I bet if you lived in a civilized town instead of soem huge megacity, any cop you approached with thanks and kindness would be glad of a hug.

Our LEO get shot down by those who have never had to work a day's life, and don't care to. They're scorned by the ones they protect, and vilified by those they rescue.

It's a really sad and disappointing situation for all the LEOs I know...some of them have found a kind of solace in just remembering that they are doing the right thing, and I'm sure some cry themselves to sleep at night.

It's only ever the "BIG" news stories that get anyone talking about LEOs and their duties. And more often than not, the media publish stories where LEOs were misinformed, unprepared, or made mistakes. They're much less likely to publish stories where the LEOs saved lives, comforted the sick and dying, prevented further injury, or aided firefighters, medics, and flight crews to get the sick, hurt, and dying to help faster.

I hug a cop all the time. My dad retired in '02, but before that, he was a cop for thirty years. Won a buttload of awards, too...because he was an exceptional one.

So the haters can suck it. I grew up around cops, and they were some of the most selfless, upstanding people I've ever known, my dad chief among them.

Well, he wasn't CHIEF, but you know what I mean.

I've spent time in large towns, liberal college towns, suburbia, and small-as-heck, it's-a-40-minute-drive-to-an-office-supply-store town. \

I judge everyone on their own actions, cops included, although I approach them a bit warily because my life could easily be - at least temporarily - wrecked even if it was a he said / she said scenario.

And I've met decent cops, and douchebag cops, in every type of city, town, and village.

Hell, I've even met both types on the exact same highway in the exact same state an hour apart.

One ticketed us for going 4 mph over. The plates marked that the car was state-owned, but of course, it wasn't -that- state.

An hour later, when the driver was on the shoulder trying to figure out what the hell she was doing, another cop stopped to make sure we were alright, that it wasn't really legal to be stopped the way we were on the shoulder unless it was an emergency, and informed her that she was going in the wrong direction after he found out where we were supposedly headed.

I was cursing all the cops in the state an hour prior, but that snapped me back to reality pretty damn quick. Nice guy.

Nature of the job.... If they are arresting someone they have to be in DICK MODE.

No one wants to be arrested... and if the cop isn't asserting their Alpha Male/Female status, things can get ugly fast.

I don't care if a cop is a teddy bear with a heart of gold, or the biggest prick in the world... if he does his job honestly, doesn't abuse his power, and isn't on the take or covering for someone who is, he's a good cop.

Unfortunately, shockingly few cops fill all of these criteria.

Try this: One night when you and your dad are having a few, and he's loosened up a little, ask him if he ever knew of anyone in his department who was a little crooked. Taking a little bribe, giving suspects a little extra with the stick for not cooperating... that kind of thing.

If he says "yes" (and he will), ask if he turned the guy in to IA. If he didn't, your dad was a crooked cop.

Having gone to a state school in IL with a major law enforcement program, I can testify that this is certainly an issue and corresponds 1:1 with cops being over-aggressive assholes.

just like with Lawyers, most people hate them until they need them.

and, you will ALL need a police officer and/or a lwayer one day.

that said, just like with all types of human beings, i would say most are good. it's the minority that make the news and are the ones you remember.

//not a cop OR a lwayer, just to clarify.

cenobyte40k 2009-01-04 12:12:16 PM
I don't hate cops, they have a tough job. I just don't like them taking it out on people they are suppose to protect and serve. Now that I am a 'professional' white middle aged male I get all the respect I need from officers 99.99% of the time. But when I was 18 I got harrassed, illegally detained, searched without probable cause or permission all because they knew they could get away with it. So yeah I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. Power corrupts, and seeing the bad side in everything makes you kind of a jerk. It sucks for them but it sucks even worst to be on the other side of their abuse of power.

When I say all cops should have cameras and mikes attached to them at all times it's not because I don't respect or understand how hard to job is, it's because I know what it's like to be abused by power and have there be nothing you can do about it.

Taking an oath to enforce morally bankrupt laws just proves your lack of moral fiber. Troll yourself.

Freak out/Tazer? Hmmm... Unlikely. That said, it is NOT a good idea to just walk up to a police officer and attempt physical contact of ANY kind. We WILL react negatively, and attempt a rapid replacement of a reactionary gap. Far too many smiling faces have been attached to bodies carrying weapons to be used on us, trying to take our weapons.

Sad that we have to work like that, but minimal human contact with nice people is simply part of the job. We like to go home at night to our families.

Would you have the Law Enforcement Officers of your area pick and choose which laws they wish to enforce, based solely on their own personal beliefs?

YOUR personal belief that certain laws (drug offenses?) are "morally bankrupt" is simply that.. your opinion. The vast majority of citizenry in your area support the laws as they stand, else they would march to city hall and demand they be changed. If you don't like the laws, change them from within the system.

Meanwhile, be happy that officers of the law still come to the aid of people in need... even if the officers know the people they are helping are known criminals, whose past actions are "morally bankrupt".

Obviously, there are good cops and bad cops. Crappy cops get the bulk of the media attention. Crappy cops are almost always the ones that people talk about when they talk about encounters with the police.

Maybe it's because I live in a fairly quiet area, but the cops that are in my district are pretty cool. They don't seem to be on some asinine crusade.

One super-suck job they have is to have to go to a house when there is an "unattended death" - when my Mom passed away, two officers had to come by and ask some questions to make sure no one had offed her in her sleep. I will never forget how kind they were and how very well they handled having to ask those really awkward questions.

It would be nice if the media could focus more on the good cops, but that doesn't make for "hard hitting news"...

Sorry, but cops aren't victims of bad press, they ARE thugs, bullies and tools of oppression. In 47 years I have NEVER once had a positive experience with a cop, even when I was the victim of a crime. The idea that cops "protect" you is a MYTH. Protect you how?

Examples:

-- My house was robbed and I couldn't even get the cops to come out and take a police report (which you must have for insurance purposes) until my lawyer finally convinced them to do it. I was told later by the sheriff himself that home break-ins are not their problem and they make no attempt to follow up such crimes. I asked why and he told me "they are a low priority." If this was NYC I might accept that, but this was a wealthy suburban city with a generally low crime rate and a very well paid police force.

-- In a different city, my car was stolen and the local police told me that they do not pursue stolen vehicle cases and make no attempt to look for the car. Later my car was found in an empty parking lot miles away. The cops phoned me at 3am and told me I had 30 minutes to come get it or it would be towed and I would have to pay for the tow and impound. At the scene I asked the cop attending if they were going to do anything like take fingerprints. She laughed and told me I "watch too much TV", then left.

-- When I was a teen a friend and I were attacked by a mugger with a knife. I fought the guy off and suffered a huge gash in my arm that was pouring blood. We called the cops from a payphone and they never showed up.

-- I was once in a big car wreck when I was t-boned by a guy who ran a red light. The cop who arrived had no interest in seeing if I was injured, he was too busy telling me he would ticket me if I didn't move the vehicle (which was DOA and couldn't even be pushed).

-- I had a flat tire on a freeway in Washington state and a state trooper pulled up behind me. He didn't offer to help, he just told me to hurry up or I would be cited.

That's just a few examples. I have MANY more, yet I have NO examples of a cop being helpful or even "protecting" me, my family or my property from crime of any sort.

Oh and spare me the BS of how the presence of cops deters crime. Cops serve only one real function -- revenue. They fill city coffers with money from tickets, while the only real crimes they bother with are the very most extreme. The kinds of crime you and I will encounter in our lives are mostly ignored.

So how are the cops "protecting" me again?
