Oprah doesn't really do anything. Her power is derived from her ability to influence people, not from any active power she has. If influence were the standard, I'd argue that Barbara Bush is the most powerful woman of the turn of the century.

Power comes in many forms. Clinton is about to become Secretary of State. Subby has achieved the hero worship of some male FARKers for lets say: two hours?

Who is more powerful?

Oh on a different topic, has anyone noticed that with the Clinton and Kennedy legacy politics, America has descended to another plateau in our fall to third world status? That is the process whereby only certain families can achieve in politics, which is kind of like India's caste system and Korea's nepotism (north and south).

Next our leaders will start wearing funny hats and holding military ranks while in civilian office. Just wait. It's coming.

Other than the SoS, they all won Democratic elections (don't forget about the Bushes) so how are elections similar to your examples?

Kind of like taking the highest military intelligence officer and placing him in charge of civilian intelligence... can't stand that move.

But America has had several political families starting I guess with John Adams/John Quincy Adams. The real problem is the amount of wealth to campaign either demands that you come from a prominent family, be corrupt as hell, or the new trend of celebrity politics-- I see Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, and others just waiting to jump into politics...

Ummm, the ability to influence others is one of the strongest forms of power there is. If I say "Do this" and fifty people instantly jump up to fulfill my bidding, I am literally a man with the strength of fifty. If fifty thousand people jump up, I am someone who could change the course of nations. That's nothing to sneeze at.

What sort of power did you think she should have? A nuclear stockpile? Laser-firing eyes? The ability to eat cheesecake without increasing in mass? Sure, she's not a world leader or a mighty comic book character, but if you view her with any form of objectivity, you've got to admit she's quite powerful. Ed Wuncler III and Gin Rummy wouldn't just try kidnapping any old chump.

But Oprah's powered waned when she endorsed Obama over Clinton. A weakness was exposed that Hillary can exploit down the road, need be.

Which weakness is that, exactly? Her ability to side with a winner instead of a loser? Somehow I don't think that will prove to be the magical anti-Oprah kryptonite.

Influence is not derived from any "ability". It speaks more to peoples' gullibility than a person's power. If Oprah says "read this book", no one really has to. People do for their own personal reasons, but not because of some innate or developed ability that she posses.

There are plenty of corpses who have a ton of influence in the world today, and death is the most powerless state that exists.

EdgeRunner 2008-12-31 06:41:57 PM

So charisma, charm and persuasiveness aren't abilities? Really now?

She pissed off a large faction of her base and suffered for in in PR, ratings and advertising revenue. She has probably mended most if not all of those bridges, but Oprah is a cult as well. Not everyone who watches is a member, but a lot of them are.
