The mother was given facial cosmetic injections of the drug Dysport in the first weeks of her pregnancy in 2005. Her baby was born deaf and blind.

At this point, the only thing they can do is start the child on a regimen of pinball.

St_Francis_P: Huh. I never would have dreamed a virulent toxin might harm a baby.

It's not believed likely that botox injected in the face would somehow migrate to the womb. That's a long way to travel, and it is believed to only spread a couple inches at most.

Babies are born deaf and blind on a regular basis. Blaming botox seems exceedingly premature, especially when based on anecdotal evidence like this.

I never knew whales made noises when they pooped, much less that humans can emulate them. You learn something new every day.

The Helen Keller National Center says there are 11,000 children 0-21 who are deaf and blind. I'm not sure how many of those are due to birth defects.

Helen Keller herself proves that there are other explanations than botox for deaf/blindness as a birth defect. Do you have a quibble with that point?

There was ONE guy that sounded like a dolphin though... it was alarming. I wanted to ask if he was ok.

Wow... that gives the plotline in Star Trek IV a whole new meaning.

True. It's really hard to explain anything to someone who's deaf and blind.

Oh, and as a rhetorical question: who would have ever thought that Botchulism could harm a baby?

But hey, let's take a needle and inject it into our faces because vanity is far more important than health and safety.

Helen Keller was not born deaf and blind. She became so after an illness when she was not quite two years old.

While it did not specifically say so, since the BABY was stated to be Australian, I sort of assumed the mom would be, too.

FTA: A report by the manufacturer a year later admits a possible link with the drug's use, News Ltd reported. Possible birth defects are among 46 different adverse reactions to the botulinum type A toxin used in Botox and Dysport that have been reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration since July 1, 1994

That's a little more than anecdotal.

Hers wasn't a birth defect, so I wonder what you mean. Wasn't it brain damage from fever?

Talk about anecdotal evidence in a previous post and then later use it to prove a point yourself...Brilliant!

illicit:

Actually, it is anecdotal. The method we use for determining adverse reactions is to list all bad things that happen to users as adverse reactions of the drug. If one person during early monitoring of the drug experienced a birth defect (even with a clear alternative explanation), it gets listed as an adverse reaction. It's bad science, but to do otherwise would be bad ethics.

Holden C [TotalFark] 2008-12-28 10:22:02 PM
It's a LOCAL toxin, it doesn't go anywhere but where it's injected. My hunch is that there is going to be no scientific proof of any relationship between Botox and birth defects.

But I also suspect that lack of science proof won't mean diddly, and the news media will eat this up, the trial lawyers will all wet themselves with anticipation, and it will join vaccines = autism and silicone implants = lupus as another bogus medical link to make people afraid and lawyers rich.
