The best part? The driver's side sun visor has an airbag warning that says the safest place for children is in the "back seat."

/That should merit car age reduction points.

Haha! My 93 Honda is ~75 years old. This strikes me as hilarious, and therefore, time to go to bed.

Tourney3p0 2009-01-04 02:53:00 AM
This is stupid. A car from the 70's with few miles on it would almost certainly have all the internal seals rotted out. Likewise, consider a car with 130,000 miles on it:

1980:
130000/1980 = 65.65

2008:
130000/2008 = 64.7

Less than a year difference. Clearly the age of the car has little affect at all within this formula, in which case you may as well base it on miles alone. And for low mileage garage queens, they're probably in worse shape than if it had a hundred thousand miles on it.

And at this point I realize I should start calling my Mustang Moses.

Atheist_Republican [TotalFark] 2009-01-04 03:04:09 AM
I hate to be a negative nancy, but the equation is really more about the mileage than the car year.

Take a car with 120,000 miles on it. If you could take the earliest possible widescale production model, 1902 Oldsmobile, versus a 2009 model...1902 is 63 years old, 2009 is 59 years old.

But you know...whatever! =P

Foaming [TotalFark] 2009-01-04 03:04:11 AM
The year of the car is almost irrelevant in that formula. You might as well just divide everything by 2000 to make your life easier.

Truck: about 75
Car: about 21

Try using the four digit date. Brings it down to 81.

The question to be asked is how lame is this article.

LarrytheBlueOkie 2009-01-04 03:43:12 AM
This formula is faulty. It does not take into account the wear and tear on the engine as it ages or what level of maintenance is performed on said car. Figure that the average mileage per year (again, an average) on a vehicle is 10,000 miles. Therefore, your 2008 Whatveritis divided into an average mileage is (10,000/2008)equals a human age of 4.98 years. But, since a vehicle is generally not "broken in" until around 50k miles or so, this easy formula proves false. I would think that instances of routine maintenance, especially on the engine (oil changes, anti-freeze, etc.-think in terms of checkups at the doctor's offcie), would have to figure into creating a viable formula to properly calculate a vehicle's human age. Consequently, I teach high school social studies and not math, so come up with something better, jalopnik...
