Sadly, no one seems to be working on fixing beer that's bad from the get-go.

trouzourt: Blessed are the beer makers..

Not these beer makers:

The new types of bacteria were found with the unwitting help of her younger brothers a couple years ago while they were also attending the University of Saskatchewan. Too cheap to buy their own beer, the boys made some home brew and offered her a glass.

The beer, smelling like cheese with sludge on the bottom, was too disgusting to drink, Haakensen says.

Ruining beer is a serious drinking problem. Let's hope she is better with the cleanliness than her bros.

They are talking about beer spoiling like it's a bad thing... in case of Coors/Bud/Miller anything would be an improvement...

alacoco 2008-12-27 06:26:44 PM
That's actually some interesting research. This could be a boon to breweries.

It does. Saskatoon is the biotech capital of Canada. U of S has medicine, dentistry and a vet college. Only one in Western Canada to have all three, IIRC.

She has that kind of psycho un-hittable expression and hairdo. Kind of a Sara Pallin thing going on.

I don't think the Canadian government would let her succeed at her project as then Fosters could become an Australian beer in North America again.

I've only been to one liquor store in my life that really did it right. They kept all bottled beer in a dark cooler and only had a shelf display to show what was available.

Light destroys beer.

farkinsinism 2008-12-27 08:15:08 PM
"...a DNA-based technique, that has big breweries around the globe hoisting pints in celebration.."

indeed... so, the people who make bad beer in the first place are pretty excited about this.

I did my share of beer research in my U of S days, and never kept it around long enough for this to arise.

I'm guessing not. You have to go there to meet them. I really only came to Calgary for job prospects, myself. Saskatoon would still be my preference. It has soul. Calgary tries too hard to be something it isn't.

As a Sask. ex-pat living in BC for 20 years now I somewhat agree, I left cause I like going outside in the winter. :)
Saskatoon seems to have a disproportionate amount of nice ladies, who now seem to all be in Calgary, those lucky bastards! When I was going to SIAST back in the day loved going to Louies at the U of S for shows, good times indeed.

I was on the 500 block 9th for a year, and 200 block Main for a couple of years. Really, how often do you come accross a Laundra-Bar. I still remember the radio ads for the Wash N Slosh, encouraging patrons to "have a beer while you wash your gear" or "have a scotch while you wash your gotch".

Mr. Gunn 2008-12-27 09:26:28 PM
FTA: "Beyond her PhD in beer, Haakensen says there's not much opportunity for her to have a career doing beer research. "

FTFH: "No career in beer", says Monique Heineken.

From her bio: "I learned of the many parallels and interconnections that exist between all areas of science and witnessed the synergistic benefits to be gained through interdisciplinary utilization of knowledge".

Layman's translation: "I kill in buzzword bingo."

My god man, a SK thread. That's rarer then our famed seat belts.
A cookie to who figures that reference out.

Born and raised in SW SK. Went to school in Moose Jaw and enjoyed my trips to saskascratchabush.

:)

Back on topic, I am surprised this research is even looked at. I would prefer research in self cooling bottles. My beer doesn't stick around long enough.

Saskatchewan References that may confuse people.

Bunnyhugs
Rider Pride
Corner Gas
lots of obligatory small town references

Things you'll never hear in Saskatchewan...

* Nope, I don't think there's a Reserve around here.
* I heard the bonspiel was going to be alcohol free
* Did you hear Nicole Kidman was spotted in Prince Albert?
* Duct tape isn't going to fix that.
* Come to think of it cancel that beer, I'll have a wine spritzer.
* We don't keep firearms in this house
* Is the seafood fresh?
* Sorry can't help you, I don't know where you could find a VLT.
* I think John Deere Green looks tacky
* No kids in the back of the pickup, it's just not safe
* I think it's fair that Teresa lost the CDN Idol competition, that little Albertan hobbit was just way more talented.
* Honey, did you mail that donation to P.E.T.A.?
* So that's a tractor.
* Perogies? What is that?
* Why would we need beer? I thought we were just going fishing, (hunting, golfing, for a drive, curling, across the street)
* Honey, we don't need another dog
* Who's Tommy Douglas?
* So a Co-op's a store? Is there one in this town?
* Too many deer heads detract from the decor
* Could you give me a hand to draw this map. The top and bottom are just straight lines, what bout the sides?
* I just couldn't find a thing at Canadian Tire today.
* Over here is our line of tofu meat products.
* Aw Tim Horton's again, there's a Starbucks down the street
* Why would you need a big truck like that?
* So that's a Buffalo, what's a Bison?
* Did you remember to change your clock?
* I was thinking of adding a spoiler to my lowered Honda.
* Are you going to make it to Saskatoon for the gay parade?
* I don't think the Roughriders have a chance this year.
* I've got two cases of Corona for the Grey Cup
* Could I please be served in French
* I just don't feel like Bingo tonight
* Shame about Moose Jaw getting hit by that hurricane. (mudslide,earthquake, volcano, avalanche etc.)
* So, what phone company are you with?
* Hey, here's an episode of "Corner Gas" that we haven't seen
* I don't have a favorite farm equipment brand.
* It's just over that hill. (or just around the bend in the hiway)
* I'm just going to skip white tail season this year, I can't find any one to tape The View.
* I'm rooting for the Eskimos to take it.
* Nope, no more for me, I'm snowmobiling home
* Say, Hon, It's getting chilly out, throw a sweater on the poodle would you?
* I don't think drinking grain alcohol would be a good idea.
* Oh I just couldn't; Hell, she's only sixteen.
* I'll take Shakespeare for 1000, Alex.
* Duct tape won't fix that.
* Honey, I think we should sell the pickup and buy a family sedan.
* I'll have a grapefruit instead of that doughnut.
* You can't feed that to the dog.
* Too many deer heads detract from the decor.
* Spittin' is such a nasty habit.
* I just couldn't find a thing at Walmart today.
* Trim the fat off that steak.
* Cappuccino tastes better than expresso.
* Has anybody seen the sideburns trimmer?
* Wrestling's fake.
* The tires on that truck are too big.
* What nice body this Merlot has - cheeky, yet subtle.
* Nope, no more for me. I'm driving tonight.
k.. thats it for SK stuff :).. Enjoy

I remember having to buckle up crossing the border. Sask had the first seatbelt laws.

The admission form to get into U of S was one of the hardest I've ever seen.

"Do you have a pulse?"

Look . . . Beer, like all other kids of food, is SUPPOSED to go bad. That's what it does. Because going bad is nothing more than being turned into a waste product by something eating it.

So, as the farker above said, drink it before it goes bad.

It's very simple.

Dude, I am living in the 200 block of Main as we speak. Sweet deals abound, it's a small world.

Katalyst, where the hell are you? How is it that I have ended up so near fellow farkers? Also, Saskatooners should consider a beer night sometime soon.
