Hub-Tones and a stiff bourbon.

Godspeed, great one.

Stockton and Malone are the only Jazz greats left.

Boozer sucks because he's a dookie. Mark Eaton was/is a pointless tool who was relegated to stand four feet behind the three-point line while the rest of the team ran the offense.

freddie hubbard fun fact:

Freddie performed on the first album ever released on CD, Billy Joel's 52nd Street. Freddie is the soloist on "Zanzibar."

I was just trying to participate in the Jazz thread; I'll try to do better.

Hey, Sloan's a great coach, right?

Hey, Pharoah Sanders, Anthony Braxton and Ornette Coleman are still alive and kickin.

"(John) Stockton and (Karl) Malone are the only Jazz greats left."

Of the Utah variety, eh?

Getting back to jazz music, though... In addition to lerxst2112's list of Pharoah Sanders, Anthony Braxton and Ornette Coleman, I would add:

Phil Woods
Lou Donaldson
Kenny Burrell
Lee Konitz
Dave Brubeck

All still around, but some getting long in the tooth.

But yeah, Hubbard was certainly in the pantheon of true greats. I was just spinning his "Hub-Tones" and "Born To Be Blue" albums the other day. Sad news indeed.

The good news is that jazz is doing pretty well, thanks to a crop of younger talent keeping it alive. People like Geri Allen, Mulgrew Miller, Charlie Hunter, Wynton Marsalis, Brad Mehldau, Jacky Terrason, Joshua Redman, Joey DeFrancesco, Ravi Coltrane, John Scofield, Pat Metheny... Some aren't really "young" per se, but they probably won't be going anywhere for a good long time.

So at least we jazz lovers have that going for us.

Got a few of his discs;

Pick up his 'The Rites of Spring'

RIP and my condolences to his family.

GibbyTheMole, didn't you hear what John Buck said? Jazz is a series of unconnected notes by talentless musicians that people think it's cool to listen to!

Growing up. I played trumpet in the school band, and Freddie Hubbard was the guy I always tried to emulate, and of course never came close to successfully doing so.

I wish him well on his journey up to the Great Harmon Mute in the Sky. Good night, trumpet man. You will be missed.

My grandson got to meet him this summer at Jazz Fest in Indy. Great man. RIP.

I dunno, Joey D may not be long in the tooth, but his heart probably is.

/loves his music
//seeing his trio in less than 3 weeks

Charlie Freak:

What're you saying? Joey's got major heart issues or something? Say it ain't so!

I've seen Joey's trio in person. If it's anything like the show I saw, you're in for a helluva great performance.

If only all of us were as enlightened as John Buck. A god among men if ever there was.

It's nice to be remembered. See, I wasn't even gonna say anything after that pissing match from a couple weeks ago. Still won't.

Enjoy your music.

No, he doesn't that I know of, but at 37 he's gotta weigh as much as a Hammond organ. I doubt he'll last very long at that. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

Charlie Freak [TotalFark] 2008-12-31 07:14:37 PM
And I've seen him twice - at the same place both times. Last year he was playing with Pat Bianchi and George Benson showed up and sat in. What a farking brilliant show.

Maybe if you quit showing up on jazz threads you wouldn't get your ignorant ass stomped.

He's only 37? I thought he was at least in his late 40's. Maybe being fat makes you look older. Oh well, he still rocks, even though he's talentless and creates music with no connection :(

Charlie Freak [TotalFark] 2008-12-31 09:58:38 PM
Yeah, my jaw just about hit the floor when I found out he's only 7 years my senior. You're right, he could easily pass for late 40's. Last year he was scooting around the NAMM show floor on a Lark, or whatever they're called these days. I guess its no big deal - live and let live and all that, but heart disease runs in my family so I'm ultra-conscious of it. I'd hate to see such a talented dude leave so early.

WTF is your problem? I didn't hack on your precious jazz this time.

Slamguy 2008-12-31 10:17:21 PM
Yeah, it's depressing to see your favorite musicians die. I was listening to some deFrancesco with John McLauglin and Elvin Jones, who passed away a few years ago. Oh well, there are always new, young players emerging to keep the jazz tradition-alive.

Who's in defransesco's trio? Joe Ascione and Frank Vignola?

Slamguy 2008-12-31 10:23:13 PM

Your face!

Charlie Freak [TotalFark] 2008-12-31 10:24:54 PM
Byron Landham has been his drummer for years - he's my favorite organ trio drummer by far - dude can SWING. Pat Bianchi is playing with him also, but I'm not sure on what (he's a Hammond player, too, but he did Rhodes last year, so I dunno) and I'm not sure if he's taking a guitarist along lately, either.

Slamguy 2008-12-31 10:31:35 PM
Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.
