Yea, why can't they just be propaganda devices like he wants them to be?

DeathByGeekSquad 2008-12-31 11:55:43 AM
Why can't they just report facts like the used to?

Why can't they just create an entirely different media outlet for opinions instead of blending them with factual information?

Why can't they provide the whole story instead of handpicked quotes that support their personal slant?

Why can't these people actually find information without ambushing people anymore?

Ah, the media, it's glory days are long over. It should be taken out in a field, shot, and turned into glue.

Kim Jong Il Shot several holes-in-one on his first round of golf -- ever.

I know this because the state media would never lie about Dear Leader.

You know, you could just threaten the editorial board. That seems to work wonders in other states.

Darconix: If they're not doing their jobs, libs, they deserve to be criticized for it. Hard work is obviously something you folks don't understand.

How is not lying about the governor not doing their job?

Explain

Because we were weened off Konkite, Morrow, and others who made it a point to compete over integrity.

It was an aberration -- it will not return. Too many outlets -- too much competition.

Besides, people need to think Objectively, which is much harder than being spoon fed Objectivity.

Ask not what media can do for you, ask what you can do for the media -- which in no small part is what places like Fark are about.

The best posters make convincing arguments with sound logic and good citations. It's more work.

But I think the electorate is more informed that it ever has been in the past because of it.

"If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations, then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media."

-Sarah Palin 10/31/08

What's up with these dipshiate governors and their ignorance of the "Free Press" part of the first amendment? At least the ignorance runs on both sides of the aisle.

"Conservatives" believe that the purpose of the media is to repeat whatever government officials say and nothing else. Otherwise, it's a "filter" and that's bad. Or something like that.

But that contradicts what you just said.

Crude: I understand his confusion, after all, he's a Democrat.

Especially given the history of the N&O as a mouthpiece for the NC Democratic Party in general and the Raleigh power structure in particular as long as the Daniels family owned it.

In this instance, the buyout worked. McClachy got rid of the awful Melanie Sill (who couldn't bend over fast enough for the Edenton Street crowd) and replaced her with John Dresher, who's actually pursuing things like corruption and cronyism. I hate to admit it, but the paper is actually better than it was a year ago.

Speaking as a Raleigh-ite, I've been impressed with the N&O this year. I really don't like the corruption and seeming incompetence of the Democratic political machine that governs North Carolina, but when the only alternative is the same Republican party that gave us Jesse Helms and Elizabeth Dole... gack. Maybe bad press coverage will force the Democrats to improve their handling of state affairs so I don't have to start voting Republican.

I'm opposed to the fairness doctrine because I don't think it would be effective, and I don't have a problem with right wing asshats preaching to themselves.

But if I had a choice between the fairness doctrine and what the bush administration has done to the country, I'd pick the fairness doctrine any time.

I'm pretty sure state executives have more responsibilities than that.

Mike Easley can and should eat a bag of dicks. Either that or resign and let his Lt. Gov. take over a few weeks early. He's proven himself incompetent, particularly during his second term, and his endorsement of that coont Hillary Clinton merely reinforced his douchebaggery.

/NC resident
//voted for him first time around

^ Agreed with Mac.

What's interesting is that this is a solidly Democratic newspaper, one that Republicans in this state hate, and they have the audacity to criticize a Democratic governor!

It wouldn't have a thing to do with rampant corruption, massive waste and constant lying by his administration. No sir, nothing to see there, move along.

If the N&O really wanted to gut Sleasley, they should take a look at his use of the helicopter for getting him to the beach every Thursday afternoon and back to Raleigh every Tuesday morning.

Or they could find out why UNC is so hot to build a new airport west of town: it's not for the AHEC medical program, it's so the fat cat alums can take their private planes and choppers to Tarheel games.

The Chapel Hill paper did this in the late 70s by having a reporter sit at the end of the current airport and count the private planes arriving and leaving an hour before and after the game.

CellarDweller 2008-12-31 02:25:38 PM
Mike Sleasley is just one of the many "Southern Democrats" to come to power in NC. He's just conservative enough for the Fascists of the state without going off the rails like the actual Fascist party candidates have had a tendency to do in NC.

He's terribly corrupt, and it'll be a relief to get Bev Perdue replacing him in office soon. Hell, she could be half as corrupt as him and it would still be a relief.

You're aware that even if the Fairness Doctrine were revived (highly unlikely) it is constitutionally limited to over-the-air broadcast media - right?

You're not thinking big picture. It will start with radio, then declare anti-green as hate speech and before long everything will be regulated.

Actually, let's just make this simple. Your ignorance in general is breathtaking.

As a current Chapel Hill resident, there's a pretty big groundswell against that new airport. Makes you wonder whats wrong with the current airport.

Anyway, I have to say I am greatly impressed with the N&O this year. There is very little fluff. I recently moved back home here and was lamenting the loss of the NYTimes a bit, but the paper has done the trick. I hope they keep up the good work and nail Easley to the wall on his education policies as well. NC schools have improved drastically over the past decade, but talking to teachers it seems to be in spite of Easley's slash and burn policies.

Fark Me To Tears [TotalFark] 2008-12-31 06:38:59 PM
FTFA: "My job is to be nice to other people, and their job is to be nice to me. Just because they're not doing theirs doesn't mean I shouldn't do mine," Easley said in audio of the interview posted on The News & Record's Web site on Christmas Day.

WTF?

Governor Easley, are you really that naive? As a resident of your state and as one of your constituents, I'm embarrassed for you if you were serious when you made that statement.

Perhaps you need to go back and re-read your history books and study up on the actual role of the free press in this country.

If you don't want the press to say bad things about you:

1) stop doing the things that make them complain about you
2) get out of politics, because no one can ever accomplish number (1)

For some background, the paper just finished running a twelve-part expose' of the state's practically non-existent parole/probation program. Apparently, several hundred people in NC have been murdered by criminals out on probation in the last few years, and their probation officers seem to have never bothered to keep in touch.

uncdwm 2008-12-31 08:12:13 PM
kbarham: He's saying the N&O isn't favoring him? Wow. Anyone who knows the history of the paper and the party has to laugh at that regardless of affiliation.

THIS. I don't think anyone has disputed the fact that the McClatchey papers in Raleigh and Charlotte are far left liberal. They have been pretty nice to Easley - he has been horrible. If they had done their job, Pat McCrory probably would have been elected Governor. He couldn't even take his own town (Charlotte).

This quote from Easley shows just how badly the media has failed in reporting impartially and how the voting public has failed in holding their elected gov reps accountable for their action (or inaction)

/i think it's funny that people think a dem OR a repub can be ineffective. how about BOTH?
/The papers also remained hush and gave Edwards a break for a long time.
