Until this moment, I had blissfully forgotten the existence of Winger.

I saw Winger open up for somebody in the 80s (obviously). Either I can't remember who it was, or I just don't want to admit it.

That said, I was not impressed by Mr. Winger's bass playing skills, at least in a live sense. He would pluck an open E every once in a while and just seemed to focus on singing and looking all pretty.
My guess is that someone backstage was actually doing the playing and he wasn't even plugged in.

There's no case there subby. Lars' lawyers are probably good enough to notice that.

in an article about Winger, you're going to slam Lars? Say what you will about Metallica, but I think we'd all prefer them over Winger.

MaxxLarge [TotalFark] 2008-12-30 11:06:14 AM
Well, the source of the statement notwithstanding, he's kinda right. Most drummers slobber over Lars for the first year or two, but most of us eventually get to a stage in our development where we inevitably realize his skill set is adequate at best, and was never really anything to write home about.

He's always been sufficient, but that's about it.

Lets see how many Metallitards show up to defend Lars because Kip Winger of all people slammed his talent, completely forgetting that in the Playboy interview a few years ago James Hetfield himself slammed Lars' talent.

I also had the cassette of that Nelson band.

As a drummer, I wholeheartedly endorse this statement. Lars was the reason I got into drumming, mostly because his beats were real easy to pick up when you're learning. Now that I've been playing about 5 or 6 years, and have seen quite a few other drummers, I can say for a fact that he ain't all that. I'm still indebted to their first 4 albums for leading me down the path to drums, but that's about all I owe to Lars.

I've never heard someone say Lars is great behind the drums, but he's great behind the desk. He built a brand name to follow excellent music, that is why he managed to stick around for as long as he has. At this point, there is no point in replacing him.

He's adequate at best. He isn't qualified to hold the cymbals of a Mike Portnoy or Neal Peart.

But as someone said earlier, Winger did have a bassist playing backstage.

He isn't talented enough to sing AND play at the same time.

Honestly after seeing Some Kind of Monster I'd much rather kick James in the ass. Having a sandy vagina of the magnitude of Hetfield in the band, it is almost a necessity for someone to be the douche. Lars just got stuck with the job of being the douche.

I actually respect Lars a bit more after seeing Some Kind of Monster. Sure, we should all kick him in the balls for cutting his hair short, and dying it blonde, but after the movie, interviews, and comments from Ross Halfin, he sounds like a progressive sort of dude looking to try something new and different. Ultimately, it sounds he runs in to roadblocks thrown up by Hetfield because he can't take criticism, and won't let guys work on music when Hetfield isn't around.

It seems obvious to me, if he isn't He has always had the ability to try whatever he wanted, because his parents always had money to give it a shot. I think he traveled to a tonne of Oasis shows back in the 90s because he 'dug' their sound. I've heard he did something similar back in the early 80s during the NWBHM.

Great drummer? No. Seems like an interesting guy to me though.

That's quite an ignorant statement. Lars runs the business end of Metallica, or did during those years. Given what you know after all of the biographies, the movie, etc, would you really trust the band in anyone else's hands?

It's his stubborn asshole/douchebag approach that pushed excellent music everywhere in the early years. I'd rather have Metallica with Lars than no Metallica at all.

I liked S&M. I thought they added a nice new 'feature' to the songs I had loved all those years. I still have it on my Zune and find myself listening to Battery with the orchestra background and banging my head just the same.

I went to see Kip Winger.
He said, "In my day we knew how to party.
Bands today? Come on, not hardly."
He had a backup singer (doo dee doo doo).
He said, "The metal scene is a disgrace.
But I ain't got no dog in that race."

Madbassist1 [TotalFark] 2008-12-30 03:10:20 PM
God, I HATE to be the one to say this...I mean REALLY HATE IT.

Winger, while being bland in the song dept. are ALL (including Kip) supremely accomplished musicians who could probably play any Metallica song standing on their heads.

I do not believe Kip Winger (who has been a studio and side bassist for years before forming Winger) would use a backup live. Citation needed.

I was gonna say pretty much the same thing. When you spend 20+ years playing with a drummer who's also in the Dixie Dregs, it does at least give you a position from which to judge drummers. Hell, Winger itself was basically a studio musician super group cashing in on a fad. Toto a decade later if you will.

/Still likes Pull, Winger's third album.

Whatthefark 2008-12-30 03:22:44 PM
Lars peaked on Justice. Since then he's gotten lazy and unimaginative.
He's been playing for decades, he should be able to do some gnarly stuff, but he doesn't.
He's up there with Alex Van Halen if you ask me.

There are thousands of drool-inducing musicians out there that merely lack the songwriting, personality, drive, interest, or just luck to "make it." I had a drummer in my band that could put most anyone that has raised a stick to shame. Will you ever hear of him? Maybe if you happen to read the entire cast of a symphony orchestra show's playbill sometime.

So it really isn't surprising that Rod Morgenstein is better than many other drummers out there... considering that he is a known drummer from more than one famous band.

If nothing else, XM's all-Metallica channel really opened my ears finally to Lars' lack of greatness. He does double-bass and percussive strikes (kick-snare-cymbal grab) really really well and perfectly matched to James' rhythms... beyond that he's mean to ears and that's about it.

I felt bad to find out that was the drummer from Slipknot... since I've disparaged that band before. He was just a little good.

"A little" is used in the sense that "a little bit of trouble" = "damn near killed us"

EveryoneGetsLaid 2008-12-30 04:35:26 PM
Yeah, while slipknot may not be all that good... Joey Jordison is one hell of a drummer. Apparently for the Metallica show from the video , Lars was hospitalized and they had Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo (Slayer) sit in....
