If a punk rock band is a threat to the fabric of society, the fabric of society is already unraveling on its own.

I knew a guy who got arrested at a Clash concert about 1980. But he was a lawyer, so he was probably asking for it.

/Pretty sure he was, in fact.

Another thing the Pistols were great at: generating free publicity.

What propelled them to stardom above all else, was that cursing Bill Grundy TV interview and that boat show they did during the Queen's jubilee. They were household name after these incidents. Having "Bollocks" in their album title was just icing on the cake

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2009-01-01 07:54:55 PM
And what's funny, is there are still people who don't know/believe it was all an act. Which is in itself an extremely punk thing.

True... Malcom McLaren made Johnny hide his Mel Torme collection in a storage unit in Sussex for 20 years.

Big deal. In the US, I can think of a whole BIG bunch of entertainers that have been under intensive investigation, just off the top of my head.

John Lennon
Bob Dylan
The Kingsmen (an intensive FBI investigation of Louie Louie)
Janis Ian (for "Society's Child", which "promoted interracial sex"
Frank Zappa (for calling them on their bullshiat numerous times)
The Greatful Dead
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young
The Jefferson Airplane
Arlo Guthrie
Woody Guthrie
Pete Seeger
Country Joe Macdonald
Etc.

But most of these people were targeted back when people actually put up a fuss when they didn't like something.

Did they actually do anything with those investigations? I hope with all of that money being sunk into investigating harmless pop culture icons, they would at least have the decency to assassinate some of them to get their money's worth.

Nope. But MILLIONS were pissed away on them.
They tried to kick Lennon out of the US for being anti-war, but it didn't work.

The FBI investigated the lyrics to Louie Louie for 30 MONTHS! I wonder how much that cost?

Here's a Snopes article about it (bottom of the page) (new window)

How the fark did we win the Cold War?

Mugato [TotalFark] 2009-01-01 10:07:34 PM
That's just another way we know the music industry is doing it wrong. I can't remember the last court case, mass parental outrage or even major arrest related to a band.

Not surprised. I heard that some stations refused to play Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on air because it had the word "ass."

The seventies have had their radicals who think that pop culture harms people, just like we do today.

At this very moment, there are legions of agents in field offices, safe houses, and deep undercover, trying to determine if in fact, "Hannah Montana" might be an assumed identity.

Hell, they're still trying to prove that "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight", is actually a coded message to terrorist cells, telling them to commence the attacks.

COINTELPRO was so busy chasing people who might be subversive like musicians during the Sixties and Seventies, they managed to miss everyone who was actually subversive. The idea that somehow music was being used to send covert messages to millions of Red cells across the nation would be laughable, except now DHS thinks the same thing is being done via MySpace and video games.

Thinking about it, wonder how "Society's Child" (Janis Ian) would go over today.

I do know that back in 1967, many people were really up in arms about it, and it was yanked from release twice, which only made it more of a "must have" cult item.

Society's Child

Come to my door, baby,
Face is clean and shining black as night.
My mother went to answer you know
That you looked so fine.

Now I could understand your tears and your shame,
She called you "boy" instead of your name.
When she wouldn't let you inside,
When she turned and said
"But honey, he's not our kind."

She says
I can't see you any more, baby,
Can't see you anymore.

Walk me down to school, baby,
Everybody's acting deaf and dumb.
Until they turn and say, "Why don't you stick to your own kind."
My teachers all laugh, the smirking stares,
Cutting deep down in our affairs.
Preachers of equality,
Think they believe it, then why won't they just let us be?

They say I can't see you anymore baby,
Can't see you anymore.

One of these days I'm gonna stop my listening
Gonna raise my head up high.
One of these days I'm gonna raise up my glistening wings and fly.

But that day will have to wait for a while.
Baby I'm only society's child.
When we're older things may change,
But for now this is the way, they must remain.

I say I can't see you anymore baby,
Can't see you anymore.
No, I don't want to see you anymore, baby.

Yeah, man, I remember WLS back in the day! I used to love Larry Lujack, and the "Clunk Letter of the Day!" Also listened to WCFL, too. Wasn't John Landecker on WCFL? And, am not from Chicago nor any of the surrounding states.

I like to add "the" to bands that don't have "the" in it just to get reactions out of people.
The other day I had a heated, way-to-long argument with some highschool kid about how the band is called "The Radioheads" and not just "Radiohead."

It was the highlight of the week, during a week with many highlights.

As if everyone who reads Fark is supposed to know minor details about some band that went down in flames 40 years ago.

Hey! GreatBoogerSleeves!

Grace Slick is an untalented drunken whore, and the rest of the band SLAMS my eyelids shut!
