You'd think a house built by celebrities would be just as good as one built by professional builders. Will wonders never cease?

/we should just give these welfare folks more money

2wolves 2009-01-03 06:14:58 PM
You'd think teaching folks how to take care of a home, and making maintenance mandatory, would be part of the deal.

Silly me.

Il Douchey [TotalFark] 2009-01-03 06:22:56 PM
Poor Jimmy Carter, it just gets worse and worse and worse. April Charney and her money grubbing clients should remember that beggars can't be choosers. It's socialized housing, what did you expect?

/Those who are riding in the wagon should never biatch at those who are pulling the wagon. Sit down and shut up or get out and pull.

Talk about looking a gift house in the mouth.

Sword and Shield 2009-01-03 06:28:56 PM
Ah, Habitat. I've done a good bit of work on these houses after they're built. I've never yet seen a square jamb or a plumb wall. The builders simply don't know how, and even if they do well, the owners often trash the place.

DrRatchet [TotalFark] 2009-01-03 06:29:28 PM
ALL houses crumble and need constant upkeep. These peeps think they have it rough? They should talk to the owners of some of those tract houses built during the housing bubble.

StormnMormon [TotalFark] 2009-01-03 06:30:25 PM
I think the houses should still meet a reasonable standard, even if it is free. i mean a house that was built on a dump? TFA says a guy lifted a floorboard and found part of a dump....

To those of you who think these people should stop complaining and maintaining their homes.... RTFA

Eight years later it is better known for cockroaches, mildew and mysterious skin rashes.

and

One man pulled up his floorboards to find rubbish 5ft deep under his kitchen. Other complaints include cracking walls and rotting door frames that let in rats and ants. Many residents have complained of mildew and mysterious skin rashes.

All this after only 8 years?

Also.... people who live in Habitat homes aren't exactly going to have money to repair issues created by poor workmanship and design.

whatshisname 2009-01-03 06:33:43 PM
Low income housing that's in bad repair? What a surprise.

UM...
Dear Habitat for Humanity,
I am poor. Build me a house. I won't complain. I know how to take care of a house. I use to have one. There is an economic crisis at foot. I would love a house. Especially a free house. A roof, water and some ac is all I need. Thank you.
Sincerely,
JO

Yes, houses need maintenance, but I own a 50 year old house that doesn't have mold and wasn't built on a dump. Also, HFH owners have to kick in the labor for their homes, and sign a mortgage that they have to pay. It's cheaper than the average mortgage, but it ain't a "free" house. From their website:

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.

Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor-sweat equity-into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.

If they built homes that go to hell in less than 10 years, they wasted their time.

RatMotor 2009-01-03 06:39:26 PM
Cockroaches and mildew? In Florida? Now that's just crazy talk.

\Kill, kill, kill the poor

T-Luv 2009-01-03 06:39:38 PM
What are their damages? How much money are they out? Did Habitat for Humanity have a duty to keep up these houses after they gave them away? I don't think these people have a case.

flypusher713 2009-01-03 06:39:48 PM
I RTFA. It's not clear whether it's a quality of building issue or a maintenance issue.

/own a house. Have to keep it maintained.

I doubt they realize that construction waste commonly falls down in the crawl spaces under a house, and no one cleans it up because it isn't a problem.

When I was a TV reporter we covered a big "Habitat" house being built by state lawmakers.

Now, I'm hardly Ty Pennington. I'm barely Schneider when it comes to home repair, but even my unskilled eye looked at the work being done and I thought "I wouldn't let my ex-girlfriend's dog live here. Her, sure, but not Muffin."

Habitat is a good idea. That is it.

Wait, so they're suing HBF because they built shiatty houses for themselves?

HFH, that should say

OgreMagi 2009-01-03 06:45:22 PM
How many of these houses are falling apart because of the lack of basic maintenance? Seriously? Were they built badly or were they built adequately and were allowed to fall apart?

Dil Doe 2009-01-03 06:45:38 PM
NEWSFLASH: HABITAT HOMES ARE NOT FREE.

Sorry to yell, but this is an extremely important fact. Homeowners everywhere in the world must qualify for interest-free mortgages. Costs of the homes are kept down by donated materials and labor, plus the fact that homeowners must put their own "sweat equity" into the home. You can learn much more about Habitat and how their program works on their web site.

They kicked in the labor for the shiatty house. But they should have had somebody in charge that knew what they were doing.

Close2TheEdge 2009-01-03 06:45:56 PM
They built the houses over a garbage dump. Apparently one where, ya know, the garbage was still....active. How the hell is any house supposed to hold up under those conditions. For once, this doesn't sound like the celebrities fault.

None of these houses were free, you morans. Every single Habitat for Humanity house comes with a mortgage.

A few in Florida come with some undocumented extras.

Yup, read that. It does come down to maintenance. If there were no cock roaches in the place when they moved in, and there are now. Then it stands to reason that the cockroaches moved in at some point in between.

Inside is a social construct. It is nature that owns all land. There are many more insects than people on this planet. Get used to it. Or keep your house clean and set traps on occasion.

Okey doke. What cleaning and traps do you set for "cracking walls and rotting door frames?"

Srsly - It is always the people that get everything for free, or at a HUGE discount, that biatch the most, and expect more. I have done a lot of volunteer/charity work, and been 'poor' myself; I call bullshiat.

Gumercules 2009-01-03 06:53:49 PM
To be fair, the Habitat houses in Orlando, expecially the Paramore area, have each and every one become a run down crack house in a matter of 5 years. The cops would not even go into one during a buust because it was so filthy. Had to get CSI guys in hazmat suits to go in.

These people up north are at least giving interviews and you know, still living in the houses.

I've got cracking walls and rotting door frames AND a $3,800 a month mortgage.

Houses require maintenance, no matter who built them.

LMark 2009-01-03 06:55:59 PM
I volunteered for Habitat a few times while I was in college, except instead of building a house, we were dismantling one (I know, I was doing it wrong). Seriously, some guy donated a house, but not the land, to Habitat. So we dismantled the house, so it could be shipped in pieces somewhere, and presumably, rebuilt. Dismantling can be fun.

So, poor people should not expect do-gooders to build them an adequate shelter at all, 'cause it's cheap? Then what was the point of this feel-good masturbation? Seriously. I can understand "basic" and "no frills," but not a shantytown. They wasted the donor's money and the recipient's labor and mortgage payments, when that person could have been living in an apartment that doesn't damage their health. But I forgot that this is fark, full of whiny middle-classed people who think the poor should go off somewhere and die.

X-boxershorts 2009-01-03 06:57:41 PM
The land was probably donated, An engineer somewhere HAD to put a signature on the lands use for homes.

That Engineer works for the state/county.

So...Florida tag, FTW!
