(The Sun) Interesting Robert Plant beats Freddie Mercury, Jagger and Axl to "Greatest Rock Voice." Interestingly enough, out of 40 people the youngest is Chris Cornell, in case some people thought rock n' roll wasn't on its last gasp   (thesun.co.uk) divider line 138

Soon enough Rock and Roll is going to sound to young people like "Yes! We Have no Bananas!" sounded like to us growing up.

Kids are going to use screeching "Are you ready to rock!?!" voices when they want to sound old-timey.

No.

Moving back to real singers....hard to argue that Plant is one of the most influential singers in rock, but if you ask him, he and other lilly white Brits would mention people like Willie Dixon, Little Richard, Otis Redding, Wilson Picket, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, etc.

With that said.......picking Freddie Mercury as better overall than Robert Plant is difficult to argue with. Queen songs were much more difficult to sing and he nailed every one of them.

/yeah I said " nailed "
//let the gay jokes fly I guess

True this. There are great singers, and then there are those who set trends. Janis was both. Think about how many female singers from the 70's and 80's owe their careers to Janis because of her ground breaking style.

I would have to go with Mercury on this one.

I guess I can live with Plant being considered the most influential.

But let's face it, that's because no one else can sound like Freddie Mercury.

Klingon Penis 2009-01-03 12:45:13 PM
Freddie should be #1, and Steve Perry should be a lot higher.

Occam's Chainsaw [TotalFark] 2009-01-03 12:50:25 PM
Soooo they didn't want to give Freddie both the "Greatest Rock Voice" and "Rock God" awards...?

Your band can rock harder than Queen, and there's even an outside chance that you can sing better than Freddie, but I'm pretty sure doing both at the same time results in brain hemorrhage.

Good point; there's no excuse for Janis Joplin being that low on the list, either.
While we're talking minorities, Corey Glover of Living Colour has pretty astounding range.

Some people judge talent based on the abilities of the performer rather than the color of his skin. You sound like a dirty, dirty racist.

You have no idea how hard I laughed.
I look forward to the day when this is widely recognized. The sheer twattery of the posturing rock archetype could not be hidden forever. It reached its pinnacle in 80s metal, and even the reabsorption of punk into mainstream rock in the 90s could not change the fact that total organ relevance failure was inevitable.
RIP Rock, you always were an asshat*.

So you are telling me that there is not one performer of color who deserves to be on that list?

Where did rock~n~roll music come from?

Who did the original versions of "That's All Right Mama", "Hound Dog", "Good Rockin Tonight", "Mystery Train","Shake Rattle and Roll", "Train in Vain",and lets not to mention Cross Roads"?

You are going to sit there with a straight face and tell me that Robert Plant has a better singing voice than Little Junior Parker? How about we ask Robert what he thinks about that?

Hell Darby Crash was five times the performer than Steve Perry every dreamed of being.

You know originality counts. It takes very little talent to just crap out the same old carbon copy "music"

So it is not about color it is about being an innovator.

How is Joe Cocker #16? I always thought he kinda sounded like he was shiatting broken glass.

And Paul Stanley, while not on the list, is a better singer than at least half of those people.

Little doubt that, compared to many, Billy wasn't much of a singer. There's quite a difference between great singers and those with a great voice. At least to my untrained ear. What catches my interest is how the voice may add to, or even create, a signature sound. A good example might be comparing Christie McVie and Stevie Nicks. Christie has a beautiful voice and probably a better singer, technically. Stevie, however, brought something uniquely different and amazing.

If Top 40 and pop artists can be included, for best voice/singer... people like Karen Carpenter, Gloria Estefan, and yes... even Rick Astley gotta be mentioned.

/loves music - all types; if it's good, it's good
//just don't know it the way musicians/singers do

AntiProEveryThing 2009-01-03 04:20:30 PM
I always thought Robin Zander had the best rock voice. Being able to go from Gonna Raise Hell to Southern Girls was impressive live.

/IMHO

AntiProEveryThing 2009-01-03 04:23:53 PM
And yeah, Patton is the best vocalist in rock. Amazing stuff even when its a miss

Grey Street 2009-01-03 04:24:29 PM
Plant had more sheer power in his voice, but Mercury was a better technical singer, in that he sang more complex songs and controlled the modulation of his voice almost perfectly. I like Zeppelin more than Queen, but Mercury has the slight edge here, I think.

CitizenTed [TotalFark] 2009-01-03 04:27:15 PM
Greg Lake should be on that list - in the Top 10. I'd also add Eddie Vedder. I don't care for his music very much, but he has a very unique approach to timing and cadence that elevates him above the rest of the screamers. (Nick Drake was even better, but I don't think he qualifies as "rock").

thejew 2009-01-03 04:27:49 PM
ok, i'm a jersey boy and (hard to believe) i like bon jovi, but no way should he have been on that list. nothing special, and it sounds like he's either slightly constipated or singing out the side of his mouth half the time.

and put me down with freddie on top with janis.

Why do people think Bon Scott can sing? James Hetfield sucks too. In fact this whole list is bullshiat.

danduran 2009-01-03 04:39:46 PM
Well this list is quite obviously biased towards old-time rock music, so of course all the singers are old-time rockers.

New guys? How about Ryan Adams, Kurt Cobain, James Dean Bradfield, all have voices that would be better than many on that list.

/another vote for Freddie though

mfaby 2009-01-03 04:39:49 PM

Not after their third album then didn't.

Not a hater, either, so stfu.

They were a cross between Yes and Elton John; prog rock with pop
sensibilities.

The man has a distinct voice with impressive range. He can grumble, croon, sing with grit or a controlled wail. Whether or not you like his music or style is another matter. He does have a great rock voice.
