What is the sheep thing about?

Born2late [TotalFark] 2008-12-27 06:43:48 AM
It appears they're shearing the sheep. What's up with that?

/agree, she's smoking. Thanks subby!

Glitchwerks 2008-12-27 11:20:53 AM
Actually, they stole the sheep thing from the KLF. Pop will eat itself!

here's how old I am:

My LITTLE SISTER has a black leather motorcycle jacket with a painting of her face on it (done by a Goth artist the piece was titled "Death takes a Halliday") from the 90's when that sort of thing was just the height of goth fashion

Nice pic, subby.

A shame that Garbage basically took what they did and made a farkton of money.

/saw Curve in Cleve. some years back and was saddened that all their synths were pre-recorded.

Curve is goth now? Granted, not a huge stretch, but still.

anyway, my favorite Curve track: Superblaster

these are probably the same people who call anything remotely melancholic "goth". Kudos for not calling them emo, I guess.

Either way, I've seen Curve being lumped in with both the Industrial and Goth crowds and it kind of annoys me.

I always liked "Ten Little Girls" off the Pubic Fruit comp. Got me through my freshman year in college. Also - Organ Fan by Silverfish. And yeah - I always knew that Garbage ripped them off badly - I would expect better from Butch Vig.

The early rave scene actually has more rights to them then you goths. :p

Hands off, cos the FSoL remix of "Rising" was legendary.

"you goths?" I stay the hell away from that shiat :P I just figured they were a dancier, poppier version of MBV.

FSOL did a remix of one of Curve's tracks?

Curve - Blackerthreetrackertwo (Discogs)

That obscure little remix was one of the best things they ever did and fit very nicely in with "Tales of the Ephidrina" album.

Curve is "goth" because the chick is pasty and has black hair.

...just like how saccharine sweet mainstream pop singer Joan Osborne
was labeled as "alternative" in the 90s because she had a trendy nose ring.

Curve is far more related to Lush or My Bloody Valentine than say Fields of the Nephilim or Death Cult/Southern Death Cult.

deathon2legs 2008-12-27 02:20:51 PM
Thanks, subby. I've loved the song for a long time; never saw the video before. At least I don't remember it if I did. Those were some hazy times.

/always thought they were classified as "shoegazer" music, myself.

Goth?

sonnyboy11 2008-12-27 04:26:30 PM
While I certainly agree that Curve is not exactly Goth, they do have a sonic texture similar to Sisters Of Mercy, especially the Eldritch solo version of the Sisters. And the Sisters almost always get classified as Goth.

Goth like Bauhas? Lush and My Bloody Valentine are closer, but I think of them more like plain old alternative rock like Placebo, and sort of weirdly enough, newer stuff from Skillet.

Curve, especially Pubic Fruit, never goes out of style for me. I've still got them on heavy rotation even when most of my other tastes have changed.

Things wrong with your post:

1. Not knowing who Shirley Manson is, or not making a farking obvious connection to what gulliver_redrick wrote only two lines above.

2. Making your own non-existent connection between his post and the headline.

3. Not understanding the difference between greater than and less than symbols.

4. Using the already obnoxious "protip" when errors 1 to 3 have been made.

5. Making a poor analogy--artist:genre::artist:artist.

You should be ashamed.

in retrospect, I probably would've put them more akin to Automatic-era Jesus and Mary Chain.

Fender Jaguar: shoegaze :: Ibanez 7-string: nu-metal.

FeedTheCollapse: Fender Jaguar: shoegaze :: Ibanez 7-string: nu-metal.

I must be really confused - I'm working on some shoegaze-style material on my Ibanez 7-string. I've never enjoyed nu-metal, but I was a big Morbid Angel fan way back when and still am a big Meshuggah fan, and they both use 7-string guitars (now Meshuggah has custom-made 8-string ones).

As for Curve, I threw Doppelgänger on my iPod recently and was listening to it while stuck on a bus coming home in the snow. I wouldn't call Curve shoegaze, as it's hardly dreamy or ethereal like the other shoegazers (MBV, Slowdive, Lush, Ride). It's more a cross between electronic and industrial, with the industrial going to the wayside with each following album.

listen to No Escape from Heaven, Superblaster, All of One, etc. They're not quite shoegaze as far as Lush, MBV, Ride, etc go, but they're definitely in debt. They're much closer to shoegaze than Industrial.

my 7-string reference was to how every nu-metal act in the late 90s seems to have owned a 7-string guitar. I think Justin Broadrick of Jesu uses a 7-string, so i guess it's not too alien to shoegaze territory.

I saw this band years ago at a tiny club in Albany. When I say there were maybe 20 people in the audience, I am not exaggerating.

They rocked anyhow.

And yeah, pics don't really do her justice. Simply beautiful.

Ah, those are all on the one album of Curve's that I'm missing (Cuckoo). I ordered it recently as I've been on a huge shoegaze bender lately, but it has yet to show up.

Yeah, Justin uses a 7-string and the sound is astoundingly heavy live. I was huge into Meshuggah when I got my 7-string back in '01, so they were the prime influence.

Thanks for the backup PSOP!

Didn't realize that someone was blending their idears and coming up with a turd.

(And I didn't call them goth, though I can kinda see it...)
(Also, screw all that genre-specific snobbery, right? If you like it, you like it. Over and out.)

I think that was my first Curve album. I hated it. Definitely not shoegaze, though.

FeedTheCollapse - I finally got Cuckoo in the mail last night and listened to it this morning. I definitely heard the shoegaze influence on the tracks you mentioned (and some of the others). I listened to some of Doppelgänger again and I hear the shoegaze influence more on better speakers.

The earbuds work great for Loveless, but not so much for Doppelgänger. And yeah, by the time Come Clean rolled around, the shoegaze was gone. Very electronic, though a few of the tracks on Gift had a dreamy feel to them.
