I'm not up to date on my newspeak, but the basic rule of thumb is that if a republican uses a term to refer to someone on the left, then that word is automagically rendered 'racist and offensive'. So 'negro' isn't racist. Unless a white republican uses the term, in which case it's now a racial term.

Also, to randomjsa, who apparently did not read the original news article he is referring to: they were using the questionable term in a context of "this is a bad way to think about Obama... it belies racism." The gist was don't fall for the archetype. It was more about the term and its psychology, and did not *call* him as such.
