I didn't see mention of the "nuku-lear" VS "new-clear" thing that personally drives me up a wall.

jdamaral 2009-01-02 02:26:15 PM
Does John Kerry's incessant moaning/groaning while saying exactly 12 words per minute count as a 'verbal tic'?

Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude [TotalFark] 2009-01-02 02:27:18 PM
That Obama tic where he constantly said uhhhhh during interviews and speeches was pretty annoying, I have to admit.

Tartha De Tear [TotalFark] 2009-01-02 02:27:52 PM
I'd like to open the floor up to other public figures.

Karl Cassle(sp) has a slush-mouth that makes me want to kick newborn puppies.

Let's be clear.

Firstly repetition is time-honoured part of political oratory

Secondly, stock phrases can help a person get his message across.

McManus_brothers [TotalFark] 2009-01-02 02:31:27 PM
I read a piece back during primary season (IIRC) that said smarter people actually have more verbal tics, like Obama's "uh". It has something to do with the fact that they're trying to work out their thoughts - unlike just randomly blurting out something like, "Hey, bring 'em on."

LittleSmitty 2009-01-02 02:31:56 PM
I find that any politician just opening their mouth pretty much annoys the crap out of me, but then again, that goes for most people I meet as well.

I'd add the G W Bush sudden uncomfortable pause.

Yeah, like the part where Lincoln repeated shiat over and over in the Gettisburg, wait, he didn't?

Bad_Seed: Secondly, stock phrases can help a person get his message across.

Yes. And they do a terrible job of answering the question.

Something that is politically effective doesn't make it "time-honored" or particularly skilled.

See Bush, George W.

As much as I find Obama's "uhhh" and "butbutbutbutbut-thethethethe" annoying, Bush will forever hold the title of worst verbal diarrhea:

"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."

"I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family."

"I hear there's rumors on the Internets that we're going to have a draft."

"I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully."

"You work three jobs? ... Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that." -to a divorced mother of three,

"Too many good docs are getting out of the business. Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country."

"They misunderestimated me."

"Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?"

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

"There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again."

I know that he is not a politician but WMMR in Philadelphia had an interview with Scott Weiland. If ever there was a way to tell kids to stay off of drugs, listen to that interview, it will make you want to burn your eyeballs out with a curling iron. Every other syllable (not word) had an uh or an um. in it. It was terrible.

/Good interview though

Obama: You can listen to his mind working.
Uhhhh = "Processing."
Look, = "Processing Complete."

As in: "The thing about , is that uhhhhhhh. Look, ."

Biden:
Falls back too often on "Ladies and Gentlemen" and uses the word "Literally" like a German would say "Doch."

bartink: Yeah, like the part where Lincoln repeated shiat over and over in the Gettisburg, wait, he didn't?

Let's be clear. What I had in mind was the I Had a Dream speech, but there are plenty of examples from history, dating right back to the classical era, where repetition has been employed to great effect.

Yes. And they do a terrible job of answering the question.

Something that is politically effective doesn't make it "time-honored" or particularly skilled.

See Bush, George W.

Look, we have to distinguish here between two things.

Firstly, we have repetition as a rhetorical device. The art of making a good speech isn't simply saying something meaningful, it's saying it well. You could have the best ideas in the world, but if you cannot communicate them well, nobody will listen to you.

Secondly, there's repetition of the same answer to any given question, whether or not that answer relates to that particular question, which is what I believe you were referring to. Now, this... this is something we have to avoid. But make no mistake, the President-elect commits this particular sin far, far less than his contemporaries in Washington, above all, when compared with the incumbent president.

And thirdly, and most importantly, we must not take tounge-in-cheek Fark comments too seriously, lest we end up looking foolish.

When you have the attention span of a fruit fly it's really hard to parse all the way through a sentence that long.
