and the thing is, with all the samples, you really couldn't make this album today.

Not only do I think it's the Beasties' best album, but it's one of my all time favorite albums, period.

I still think License to Ill is their best album, but Paul's Boutique is my homer fanboi album of theirs.

Paul's Boutique is their best record, but Licensed has the best beats.

I'm ashamed to say that after literally 13 years of being a Beastie Boys fan, one preferring Ill Communication and Check Your Head and the like, this last year I finally pulled out Paul's Boutique and really gave it the headphones treatment.

The sheer genius of that record is astounding.

fun, and absolutely true fact: That tour was one one where Mike D had taken to dropping LSD straight in the eye. Let's see... what on earth could cause a band to suddenly start putting out bad ass works of genius....?

Ill Communication
probably has their best songs, but it's got some crap in there too. Paul's Boutique is the best start to finish.

I actually like Hello Nasty better. The problem is they haven't been able to top it. It seriously is their best record. Paul's is about equal to it, though the last song on Paul's drags halfway through. Plus on Paul's MCA is still rapping about being a badass gangster for some songs, which was always a minus.

Teddy Hopper 2008-12-29 09:12:40 PM
I for one have been waiting for this for a year and a day
(check that link and the home page if youre a fan of the album.)

Agreed.

And since it has not been mentioned yet, I'll point out that hello nasty is also a great album. it took some time to grow on me, but its on par with the rest.

Also currently enjoying the mix up.

Let's not jump off the deep end here. The Dust Brothers are one of the biggest reasons this album is so astounding.

One of the things you have to consider when talking about this album is to put it in the context of when it came out, no one had heard anything like it before and it completely dumbfounded those of us who expected more of the same like License To Ill from these guys.

It is literally one of the best examples ever of an album being ahead of it's time.

If you are going to troll, at least try to point out something more subtle, like that MCA is a racist, or that Enimem is a much better rapper. Stuff like that.

I think it's a very well-mixed album and I will be much saddened if the re-release gets all the dynamic range sucked away in favor of loudness. I like my kick toms to sound like they've been kicked.

Hip Hop has never been the same since all the lawsuits shut down the free use of samples. I'm not going to get all "old man, get off my lawn" about it, as there is certainly some quality Hip Hop out there today, but we'll never again hear an album like Paul's Boutique (or De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising, which is also sample-tastic)

I absolutely disagree. Check out Blockhead's productions or RJD2's stuff. Same vibe. Maybe not littered with tons of samples, but production-wise, there's still a hell of a lot of listen to.

As I said, I wasn't saying the new stuff isn't good or original. I was only saying that you can no longer find your favorite Beatles album and throw a drum beat on it (just ask Danger Mouse)
