"...Most untalented person in the history of rock n' roll...Sid Vicious"

Oh, come on. That's not very fair to Meg White.

Oh, come on. That's not very fair to [insert your favorite drummer unless it's John Bonham].

Oh, come on. Sid Vicious once said to a musician with some talent, "(Musician with some talent), I can't play bass." (Musician with some talent) replied, "We know, Sid."

/can't be bothered to look it up.
//By far most untalented.
///Other members of the band would unplug him on stage, ferchrissakes.

Meg White can actually play her instrument at least, though not very well. Sid Vicious couldn't even figure out how to play root notes, which is a pretty good indication that he might have been a 'tard.

Love the Pistols, but when sid replaced Matlock,it was the end for them.

Not only would they not give him any volume when they played live, but when they recorded "never mind the bollocks" it became apparent that he was too inept to record with the band, so they had to ask their ex-bassist to come in to record some of his parts. Steve Jones also plays some of the bass on "bollocks"

but Sid "looked good"

HappyHarryHardOn: .... when they recorded "never mind the bollocks...

That was "recorded"? I thought every copy of that album was hand grooved by McLaren with a rusty, coke saturated, razor blade.

/Love the SP's

Well, he may have sucked at bass, but he was pretty good with a needle and knife.

only about 5% of punk is actually playing the music..

does Moby have a big budget movie crashing at the box office and a bunker full of murdered gay lovers in Colorado too ?

PC LOAD LETTER [TotalFark] 2008-12-29 10:28:04 PM
Sid is said to have asked Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead to teach him how to play bass with the words, "I can't play bass." Lemmy's reply was "I know."

Supposed conversation between Lemmy and Sid when he joined the SP: "'Lemmy, I've joined a band called the Sex Pistols as their bass player!'" he told me of their conversation. "That's great, Sid," Lemmy said at the time, "but the problem is, y'can't farkin' play bass!'

Lemmy: "Yeah. It was all uphill. And he still couldn't play bass when he died, I mean, farking hell. Well, and everybody knows that, just listen to the Sex Pistols record that he was on, you know, you can tell it's Steve standing in for him. In fact I'm not sure if Sid was ever on the record, I think it was Steve who played bass."

Another quote:

For a long time, rumours abounded that Lemmy even taught Sid Vicious to play bass. "That's not entirely true", admitted Lemmy in a recent interview, "I tried to teach Sid Vicious how to play bass"

Moby topics start arguments on Fark. Arguments equal more clicks, thus there are more Moby threads.

Take for example the Beastie Boys thread. Everyone loves them, so they approved but there won't be as much traffic 'cos everyone will basically post that they rule and move on from the thread.

All it takes is someone to set off this thread with a ridiculous comment and the page hits will skyrocket. Just my observations. I'm sure Radiohead will be back in season for flame wars soon.

i thought "play" was good in places, but most of it didn't stand up to repeated listenings.

"animal rights", IMHO, is underrated and unique. moby doing an album of rock/metal with ambient thrown in? i'm there!

GungFu 2008-12-29 11:28:25 PM
Sid should have concentrated more on singing - that's how a non-musician gets to be in music.

HappyHarryHardOn: but Sid "looked good"

Remember...The Sex Pistols were nothing more than a 'boy band.' McLaren designed and marketed them in a not too different manner than the other contrived acts in history. That it was punk just gave it an air of legitimacy.

The wikipedia page for Sid Vicious is very poorly written. It was difficult reading such gems as "The junkie who delivered it, Peter Kodick, came and went quickly, when he dropped the drugs off, which was suspicious, as he was a hanger-on, who usually took any excuse to try to be around Sid (though his girlfriend would have never allowed him to stay, since she was not a junkie, like Sid's mother and the "delivery guy" and had no patience for parasites."

Have you ever heard Moby's punk band the Vatican Commandos?

You're spot on, harry, although in his book Matlock says he too the money but never showed up for the sessions, so it may in fact all be Steve.

Somaticasual: only about 5% of punk is actually playing the music..

For the shiatty punk bands that may be true, but the small number of great ones always tried to play well.

Ahhhh fark, I knew there was gonna be at least one of you here...

We've been through this before, you may have been absent. You're completely wrong about that fact.

Well, at least he didn't credit anyone from KISS. That would have been embarassing

Well they had no talent on their own! it's not like John Lydon ever did anything after that!

That's probably accurate. I do remember reading that sid does play on one track, "HOlidays in the sun" however, Steve might have over-dubbed HIS bass playing 20+ times on top of his...

hey, Moby can play a mofoin' guitar. The songs on "Animal Rights" prove that, f'realz. The 12-minute awesome solo that is "Face It", FTW.
