As much as I dislike disco, I can't say most other pop dance music is any better. From what I can tell, it's all sort of meant to be mindless and disposable.

Sgygus [TotalFark] 2008-12-27 05:41:49 PM
St_Francis_P: mindless

Trance dance ... dance trance.

Yeah, past about 1993 trance went downhill fast. Some of the trance before that was quite good. These days it's pop schlock.

Disco never went away. It was lurking under rocks and things, like anthrax spores.

kibblesnbits [TotalFark] 2008-12-27 06:03:44 PM
noooooo

I had to put up with it the first time around, so just keep it over on THAT side of the pond this time. Please?

Somebody get Steve Dahl on the phone, and book US Cellular Field for July 12th-- let's celebrate the 30th anniversary of this (new window).

(Sox will be playing away, and won't be home till the 17th... plenty of time to fix the giant crater in center field.)

/was there

Too bad two thirds of the fulltime line up of Chic have passed. Be sweet if they could comeback.

As for disco itself, forget some of the more garrish parts and it had some good stuff. Some of it was produced on a level people today dream of, and without the benefit of ProTools.

Weaver95: well that should make Tony P very happy.

Solid gold awesomeness!

Fano 2008-12-27 09:53:06 PM
Disco has been back since like 2000. I started noticing the platform shoes around then, and a lot of the club/dance music sounds like updated disco.

Why resurrect a dead horse?

/Hated disco in the 70s.

It's the clothes. Nothing will kill those synthetics. They just wait, and bide their time until they sense weakness.

Those who do not remember the '70s are condemned to repeat them.

They used to have a Leisure Suit Convention in Des Moines...sort of like an early Fark party.

The real question is when roller disco will come back.

I knew I should've saved that white T shirt with Disco Sucks scrawled with a Sharpie, circa '78.

Good times.

And didn't Madonna try to bring it back a couple years ago?

Hey, my wifie really enjoyed the 70s. Disco was mostly a bit before my time, but hey, why not go retro?

Hasn't this story run every year since 1996?

/Just glad we ain't seeing a hair band resurgence

Yippee! That means we're about 10 years away from the 80s coming back. And as we all know, that's when music was at its apex.

Did you know that disco record sales were up 400% for the year ending in 1976? If these trends continue...

I thought the 80s revival had come and gone already. It was called "electro", or "NuSynth", or "Futurepop", or whatever.

So an unpopular Republican president, tainted by scandal and an unresolved, unpopular war, is being succeeded by an earnest and intelligent but untested young liberal who ran on a centrist platform and familiarity with Christianity. This occurs after an oil shock and during a credit crisis, a flareup in relations with Russia after years of relative quiet, environmentalism is on everyone's lips, terrorism is on the rise, Israel is at war with its neighbors, a guy won a record number of swimming medals at the Olympics and disco is back.

The only people who can possible like this are Reds fans.

It still needs to be polished a little more in order for it to be a true comeback.

And it needs to find its way out of shiatty Eurotrash clubs.

I'm glad they mentioned a few bands in the article. I remember that when my own generation's music was gang raped by the media - they really didn't get it.

I bet in ten years this "Disco movement" will be recontextualized.
