anyone can find a wallpaper-sized version of this photo, you get major brownie points.

Photo paper is about 12 ASA. In my own pinhole cameras, I use a laser-cut 300 micron microscope lens which is about 0.3 mm. See top three pics in profile for examples. Props for the dedication to this project.

"Goats see" through the precise opposite of a "tiny pinhole". Or so I'm told.

TheCoolGoof 2009-01-04 11:16:51 AM
Why is that cool? Maybe I'm just having a boring day but calling that picture stunning seems over the top. And I'm a fan of the pinhole camera ever since I made one in middle school.

Of course if he tried that in Boston the terrorist task force would have something to say.

Y'all should go to the photographer's web page. There are a lot more examples. Plus this dedication by the photog: "To my father who died 116 sunrises into this project and my brother Paul who so loved the heavens he has gone to get a closer look." sniffle.

Mister Awesome:

Thank you!

Can anyone explain why the Sun makes two curves? I'm thinking it's not due to the light bending in the atmosphere (there would be three curves?), but due to the Earth not being a perfect ball?

How do you know the goat isn't lying to you about their vision? For that matter, how are you bridging the language barrier?

Well, I know because I used to live in WV and learning to speak Goat was necessary if I wanted any kind of action on the weekends. But that's only because I don't have a sister. I have a brother but I ain't no homo, what kind of freak do you think I am?

Thats an 827: What was the speed of the film or did he use a ND filter?

Why are you asking this forum? If it's not in the article, you think someone on Fark knows the guy personally and asked him these questions? Oh wait, you just wanted to show off your knowledge of photography.

At least you're not alone in your show-and-tell.

Even better, there's a camera you can actually stand inside right near where that picture was taken:
