Now a state bailout?

Too bad the Federal government doesn't work that way.

I imagine once this starts to hit the legislature in the wallet they will learn how to compromise in a hurry.

If only CA had dozens of useless state funded programs they could cut in order to save money.

frizzle65: Now that's Brilliant!!

Actually, no. BAD idea.

Politicians wealthy enough to not need the salary won't care much either way. Politicians who DO need the salary are suddenly going to be under massive temptation to start taking bribes.

I really don't want elected reps having to choose between voting against some needed workplace safety regulation vs. having a place for his family to live.

California isn't 'broke'. It actuallly has a substantial income. CA is in a fix because it went on a spending spree and now it can't pay for all that it's promised. Yet, it still pays "prevailing wage" for work when it isn't obligated to. It still pays for welfare recipients who stay on the rolls beyond the 5 years mandated under federal law. The budget is rife with unnecessary spending like this, not to mention public employees who get much better pay and benefits than private. But each pot of gold has a vocal constituency attached to it, so it'll not get cut. The only way out for this state is the equivalent of restructuring under abankruptcy judge. The sooner the better.

everyone just calm down. the most important state in the union - if not the world - will not go broke. i have been told many times here on fark that cali contributes over 110% of the world's food and other consumables. according to many farkers, cali is also the most important cultural area in the world - there is no way that it will fall.

So it isn't broke, it's in a fix. And that is because it still earns a lot of money.....

Going broke is easy, all you have to do is owe more than you can pay back.

Welfare stops at 6 months in nearly EVERY state.

Arnold wants to gut the budget and the politicians want to raise taxes. So let's gut the budget and raise taxes and get it over with, for god sakes.

Sadly, that's about right. we have been using the initiative process to vote ourselves all sorts of wonderful things, and pay for them with bonds, for three decades. Now, are formerly high-rated bonds are toilet paper, and nobody wants the. our credit card has been cut off, we have a huge bill to pay, and it looks like both tax increases and severe spending cuts are inevitable. We need a shakeout here, and the Federal government won't help anything if it comes in here with bailout money.

Maybe they can appeal to public assistance from New York....

I would think use fees would be far preferable to any form of income tax. But who am I kidding; you'd rather stick it to the other side.

I'm guessing your source is talking $$$ value in terms of food production.

Cali produces a lot of high $ value food, but I wouldn't say that Cali produces 110% of the world's actual food.

It makes no sense to grow wheat, corn, and stuff you can grow in the flyover states here in Cali when you can grow avocados, wine grapes, lettuce, etc.

listen...California is sick of carrying the other 49 states on it's back. we can't do it forever. just give us your great lake fresh water and we'll continue to save America one avocado at a time. all you selfish bastards don't understand how important we are, and it's time you took notice

The state treasurer is now threatening to issue IOU's on tax refunds. What a bunch of bullshiat. People who overpay on their taxes should be the first to receive a paycheck from the state. I'm due about $500 back from the state this year and I'm going to be farking pissed if I receive an IOU in the mail.

It's one thing to screw over state employees, vendors, and welfare recipients, but honest taxpayers who fund the endless BS programs in this state should be the last people getting the shaft. The solution to this problem is to not raise income tax, gasoline tax, bridge tolls, property taxes, etc. The solution is to start slashing the programs that fund the millions of illegal non-taxpaying dregs on society that plague this state.

Good or bad, it's a PR gem.

And it's a hell of a reason for those very legislators and their collective staff to figure out their quandaries of fiscal solvency and do it very very quickly.

California has plenty of water for crops, its the farking desert drain called SoCal that is causes the state trouble. Divide that farker in half already.

Republican governor maybe?

In all seriousness, California's problems stem from unfunded federal mandates and the fact that it sees only the tiniest portion of it's federal tax dollars back, while the rest is shipped off to farkholes like Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky.

It's been the piggy bank for pork barrel projects for poor southern states for farking years and the bank is running dry. Big farking surprise.

Either of you assholes live in California? No? then STFU.

If you do, they you can pay My taxes, OK Francis?

Just paid $170 protection (er... license fee) on a farking 12 year old truck to the Sacramento Mafia. This on top of another 50 bucks for a smog "test" (ha ha). And if two loudmouthed LA talk show jocks hadn't roiled the mob into sending many many death threats to Sacramento, those assholes would have TRIPLED the annual license fee. 90% of these assholes in Sacramento (and that includes the republitards and well as those socialist farkhead cumlicker rim-nibblers) belong in PMITA prison where they can suck the cocks of their buddies in the prison guards union who bought and paid for it years ago.

Iraq? Hell, I'd gladly pay a reward to Al Queda if they blew up the farking Sacramento capital bldg (but only if occupied). Where the hell are terrorists when you need them? Sitting on their skinny asses in a cave somewhere, that's where.

So, why don't you ask me how I REALLY feel?
