So, uh, are they going to promise not to poke Russia with a stick again like complete farking idiots? Because that didn't work so well last time. And we don't need to be dragged into their stupidity, which is why they don't belong in NATO until they have leadership with decent judgement.

Why does it seem that much of American foreign policy is based around purposefully antagonizing the Russians?

Haha. US puppet state get thrashed like a dog when they started a fight with Russia. Some shiat-stirring Israeli "advisors" got killed too. Good result!

i'm pretty surprised that the right-wing blogs haven't tried to advance the link between what happened in georgia with the tanking of the russian economy. i know if i wanted to make a case for possible astute bush administration foreign policy decisions i'd go out of my way to look at that one. i'd guess there are two main reasons for the failure to develop the argument - the first being that the typical right-winger is not really capable of genuine interest in world events, and the second that they all went big on the trite "blame russia" theme at the time of the conflict.

Ninja Wicked: Why does it seem that much of American foreign policy is based around purposefully antagonizing the Russians?

Because no matter what we do, the Russians will react like the thin skinned children that they are. Their worldview hasn't changed much since the mid to late 80s, and their worldview at that point hadn't changed much since the days of serfdom. They wish that they were big boys and that they could play in the big boy's sandlot, so they built up a cache of weapons and started dealing with the people that the rest of civilization wouldn't have anything to do with.

To the Russians, the Cold War is as over as the Civil War is for our backwater brethren in the deep south.

There's probably not much connection. Russia's economy is still based on resources so they're vulnerable to outside occurrences. If anything the conflict made it clear that investments in Russia are vulnerable because Putin is a fascist. This may have made some investors pull out. The reality is the US treats Russia based upon the size of its economy while the Russians think they should be treated according to how many nukes they have. What's inconsistent in US policy is we treat China by how many nukes they have rather than the size of their economy. The rules are that you have to treat countries by the size of their economy and you yourself can only act according to the size of your economy. When this rule is broken, war happens.

Georgia is not "the Bear's backyard". Russia's "backyard" is Siberia, their own property. Georgia is a sovereign nation, and no more Russia's "backyard" than your house is your neighbors side yard. They get to choose what they do their their country, and Russia needs to quit crying like children about it and focus on their own crumbling country.

MOSCOW (AP) - Only a few months ago, the Kremlin was talking about pricing its oil in rubles and making the ruble a regional reserve currency, giving it a status closer to that of the euro and the dollar.

But that was before Russian tanks rolled into Georgia, the Russian stock market crashed and the price of oil fell by half.

The ruble has declined steadily since the Aug. 7 start of the five-day war with Georgia, losing some 10 percent to 12 percent of its value against the dollar. Without intervention by the central bank, which began in early September, it might have fallen further, faster.

i think it's down around 14% now, but i'm not sure

Georgia? We're going to risk another Asian land war over Georgia? We're supposed to be all weepy about whether Georgia remains an independent democracy? Should we really waste resources and American lives for that godforsaken, ethnically explosive crap-hole? Am I going to continue asking rhetorical questions?

Bone up on your recent history, man. When Putin came to power at the beginning of this decade he tried to appease the West, did everything we asked of him in advancing democracy and free-market capitalism.

And what was his reward?

NATO is practically on the borders of the Rodina, missile interceptors a stone's throw from Russian territory, and security guarantees for Russia's ethnic antagonists. If I was Vladimir Putin I'd be feeling pretty duped right now.

I'm as red blooded as the next American but whether I want to admit it or not, we pretty much reneged on everything we agreed to with Russia. Putin is probably taking a look around at what cooperation with America got him and saying "fark this, if we had done things our way from the start none of this would be happening." One can hardly blame Putin for this.

Wow, imagine that, letting other countries decide their own fate instead of letting Russia do it for them. I agree with you, it's awful. It reeks of freedom and self-determination.

It was pretty popular in America before and during World War II.

Bolshoye Spasiba! Finally someone with a brain. Oh, and to all of you who do not know, the Cold War is over. I know you are all disappointed because the terrorists weren't as scary as the Republicans made them out to be. Don't go hating Russia just because you don't feel pride in yourselves unless you are hating someone.
