More power to them. Saw AIC twice the past couple years. I always liked Jerry's playing, very straight forward 70's heavy.

It is. There's a few shots of them in hairband mode, even the earliest AIC promo shots still had a vaguely hairband look to them. And then there are the shots of Layne from when he was with his previous band.

Thank god they realized how dumb that looked.

And personally, I like DuVall.

The fact that Nick Raskulinecz is producing the new album doesn't hurt either. He did wonders with both Rush and Shadows Fall.

Layne Staley was the worst rock n roll death of the 90's in my opinion. Really loved those guy's sound.

I still don't get why people still cared that DuVall took over.
He's been with them for years now.
And I honestly think they still sound great.
I saw them live in 2007 and they were great. DuVall did a great job at keeping up the energy and he didn't try to change the style of their old songs at all. He stayed true to Staley's style and he seemed to hit it just as well as anyone could hope.

And that is why I always google something to be sure of it, even if I'm sure of it, before I post it on Fark.

Because someone is going to call you out on it.

It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

AIC had a few good songs. Man in a Box, Down in a Hole, Rooster, When I die, and that's about it.

Layne had a nice voice, but that band is about as meh as it gets. I never understood their appeal.

In my opinion Layne Staley had one of the most unique voices ever, but the only way to make the statement "we are not trying to replace Layne Staley" true is to change the name of the band.

Someone please send a memo to all radio programmers that we want to hear other songs besides Rooster. Alice In Chains has about two dozens songs that are as good or better.

While there are some bands that can replace important members, even their singer, and get away with it, Alice in Chains is one band that should not.

Having a decaying corpse singing about his real-life horrors was the whole point of the band.

Maybe. If you've heard Cantrell's solo efforts, you'd understand what Staley brought to the table.

I respect the guy. He spent his last years inside a mansion getting high and playing video games. There are worse ways to go.

I shudder to think what lame ass band thatfavorite one is. Probably something really meh like Coldplay.

AIC has a ton of great songs. Go back and listen to a few and get educated. Grind, Angry Chair, Dirt, and Nutshell are all farking awesome.

No one will ever replace Layne but Duvall is pretty good. Saw AIC twice in 07 back in Texas and both those shoes rocked.

I rarely ever hear that one now. It's largely Man in the Box, which is one of the few good tracks from Facelift.

I really only hear those two, which is a shame. AIC had much more depth than that. The whole first half of Facelift is good, btw. I like Bleed the Freak and Love, Hate, Love the best.

Cash grab from Jerry Cantrell... blah. Layne's voice was irreplaceable. A couple of low-selling solo albums later, this is what we get. Nothing against Duvall, when opportunity knocks blah blah...

As for airplay, recently I've been hearing Heaven Beside You and Down in a Hole a lot. Also Again.

If you look at the singles alone - Man in a Box, Them Bones, Would?, Rooster, Down in a Hole, I Stay Away, No Excuses, Heaven Beside You, and hmmm.. Grind I think was the first single off the last studio record. Plus some awesome tracks that were never released as singles.

If you question Staley's vocal talent, listen to "River of Deceit" from the side project Mad Season.

I think Bradley would be the worst, followed by Shannon Hoon. Had Sublime and Blind Melon been around in the 2000's, a lot of the crap I've had to listen to this past decade would have been ameliorated. A lot of the other guys you mentioned (like Kurt) died at appropriate times imo, it kind of made them martyrs. But Bradley and Shannon had so much potential that we never got to hear.

But on topic, Layne was right up there with Cornell, Vedder, and Cobain as far as 90s voices went. Not so sure that he topped everyone else b/c so much of AIC depended on him harmonizing with Jerry. But I do think AIC was the best band out of all of em.

I wish surviving band members could see the douche-i-ness of insisting on keeping a band name after an important member/lead singer dies....just for name recognitions sake.

If you're good, people who loved you before will try to figure out what you're up to now.

Nirvana = Foofighters now eh? That is class.

This is pretty much right, but there's exceptions. Nirvana -> Foofighters is an excellent example of this kind of thing handled well. AC/DC's transition from Scott to Johnson worked very nicely without such a change though, probably much because the real core of that band was in the Young brothers anyway. Finding someone who fit those shoes so nicely helped too.

An example of this done wrong, IMO, is Guns N' Roses. I'm not bashing Axl or anything, but it's just too different without Slash and Duff. He should have called his new act something else.

Still missing Staley, myself.
