I submitted this with a better headline. And I actually met the guy, and his wife. So phoo.

He hated that they named a bridge after him while he was still alive. On locally made maps, it was labelled "Newport Bridge" with "Claiborne Pell Bridge" in smaller print underneath in parentheses. Everyone here has respected his wishes and always called it the Newport Bridge. Now that he's dead, we're free to start calling it the Pell Bridge. But there's also a Rhode Island custom of calling things by what they used to be called; it's a way of showing that you're a seasoned local and know the history, not some recent transplant. Meaning that we'll continue to call it the Newport Bridge because, you know, that's what it used to be called.

Israelis? They get a lot of pity/charity, but that can't be right because they also hoard the monies.

Of course, $4200 a year (and most recipients don't get that) doesn't go far anymore, even at a second-tier state college in South Dakota. It boggles the mind to think that poor students were getting Pell grants... not loans... *grants* for 70% or more of their expenses not too long ago.

Pell's attitude towards distribution of wealth was very progressive. He was independently wealthy, but lived modestly (at least by lower Newport standards). He drove a rusty old compact (a Chevy, I think), wore rumpled old clothes, rode public transit, and used his senior discount even while still serving in the U.S. Senate. He contributed heavily to charity and worked tirelessly for the public welfare, and felt that anyone with more than they need should do the same. He was born into wealth and felt it his duty to help others who came up in less fortunate circumstances.

That's Wikipedia's formal style for lists of deaths, explained at the top of the page.

The bridge goes to Newport so I call it the Newport Bridge. I remember seeing Pell Bridge on a sign (where that new mini mall is across from the Tower in SK. Where that bar Champions used to be, you know the one that burned down) and being completely confused.

From one RIer to another, RIP sir.

There's a newer meme where you pretend to not get the snark. And then there's an even newer one where you pretend that you think somebody else isn't getting it even though they are just cleverly playing along. But I don't fall into that category.

Yeah, it was never formally stated, but I think he said that he didn't want to have to see his name on a bridge he drove over himself. I wonder if they'll change any of those now. I don't take the bridge myself, so I don't think I'll notice. Damn, I'm really going to miss the ferry.

I have never taken a ferry over. I didnt even know there still was one. I though the East Ferry service went out once the bridge was put up. I live close enough to the bridge that I take it whenever I have to go to Newport. Not that I go there very often.

And for his trouble, the Repugnicans derisively called him "Senator Well-born."

I once told some rich kid in my frat that I was there on Pell grants in addition to my scholaships. He gave me some BS about how the government shouldn't give money for college to poor people.

Last I heard (5 years ago) he was still living with his parents. I hope he falls down some stairs.

Funding was cut quiet a bit in 2006. And that person was letting their hatred for one person get in the way of celebrating the life of another. Kinda like those people who go to sporting events and root against the other team, instead of rooting for their team.
