I love it how people dismiss rap/hip-hop as being inconsequential and useless and yet they ignore the fact that it has had the biggest impact on the english language compared to any other genre of music.
When Shakespeare added 10 bazillion words the the English language, the man was hailed as a genius...yet when Jay Z did the same the critics just say that he's money, cash hoes. He's from the hood stupid, what type of facts are those?

Is there some Shakespearian play that involves smackin' hos and bustin' caps that I'm not aware of? Yeah, that's because Shakespear was a POSITIVE influence on the English language and hip-hop/rap is an assault upon it.

Now go back and sulk in your room and stare at the 40+ posters of shirtless black guys you've put up....

Shakespearian plays DID involve gang wars, underage sex, cannibalism, violence and other trashy, unseemly subject matter that where dismissed as being "low culture" by many of the great literary critics of his day.
If someone introduces a new means to communicate an idea (such as inventing a word) no matter how seemingly trivial is that ever a bad thing? Doesn't it say something that the rappers not only invent words, but the words have enough resonance to the culture that they are still being used years after they where invented? How many people are still going to be using "Palinism" years from now, and how many of those same people are still going to be using the words "dope"?

Seriously. I mean if you grew up with holes in your zapitos, one would assume you'd celebrate the minute you was having financial prosperity.

KNW: Is there some Shakespearian play that involves smackin' hos and bustin' caps that I'm not aware of?

Uh... yeah, kinda. There was a distinct lack of caps to be busted back in those day. He'd be smackin' hos and daggern' folks, then gettin' held down by the man when they try to frame you for a crime you didn't commit.

Keep up the good fight! I'm sure some once said, "Shakespeare, this is not a word...lonely, use a word that's already invented. You can't just make up words!"

It's worth mentioning, though, that rap slang has a tradition that completely upends and inverts Shakespeare's purpose for creating language. Billy the Shake was in the business of entertaining the masses, bringing as many as possible into the theatres to be entertained. Rappers, while in the entertainment biz, are instead the heirs to a long tradition of language that entertains but still manages to hide true meanings. Did you ever wonder why rap slang never manages to last for more than a year? Two, tops? ("Def," how we miss thee...) It's because, just like when slaves hid coded messages about escape routes in songs, it's all about being able to yell your message right in front of "The Man" without him figuring out what the hell you're saying. Remember how fun it was the first time you heard your Dad trying to be funky at a wedding and yelling "Skeet skeet skeet?" Rap slang has a built-in expiration date because eventually the people with the power will decipher it.

Oh, and thanks for chiming in KNW. Your insight was quite useful. You seem as well-educated about Shakespeare (who spent quite a lot of time thinking about new ways to talk about cocks and evil Jews) as you do about hip-hop ("Heh. Black people talk funny. I cast magic missile!") Now why don't you go back to playing "Magic: The Strictly White People Gathering" and let some grown folks talk.
