It sounds like she needs to read more. Those who actually go to the library regularly know where the goods are.

/She sounds fat.

I'm not sure if I've seen that since 9th grade. My high school and college used the Library of Congress system. The Boston Public Library does too.

This sounds like the people who want to go to the Metric system.

If you're too stupid to be able to understand it, you probably aren't smart enough to grasp the replacement system anyway. You should just forget it and go back to asking people if they would like fries with that.

Don't you know the Dewey decimal system?

MrKraclenutz 2009-01-02 09:29:19 AM
Hmm, could there possibly be a connection between being a conservative bible beating gay basher and not being able to understand things on a 9th grade level?

And by the way lady, your name sounds like I should be able to find it in the credits of Big Black Poles and Deep Dark Holes IV.

The "Library of Congress" catalog system? That's even worse.

Ronda Storms, former Hillsborough County commissioner and current state senator (R-Fire and Brimstone) has her eye on your library. Again.

The author of TFA has to be a Farkette.

Now back to the topic:

She thinks that the DDS is too confusing, yet will have no problem with "Gardening how-tos? Yeah... Down there, next to Pshychology. No... the other side".

It's Florida, the library only consists of Little Golden Books, Curious George and the ever popular Where's Waldo. How hard is it to catalogue them?

/Do they still pronounce it "lieberry"

Someone in a thread last month said it best: I'll considering switching to Metric when Europe switches to 120V 60Hz.

The system has never been my problem. I'm thinking that maybe they could work on putting the goddamn books back where they're supposed to be. Oh look, the book isn't checked out, it should be right here, where is it? On the shelf? No farking chance.

We know from history what a book burning looks like. How do you suppose you light a pyre of DVDs?

I know not what a burning pyre of dvd's would look like, but I know who should stand over them and inhale deeply...

Eugh. I hate DDS. Doomed to have 12 digit numbers and subject to not infrequent slash and burns because of how limited and archaic the divisions are.

(1) Libraries have to pay to license the Dewey decimal system
(2) LC is superior to Dewey. Simple proof: In LC, Bible studies are appropriately filed under BS.

And any moment now, some schmuck from Floriduh will propose that categorizing books is, and should be, attributed to an Intelligent Filer.

As a library science grad student, she can piss off.

We use Dewey because it allows an easy system that allows for cut-ins, and gives us an external organization structure for small collections like most public and branch libraries have. As well, Dewey and such systems allow for ordering by subject, which is much easier for researching a topic.

Notice how books in Barnes and Noble get out of order really easily? You might be looking for histories of Europe during WWII (Dewey: 943.086). Well in BN, Histories are all mangled together. War histories next to general histories, next to Asian histories, next to historical fiction. Even if you arrange by Author's last name (what about multiple authors, or corporate bodies, or government publications?), it's inefficient. I can organize numbers much faster then I can alphabetize. For a retail store that might be ok, for a limited budget library that's very bad.

Also, she ever consider that we've kind of developed this system, all our computers are set up for it, and changing it costs money? I'm betting if she's futzing with library cataloging systems, she's the sort that hates taxes too.

Books have already been made obselete by modern technology. I have read books on my computer, and years ago was reading on my Sony Clie PDA (big 'ol iPhone-sized screen).

That said, they will continue to survive for quite a while longer. Nostalgia, ease of use, available library of titles, average level of tech ability of the market... all these practical issues will contribute to make books continue to sell for years to come even though technology has come up with viable (and I would argue superior) alternatives to printed paper.

As far as DDC vs. LOC's system goes... I'm not sure I've got a horse in the race, but if the LOC uses a different system I'm inclined to favor that one. Those guys kinda know what they are doing...

I took a VIP tour of the LOC last year. Cool stuff! Got to see the book stacks in the basement, the old card catalog and even the "secret door" that exits from the librarians' desk in the main reading room. The main building is also the prettiest building I've been inside of in DC.

I'm going to go ahead and say that books will never become obsolete. While technology that allows you to carry numerous books in a smallish device is pretty cool, it will never replace actual ink on paper. There's just something about actually holding and reading a book that electronics simply can't replicate.
