I knew a guy once that worked in an optician's that had an embarrassing on-the-job accident.

He fell into the lens grinding machine and made a spectacle of himself.

Paramedics were called to the York Road premises in Penrith at 8.45pm (AEDT) last night to find the seven-year-old girl's arm trapped in a pizza dough machine.

Would anybody like to tell me why a seven year old kid was near a pizza dough machine at 8:45pm? Does Australia have child-labor laws?

Looks like there wasn't mushroom in that machine.

The dough machine is pretty strong; the pizza place I worked for back in the day had very strict policies on who could operate it. None of the rest of us were allowed near it.

On a serious note, they can probably roll her back into shape in no time at all, but she's likely to have a long term problem with a desire to be covered with pepperoni and mushrooms.

So child labor is allowed in Australia?

7 Years old? WTF was she even doing near the thing?

Sylvia_Bandersnatch 2008-12-28 09:48:08 AM
I used to manage a couple pizza joints. TFA doesn't say if this "pizza dough machine" is a mixer or a sheeter -- two totally different things. But I suspect the latter. You don't get 'stuck' in a mixer, it just rips your arm off and then you're free and it keeps going like nothing happened. But a small child could conceivably get their arm stuck in a sheeter. An adult would just get their hand horribly crushed.

A restaurant kitchen is no place for a child. Or even a lot of adults.

Having grown up in a pizzeria, I knew just by looking that I didn't want to fark with that thing. The big-ass hook was my first clue.

A crazy idea I know, but apparently some pizza shops are family businesses and sometimes parents have inadequate supervision of their children. Also, many pizza shops open at night because that's a popular time of day to eat pizza. I dunno, it might catch on outside Australia; maybe they should try opening pizza shops in the US at night. Let me know how that works out.

This reminds me of the time a workmate fell into a crucible of molten steel, we had to push him under with the pole kept for such situations, instead of trying to save him.

He made a toast-rack of himself.

Hah! Fun times! Almost as funny as the lens-grinding machine joke!

Good thinking, the resulting lawsuit would have cast you into the pits.

There is a lot of restaurant equipment that could be used in a Saw movie. The slicer alone......*shudder*

Probably the dumbass parents who let it happen, thus keeping the pizzeria from realizing their full profits from the night.

It doesn't actually say it was in a pizza shop. Just that the paramedics arrived at the "premises." Maybe it's a household who just really loves pizza!
