I always liked their campaign promise to make a graduated switch to driving on the left side of the road.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I find Canadian politics very fascinating.

I don't particularly care what that says about me.

So much of their platform made so much sense. I mean it was 4 feet high. HOW CAN YOU ARGUE WITH THAT?!

I'm torn between the Sex Party (whose leader actually runs a quite decent sex store in Vancouver) and the Parti Citron (Lemon Party, sfw - it existed before THAT Lemon Party), which does have a very intriguing platform promising to support global warming in order to promote a Canadian citrus-based economy and abolish Toronto.

Then, there's always the BC separatists...

Where can I donate money to to help abolish Toronto!

From the article:

...but I hope Bob Rae is correct when he says that the Liberal party and Canadian politics are going to become boring again. Let's hope then they can all get to work on making the economy boring and helping to spread boredom in Afghanistan.

Having an exciting political life is an overrated experience. We all bemoan public apathy over elections, but that's a sign of health: People don't have to care. The United States recently had the largest election turnout in memory, which was treated as a cause for celebration. Far from it: The voters showed up because of two wars and a collapsing economy. That's the kind of excitement we can all live without.

Damn! Someone give that man an "Oh Snap!" graphic :)

Boring is good.
GOPers should take a lesson in boring politics.

Getting caught getting your ass farked in a public bathroom while being a closet homo GOP senator, while being an overt fascist, U.S. Constitution hating pussy, may make your GOP drama wetdream come true, in the real world it's just bad form.

Heh, very straightforward and well-said.

Phil Moskowitz 2009-01-03 05:34:28 AM
Boring means that they're listening to sociologists and economists who can't communicate with you because you don't have a degree in their discipline. That would be the best politics on the face of the earth. We just rarely see it because you numbskulls need to "get" what the government is doing.

Can somebody please post a link to a Candian saying "boot" and "about" the same way? I have never heard anyone here in Canada pronounce those two words the same. I've gone my whole life curious about wtf Americans think they are hearing.

PirateFreedom 2009-01-03 05:56:52 AM
In times of economic and international uncertainty a political party steals the old "no surprises" campaign from a hotel chain.
At least that's not an egregiously stupid thing to do which is a good start for them.

I think the thing is, some Americans say "about" as "abaaaoooout", so in comparison, Canadians ARE saying the two words very similarly.

Canadians don't. But they do pronounce it "a-boat"

American: a-bout ("ow!")
Canadian: a-boat (to eat some OATs)
American perception of Canadian: a-boot (oooh that's gotta hurt)

Not exactly the same, but a definite tendency. I've always thought it derived from a Scottish influence.

It's not just Americans. canadians don't hear "aboot" the same reason people who are tone deaf don't hear that they are horrible singers. No one thinks that they speak with an accent.

"aboot" tends to be a central canadian thing. "eh" and "how's it goin' tend to be a western thing. No one understands newfies.

Americans say 'aw', we say 'ow'. There is a difference. Think about the way that you hear the word 'house':

Most Canadians say 'h ow se', which rhymes with 'ab ow t'. Many Americans say 'h aw se' which rhymes with 'ab aw t'. It's a subtle difference, but it's there, especially to the ear that isn't familiar with hearing both regularly. To the American ear, 'ab ow t' can sound more like 'aboot'.

So really, the problem is that Americans suck at hearing. The End.

FTFA: Even though the monarchy is patently ludicrous and humiliating to our national pride, we are still attached to it.

Wow. Short and sweet. Any Australian Farkers care to comment on that? I've never understood why the Queen is still the head of state. If you want to be ruled by toothless inbreeders, just move to Alabama.

Also, they should take the Eliz II image off the looney, and replace it with the image of Shatner screaming "Kahn!" That would be so much more Canadian-ly awesome.

But change is scary. canadians want the boring. they may be left of centre politically, but they are very conservative when it comes to their institutions. Even if they're a throwback to colonial times.
