I had a suicidal goldfish, once. When we found the empty bowl, we figured the cat got it, but a few months later we found the mummified remains under the sofa.

Really? 7am is in the morning?

We had one swim up the air tube while we were at work, against the water flow, jammed itself in there and croaked. The long bodied goldfish and koi get pretty hyper. Ours will start racing around the tank and jump high enough to rattle the tank hood doors.

It is possible, depending on the humidity. Still a long ass time, but I can see it happening.

had the exact same thing happen when I was a kid. The poor thing must have been out of the bowl for over 12 hours.

Threw it back in, began swimming around hours later.

Guess those "How to Evolve and Grow Lungs" evolution lessons he'd been taking on the sly really came in handy...

What gets me is that TFA stated that "...goldfish jump when they need more O2..." and that the fish "...had been jumping for quite a while."

(Insert FACEPALM here)

Ya think maybe that they could have DONE something about this...say, change the water, or maybe put a plant in it in order to raise the O2 level?

Pet critters really do communicate their needs in one fashion or another...sometimes it's a good idea to pay attention to what they're doing. Frequently they've got a reason.

Normally when a goldfish jumps out of a bowl, it's because the chemical balance of the water is off, or a spike/drop in temperature has occurred. I hope she checks her water, or the fish will more than likely be back on the floor in the near future.

/i have to be at the aquarium in 26 minutes.

I had a water frog that was too adventurous. He pulled this stunt a few times, until we found him in a dusty corner of a closet in the basement. It was a little too much for him.

The other one lived for about 15 years I think. It became a little much.

For years my conduct has been largely benign and yet without provocation you have severed our detente and forced me to unleash upon you the vengeful flames of a thousand suns. Came in to say this.

Properly cared for, goldfish should NEVER be kept in a bowl. Minimum 40 gallon aquarium for a couple of them, or even better, if possible, a pond.
