I'm not very familiar with Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy),
but I loves me some Knopfler.

/ big D.S. and Knopfler fan ever since i was a kid.
// saw Mark in concert, summer 08, him and his band are pretty damn good.

Is Knopfler the Christ-y guy who used to be awesome in Grand Funk?

You should try Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar", "The Cowboy Song", or "Dancing in the Moonlight"

That's Mark Farner.

Mark Knopfler was the guitarist/leader of Dire Straits.

Thanks, dude!
i'll seek those out and listen to em!

ok... i know i've heard "the boys are back in town" by them... but not much else. [i didn't realize it was them who did that song until now! lol]

A long time ago... 1997/98 I got a box of records from a friend of my parents... one of them was a Thin Lizzy record... i'm not sure which one it was, and i don't really remember if it was good or not... i think it might've been "jailbreak".

but that box of records introduced me to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, and got me more into the Beatles.

Slick!

Just mentioned to my parents that Mark did the score for The Princess Bride. Picking up an 18 track Thin Lizzy's greatest hits (Dedication or something) used was a great find. Especially the guitarists that came and went in the arc.

Oh, and this is very cool but I was wondering if it was going to be mumbling "Cowboy Song" Phil or "The Rocker" Phil. Still awesome.

I don't know if it is just me, but I really like the Communique phase that Knopfler went through back in the late 70s/early 80s. The critics didn't give it too high of marks and the album did not sell as well as the others, but I really like the atmospheric tones that many of these songs had.

/King's Call definately has this flavor

It's not just you, mate. It's me too.
I love the production values and Mark's guitar tone on "Communique". It's such fat strat tone, yet mellow, clean and clear and flowing and colourful.
[as opposed to his biting/thin/spikey Strat tone on the debut --- think "Southbound again" and "in the gallery".]
It's very hard to describe in words, but if you listen to his tone on that album, you'll know what i mean.
Same with his guitar work on Dylan's "Slow Train Coming".
Same producers. Same time frame.

I also like his guitar tone on "making movies" kind of like a combo of the debut and communique.

"Single Handed Sailor" is one of the very best songs on "communique", IMHO. Although some may be considered remakes, by some people,
ie. "Once upon a time in the west" = "In the gallery"
"Portobello Belle" = "Wild West End"
"Lady Writer" = "Sultans of Swing" / "What's the Matter Baby?"
etc.

if you haven't seen / heard this vid yet, i think you'll get a kick out of it:
top 5 rare D.S. tracks/"b**tlegged" song clips... [1977-1980]
[note: varying sound quality]
Link (new window)

- "In the gallery" live [1980 boston] different drum beat, almost funk/disco-ish.
- "Six Blade Knife" demo 1977
- "Once upon a time" 1979 live.
- "Single Handed Sailor" boston 1980 [different drum beat, funk/disco version]
- "sultans of swing" version 2

I hadn't heard that one up 'til now. Awesome!

HeadLever:

I really like that "Communique"-era stuff as well. Knopfler is just a terrific guitarist with an elastic, graceful style. You know a Mark Knopfler riff immediately when you hear it.

Chet Atkins called him one of the best musicians he ever worked with, and that's high praise indeed.
