The school girl uniforms are not at all what I had hoped for. No chance for a pedo bear/Hansen sighting.

Are things that screwy in big cities that coed schools are being tossed aside?

DslainteC: And now the Bruins are better than the Red Wings.

Being a few points ahead of the Red Wings in the overall league standings while being a part of a weaker conference does not make the Bruins "better". You could say that if the Bruins win the cup, but they haven't done that yet.

As an educator myself I am opposed to same sex schools which are publicly funded. There is indisputable evidence that for some students (a small minority) same sex school are better. But the advantages for same sex school are heavily outweighed by the advantages-- social, behavioral, and intellectual-- of co-ed schools. People forget that there this a huge body of research and literature that demonstrates the advantages of co-ed education. We don't do same-sex education in America for good reason. Most of the world doesn't do same sex education for good reason.

Same sex education is just another fad that allows the adult "do-gooders" to masturbate in public at the expense of the minds of you people. Same as it ever was.

Yeah, because having males and females in the same school is what's wrong with education. Fix that, and everyone's test scores will magically go up and all will be well.

It's so simple. Like every solution.

Yes, let's set gender relations in this country back 70 years through gender segregation, I'm sure students will learn to cooperate and compete effectively with the opposite sex by pure intuition and what they read in magazines. Also, let's have separate schools for each race and sexual orientation because it's more comfortable being around people who are the same as you are. This will work well.

I don't understand why some of you folks are railing against this.
They're talking about two schools, 1 for each gender, in a school system comprised of how many schools?

No one's snowflakes are being forced to attend.

If same sex HS education is beneficial to a very small group of students, why not provide a school to benefit precisely those students?

I wouldn't want my kids going to a same gender school but who am I, or you, to say what's right for every other kid out there.

I went to a public high school, but took summer extra credit classes in a high school program at Barnard, an all-female college.

I loved learning in a single-sex atmosphere. Particuarly when I was 17 or so, it helped me keep my mind on schoolwork while I was in class (and save the boy craziness for after hours). I think generally, it was a healthier environment.

Yeah. If certain people don't feel comfortable around other minorities or whitey, why should they have to go to school with them? Let's bring back separate but equal!!!!

Maybe true. However, beating the Red Wings, as the Bruins have done in 2 out of 3 meetings with the Red Wings, does, in fact, make the Bruins "better".

It really seems like the school is doing a bang-up job educating girls and preparing them for the real world:

"Without this school, my life would be nothing," said Manica, a senior. "All boys do is get you in trouble as far as with babies. . . . All you need is your books. That's what will get you through life."

That's all boys do?
And all you need is your books?

Yep, I see a great future in reality for this bright girl who is in no way lacking common sense.

IMHO, Schools should be sex-segregated at grade 7, and uniforms required until then. I don't care if the kids go to the same physical building even, as long as the classrooms are sexually segregated ... and I mean teachers as well : women teaching girls and men teaching boys. I'd prefer schools that were really really physically separate (like two blocks apart), with coordinating socializing events.

I attended an all-girl public high school and I couldn't agree with you more. Don't get me wrong, my school gave me a great education. I actually chose to go there because it was one of the better schools in my city. I also think some kids do benefit from that kind of environment. In my experience at an all-girl school, however, most fell into two camps:

A) Those like myself who were already studious and ambitious, but maybe a little introverted. We would have done well academically at any good school, but we missed out on most of that social interaction with the opposite sex and entered college not even having had many male friends. I was clueless about dating when I graduated and was rather intimidated by it (though I adapted well once I got started).

Case in point FTFA:
"Without this school, my life would be nothing," said Manica, a senior. "All boys do is get you in trouble as far as with babies. . . . All you need is your books. That's what will get you through life."

I probably sounded a lot like this ten years ago. Honestly parents would you rather your daughter think like this or have a healthy understanding of the need for balance in her personal and professional life? My little brother went to an equally good coed school, graduated near the top of his class and is now at Johns Hopkins but he has a girlfriend (no babies!) and confidence socially that I was still building at his age.

B) The more extroverted or those who knew boys from outside of school had the same problems as girls at any other school. Many seemed, if anything, more eager for male attention because they were isolated from it all day. At my school, guys from other schools around the city would leave early so that they could come down and watch my classmates strut around with their dress-code regulation skirts rolled up and their dress-code regulation blouses buttoned down at 3pm on the dot. I don't know the numbers for sure, but I don't think my high school did much better than any of the others in teen pregnancy.

I think it's fine to have same-sex education as an option for some students, but if/when I have kids I would probably encourage them to go to a normal coed school.

I don't know...I thought my high school uniform was pretty cute. I actually wore it for Halloween a couple years ago and didn't get any complaints.

I went to an all-girls Catholic high school in the suburbs and loved it. That being said, I didn't really socialize with my classmates. I didn't have anything against them, but I had other friends in the city (male & female) that were more my speed.

But during school hours, it was great to not have the distraction of trying to impress the opposite sex and worrying about clothes, etc. For whatever reason, it worked for me.
