I bet the name is accurate. Education is probably pretty absent there.

Well we certainly dont want to offend anyone, that would be terrible if someone, anyone, anywhere, ever, was offended about anything...

unless they are brown of course.

I don't like to refer to bills mailed to my house as "bills"... so I call them "junk mail" and throw them away.

Also, the instead of refering to something as a "bank foreclosure" I like to call it "Happy Poop Smiley Buttons."

So, what is the negative connotation? I don't get it. If the word "school" has acquired one, maybe they should look into the reason why. Until then, they are just renaming South Central.

FTFAThis is Watercliffe Meadow, a place for learning. One reason was many of the parents of the children here had very negative connotations of school. Instead we want this to a be a place for family learning, where anyone can come.

"We were able to start from scratch and create a new type of learning experience. There are no whistles or bells or locked doors. We wanted to de-institutionalise the place and bring the school closer to real life.
'

First school in UK to have Mandatory Random Stabbing as a class.
Pre-requisite: Nanny State Bedwetting Entitlement class.

Rename them day-care centers, let those who want to learn go to a real school, and then those who might not like the idea of being in "school" can hang out in a state sponsored day-care facility until they are old enough to go get a job. Then those people can do manual labor or make my french fries.

I wonder if they have Dictionaries there?

school - /skul/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [skool]

1. an institution where instruction is given, esp. to persons under college age: The children are at school.

I wonder how they will reconcile their stupidity with their students?

wait....is the word " student " a demeaning term?

Now that I think about it, the word " teacher " has an authoritative and therefore intimidating tone that would very well squash the little ones fragile self esteem.

libbynomore2:

Rote learning carries its flaws like a speedboat and a water skier.

I attended Catholic schools for most of my youth. I had exactly TWO teachers who taught.

One very religious and Catholic.
One very religious and non-Catholic.

Want to know what each one did (without knowing the other did it)?

Walked the class to the library and showed everyone how to RESEARCH topics.

Not memorize. Not submit to the loudest. Not agree to anything.

They showed their students how to QUESTION.

Question who they were.
Question how they got to be where they were.
Question the government.
Question the world.

If there is one lesson I have learned in life, one thing I would pass on to anyone who would listen, it would be this:

Question the ones who only provide answers. Answer the ones who only provide questions.

Only through dialogue can we know ourselves, our families, our culture.

I don't see the problem here - I don't think they have an official policy of denying that their institution is a school when asked, they're just not using the word school as part of the name.

Of course, they seem to have quite an erm... 'progressive' attitude to education in general which some people might disagree with, but if that's the problem then you probably ought to call a spade a spade rather than criticising the name of the place.

Not defending the fools in the article, just pointing out that naming things does play with the psychology at work.

The problem is, as retarded PC and bureaucratically retarded England has become, the US is only a few years behind them. Modern liberal rhetoric doesn't allow homework, or kids to fail projects, or grading in red ink, or scores to be kept in soccer or now people even using the word 'school'.

/Awesome. Our kids are doomed.

I wonder if they'll learn any Shakespeare at this new "school". "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2). And shiat will still smell like shiat.
