Weird. Cowardly. And more American Elite than Democrat.

There really are two countries, John Edwards. Wait -- make that three: conservative, liberal and New World Aristocrat.

Yeah, seriously, fark somebody for being at the right place at the right time.

And you seriously think she'd say that she would run against an incumbent in 2010? Let's face it - that seat is a safe (D) seat. If she came out and said that she'd run in 2010, she'd be preemptively challenging another Democrat.

She said she wouldn't run in 2012, and would support whomever was selected. There was nothing in the article about her being petulant. I read it as she didn't want to get in the way of whomever would be up for re-election.

"So, she was very encouraging, and that was, you know, that was nice because she's a huge inspiration of mine."

It was such a freakin' awesome job that she couldn't wait to get the hell out of it.

I can see why Caroline doesn't want to actually go before the public. She comes across as a vapid idiot in this interview.

Caroline Kennedy said she would not run against another Democrat in 2010 because it might split the vote and give a Republican the opportunity to take the seat.

This is how politics works and if it was your guy, you would be parading around his political loyalty.

And this is why the Republican Party will never be anything more than a despised opposition party, ever again.

What she said (paraphrased) is that, if someone else is appointed to that seat, it's assumed that that same person would run for election of that seat in 2012. If that were the case, according to what she actually said, she wouldn't run against that person for that seat.

Meh. I really don't care who gets Hillary's senate seat. It'll go to the highest bidder no matter what, and I doubt that person (whomever it turns out to be in the end) would have any sort sympathy for the people living in the state of New York.

I suppose I should be angry about the bidding war that's going on right now over this....but I really can't muster the outrage anymore. we've seen the end of capitalism and now we're seeing even the last pretense of democracy stripped away as power groups and dynastic families bid to see which scion gets a senate seat for christmas.

Meh.

Cheer up. Letting the market decide the value of senate seats is free-market capitalism at its best. With any luck we'll have democracy in commerce.

I'm sure that if the governor of New York were Republican, the righties would be all in favor of appointing "the right person," and the hell with that election nonsense. Not to mention trying to convince Jeb Bush to run for president in 2012 because he has the right name.

Besides, I thought possession of huge amounts of wealth validated one's godliness, as far as the evangelical Right was concerned.

No, that's the wrong way to go about it. We should have state legislatures elect US senators. Think about it - I can't really affect a state-wide popular election, or the governor appointing one of his buddies to a senate seat....but I can give my local representative an earful. I can make damn sure that they pay for it come next election cycle. My local representative will know my opinion(s) and won't want to cross me or people like me. If they fark up, I can make sure they don't get re-elected. And they know it, so they'll vote accordingly.
