Yeah, it's nice and all, but it'd be priced higher if it were pot.

except it's not really lost like the headline implies. Just several people are fighting over ownership.

And apparently no one wants to pay anywhere near that much money for it either.

That's actually a mineral specimen rather than a jewel: emerald crystals still in matrix, a very VERY impressive museum-sized piece. Saying that this is a 850-pound single emerald is misleading at best. Feh...stupid news reporters.

Beryllium aluminum oxide crystals....

Farking Awesome job LA County Sheriff's Department, I bet you even put it in your super secure evidence locker where all of the drugs are stored.

I look forward to seeing future articles asking for information regarding the whereabouts of said stone.

Pffft, you can't smoke/snort emeralds and it's a pain in the ass to carry. It'll stay there.

Well, it looks like at least 85% of the mass is matrix, not precious beryllium aluminum oxide crystals. (we always called it "bealox" for short)

Gem worth $370 MM and they store it in EL MONTE?? Farking brilliant. Why don't you just go double park your Ferrari with the keys in it in downtown East St. Louis, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Na. It will be gone. I'm sure it will be "misfiled" since it's important evidence in a court case.

"emerald estimated to be worth as much as $370 million."

It is alleged the gemstone's owner tried to go around the broker, who received a $19 million offer, and sell the emerald to the same buyer for $75 million.

Boy, they are throwing the worth of the rock all over the place. Estimated to be $370 million dollars, but the broker and seller are trying to sell for $19 million - $75 million.

Don't get me started how a broker got some on to offer $19 million, but the buyer is able to convince the buyer to pay $75 million, without going through the broker.

Why do I have a feeling there is Insurance payout, involved here. That didn't pan out.

/surprised no one else noticed this.

I wondered where that went. I must have dropped on the way my physical before going to visit my private space station. I'd have gone on my own space ship instead of paying to use NASA's dinky shuttle, but I loaned it to a nice South Korean gentleman some time ago.

Bingo!
That looks to me to be 80-90% junk by weight, with some emeralds mixed in, it's the gem equivalent of weighing the dirt and the planting pot along with the buds during a bust, common practice.
LA's finest, keepin' it classy.

As it is, it's an extraordinary specimen - you wouldn't want to cut it up unless the crystals were exceedingly "gemmy", which, in the photos I've seen, they don't appear to be - most of it looks like "garden" at best - there might not be 200 ct. of gem material in the whole thing. As a specimen, it might be worth in the hundreds of thousands - but $370 million? My bullshiat detector is ringing off the wall. As another poster said, this sounds like a failed scam.
