Ok ok, semi-serious post.

Let's stop trying to get "star powered" politicians into office.

What NY needs to do is move someone up from the house. I propose Anthony Weiner, he already works well with Chuck Schumer and pretty much got shot down from running for mayor of NYC thanks to Bloomberg's money.

Besides, think of all the Weiner jokes we'll be able to make.

FTFA: "If I were the governor, I would look and question whether this is the appointment I would want to make, whether her first obligation might be to the mayor of the City of New York rather than the governor who would be appointing her,"

Her first obligation should be to the people of New York. The Speaker's statement is another example of how completely broken our government is.

This whole situation has absolutely nothing to do with the people of New York. It only has to do with politicians trying line their own pockets... again.

Beware of politicians speaking about someone elses "qualifications" to hold office.

Didn't princess say she would not run for this seat unless she was handed it this time? How quaint this spoiled, never worked a day in her life little biatch, thinks she is owed this.

If she is annointed into the Senate, it says alot about New York. Atleast Hillary actually had experiance before she carpet bagged her way into the Senate.

Nope.

What she said is that if not chosen, she will not run against whoever takes the seat in 2012 and potentially split the vote.

Actually, you full of fail jackass, she said she wouldn't run against whomever was chosen because it might split the party and give the GOP a chance to stick someone in that seat. Had you read the article detailing that little fact, you might have avoided completely embarrassing yourself.

I'm not from New York but, I'll tell you one new policy that is retarded and that's his new sin tax. And yes, it is a sin tax although it's labeled an "obesity tax." The effort would impose a 15% tax on sodas and other non-diet drinks. This will effect even drinks like Gatorade and most fruit drinks that have sugar. Forcing bad food out of the hands of adults is not the answer because it unfairly affects those people who might not have a problem. Finally, Actually, what it really is is a tax on the poor. Who eats and drinks unhealthy foods disproportionately? The poor. I realize his "reasoning" for doing this (the NYS deficit) but perhaps they need to look at the real reason this occured--*clears throat*--Wallstreet. So, what does this man do? Instead of going after those guys he strings up the poor. He can kiss my rear.

Hmm, I'm conflicted on that one.

I'm not sure I would have a problem with a sensible tax on junk food, because in the long run, we, the tax payer, end up paying for the medical expenses of those who overindulge.

However, as you described the bill, I would not support it.

I feel your pain. Working in EMS I have to lift these people on a daily basis and the injuries in our field have tripled as a result of obese patients. The burden on us and the health care system is huge (no pun intended). However, many of these people don't/can't work as a result of obesity related illnesses and simply increasing the health care costs shifts the burden back onto the working classes through taxes. But, "sin taxes" (i.e obesity taxes) is not the answer because it still punishes the poor and those not effected by obesity. There are ideas that may help to solve this issue but in our current economic crisis it will be difficult to implement them.

Actually, you should read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" before you go off talking about stuff you are clueless on.

Here's a hint, it sucks to be poor. And the poor are stupid. It will suck to be poor with or without a 15% tax on HFCS sodas and drinks. If it forces the poor to give their kids water instead of hyperactive inducing sodas then those idiots might just be able to sit still for class and they might actually learn something.

Hey, thanks for your service to our country.

I hold your position in as high esteem as any other first responder and equal to our military. As I have several friends in your field, I have heard about the problem with broken backboards as well as the injuries that morbidly obese patients create.

However, with respect to your comment about the sin tax hurting the poor, I would have no problem using a portion of the resulting tax money to subsidize better quality snack foods (unsweetened fruit juices, nuts etc.) as well as funding our volunteer firefighter and rescue personnel along with getting them the equipment they need to get the job done.

Do you think this might be something you would consider as being a better way to handle the problem?

So, what you're saying is that you have no idea what Caroline Kennedy has done, what positions she has held, if she has experience, any experience or even loads of experience - but you have an opinion.

Don't worry, nobody would ever consider it an educated opinion.

"I'm really coming into this as somebody who isn't, you know, part of the system, who obviously, you know, stands for the values of, you know, the Democratic Party," Kennedy told the Daily News Saturday during a wide-ranging interview.

"I know how important it is to, you know, to be my own person. And, you know, and that would be obviously true with my relationship with the mayor."

She obviously has important senatory things to say, you know?

NobleHam 2008-12-28 10:47:52 AM
Bleh. Dragged in again.

Some misconceptions about Caroline Kennedy:

1. She's lived in New York for a very long time. She didn't move there just for the Senate.

2. She wants to be Senator, not VP. Comparisons with Palin are invalid. LOTS of Senators have no previous political experience when they first run for office.

3. She didn't say she wouldn't run for Senator, just that she wouldn't run against a Democrat in 2010 if Paterson appoints someone else. Big difference there. She leaves open the possibility of 2012 or any future Senate election should a Republican be the incumbent at that point. It's not a matter of disdaining the electoral process, it's a matter of party loyalty.

Yes, she says "you know" a lot in her interviews, but this seems to just be a habitual interjection like "um." I had a math teacher in High School who said, "'kay," at least once a sentence. It didn't make him less intelligent, and he could convey his points just fine. It seems obvious and sticks out in print, but in audio or video you don't notice after awhile.

Generation_D [TotalFark] 2008-12-28 10:55:10 AM
When I see her compared to Palin, why is it that Palin comes off as the one thats actually earned more in her life? And thats saying something.

Caroline-- famous name, but never held a job other than vanity appointments dot org type of things.

Palin -- yeah, ok, she's dumber than a box of hammers at a hammer convention, but she did win some elections, and did convince some voters in her state she was worth electing.

I don't want either of them anywhere near actual power, mind you, but Palin at least can lay claim to being a winner in some actual elections.

Kennedy? patrician empty head . Belongs in the House of Lords maybe.

And am I the only one that thinks "finally, we're just about done with the Kennedys on the national stage" then this gal suddenly shows up to ruin that story line?

She's being appointed, she should have prior substantial prior experience. At the very least, the election means that the person needs to propose policies, take stands on issues, and run a campaign. This crucible is not present in an appointment, so we should appoint someone with substantial experience.

Do you think Sarah will be able to learn as quickly as Obama did?

20 million people and you do not think you can find one person who has attended the ivy league for undergrad and law school as well as having accomplished something in their life? By virtue of the population of New York there are more qualified people.

There are 29 members of New Yorks delegation to the house, all, by virtue of being elected are more qualified then Caroline Kennedy. There is Micheal Bloomberg, there are numerous scholars in New York's many University who were not so incredibly likely to have had their published books ghost-written. There is an entire group of professionals in New York who have actually worked for their positions and their success and not simply have had inherited it by virtue of their last name.

I don't know.
What's the population of Alaska?

Seriously though, if there are more qualified people, or a person who would represent the interests of all of the voters in New York, they should be brought into the spotlight.
