(The Morning Call) Interesting This year was the best year ever for concert revenue, with Bon Jovi's tour leading the pack. Seriously... Bon Jovi? As in people paying to see him? Really?   (mcall.com) divider line 72

Newsflash: Older concertgoers have more money to spend on concerts than twentysomethings, so acts like Bon Jovi and Hall & Oates will rake in more than more deserving live shows like My Morning Jacket.

Wow, so an established artist with a HUGE catalog was able to sell more tickets than lame indie bands nobody has ever heard of? I'm SHOCKED.

The old lady is a massive fan and dragged me to a show at Giants Stadium. Beatlesque bedlam.
Cool moment #1: They opened with 'Twist and Shout'
Cool moment #2: At the end of a song the guitarist played a snippet of Jimi's 'Castles Made of Sand'

The other two hours? Complete and utter dreck.

I'd "THIS" this but 1) I'm one of those older farks who 2) does indeed have more money than you and 3) wouldn't mind seeing Hall & Oates in concert but 4) has no farking idea who "My Morning Jacket" is supposed to be and not even interested enough to Google it.

/probably some emo band working on their 14:55 of "fame".

I don't know about that. They put on a good show back in the late 80s.

Went and saw Foreigner and Bryan Adams in concert and Journey, Cheap Trick and Heart. Awesome concerts.

/get off my lawn and all that stuff.

I was nodding my head in agreement when someone was saying Bon Jovi raked in so much money because their fans were all old farts that could afford expensive tickets. Then it occured to me that *I* am one of those old farts. I didn't even really like Bon Jovi back in the day though.

the opposite of charity is justice: 4) has no farking idea who "My Morning Jacket" is supposed to be and not even interested enough to Google it.

I singled out My Morning Jacket because on their last tour they played for over 3 hours at every single show, with never more than 15 minutes between a set break. And no opening act. And an average ticket price of $25. There are better bands out there, but MMJ continually gives 110% for their fans.

To everyone else, I wasn't implying that Bon Jovi or Hall & Oates were bad (though the former are); but I'd be beyond surprised if their shows matched even one aspect of what I said about MMJ.

Let's make it easier for you: More people want to see Bon Jovi than want to see My Morning Jacket.

My Morning Jacket is a jam band! Of course they play 3 hours - each song is probably half an hour long and all their songs sound about the same. So, unless you're stoned, there's no point going - that 3 hours will feel like 12 hours.

Oooh. I wanna play

1) Faith No More/Guns'n'Roses/Metallica (Toronto 1992)
2) Winger/Slaughter/KISS (London '93 or '94-I simply can't remember the year)
3) Genesis (Toronto 1986)

I only specified the date on the Pantera show because it was a New Year's Eve show (hometown show at that.)

I saw the same GnR/Metallica tour you did at Texas Stadium. The only thing that it did for me was to make me hate Texas Stadium. About 2/3's of the way through GnR's set, I said to myself, "I'm tired, I'm hot, and I've heard everything that I want to hear," and I left. One of my friends told me later that Axl threw a tantrum and stormed offstage at the end of the show.

Jon Bon Jovi is still ruggedly handsome guy. The band, Bon Jovi and the late Bruce Fairbarn created one of the truly great rock albums, Slippery When Wet, and some of rock's best anthemic rock. Dead or Alive is a fantastic piece of work.

So yeah, I can see the band being a big draw. The trajectory of major rock acts is pretty amazing as the kids who grew up with a certain band becomes adults and it takes them back to a different time and place. It's a pretty cool form of time travel.

About five years ago, I went to see Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young (a generation before my time), and it was pretty amazing how their music captured the essence of a time. I was lucky enough to get invited with free tickets; otherwise, I would have missed out on something special I would never have seen.

Ace Frehley's Ghost: One of my friends told me later that Axl threw a tantrum and stormed offstage at the end of the show.

Actually, our concert was the first James Hetfield player after he burned himself, and it was GNR's first concert after the Montreal riots.

Genesis was cool 'cause it was my first 80000+ concert and I was simply in awe. And the dude behind us kept handing us Kielbasa slices.

ahhh, the '80's and '90's...good times...good times.

Top three shows this year

1.The Lawrence Arms/Falcon, Teenage Bottlerocket, The Sidekicks, The Brokedowns
2. Riot Fest (ALL, The Ergs, Leftover Crack, Teenage Bottlerocket, Paint It Black, The Methadones, etc...)
3. Dillinger Four, Scared Of Chaka, The Brokedowns, Lynyrds Innards

Anyway, here we go:

1. Bon Jovi puts on a great, entertaining live show
2. Bon Jovi has been putting out #1 hits since before your favourite indie band was able to sit in the front seat of a car
3. Bon Jovi has staying power
4. Women think Bon Jovi is hot
5. His tickets cost a lot, because he is selling out arenas and stadiums at every show. His shows are insanely profitable. It's like U2 or The Rolling Stones. No I'm not comparing their music; I am comparing the profitability of their shows.

None of these are even real bands. I just strung a bunch of words together to see if anyone would try to do a search for them. I don't know what I was trying to prove.

Lumber Jack Off 2008-12-26 12:27:39 AM
top 3 for me:

1. Paganfest in Atlanta featuring Ensiferum, Turisas, Tyr, and Eluveitie
2. Gwar / Kingdom Of Sorrow / Toxic Holocaust in Tallahassee, FL
3. The Ocean in Tallahassee, FL

/not bad but last year was certainly better for shows.
//still pissed that I had to miss the Carcass reunion tour due to a prior engagement, as that probably would have been concert of the decade for I.

2)If you believe that then you need to grow the hell up. Gah it's like anybody who listenswanks to Death Cab thinks their generation invented coolness, radicality, and tits. Newsflash: you're the last people to show up to pop culture, not the first.

I can't believe I had never caught him live before. What that man does with a guitar is simply mind boggling.

Saw Nine Inch Nails 2 times this year.

In terms of visual effects, it was unparalleled by anything I'd ever seen.

In terms of musical performance, it was well worth the 3 hour drive time to each show...and then some. Best shows I've been to.

/On rail, both times.
//Lexington, KY and Fort Wayne, IN.

Best show for the money (not including early Lallopaloozas) I'll probably ever go to was Cyprus Hill, Rollins Band, Beastie Boys. $28 in 1994.

Rollins and Beasties both played almost 3 hours each.

//saw De La Roach covering for HR (he was sick that night) when Bad Brains was on tour in the early 90s.

Lets see, best concerts 'bang for the buck' that I've been to?

Metallica (almost 4.5 hours, 25 bucks)
Queensryche (twice, once in Madison for the Livecrime show)
Billy Joel
Garth Brooks (my wife did this. it was a hella good show even if the music wasn't really my thing, they rocked the joint)

AfterTheGoldRush 2008-12-26 09:08:28 AM
I just had to check out MMJ after skimming through here.

They seem to be the epitome of an "emo"-type band. And with all the wild hair swinging about, they are cartoon-like parody of themselves. Made me laugh. Couldn't pay me to attend a concert, based upon my three minutes of sampling on you-tube.

Teddy Hopper 2008-12-26 09:43:14 AM
Probably all the best concert experiences I've had have been small to medium club shows, rather than arena and stadium shows. I'd have a hard time at this point ponying up for a stadium show where you can barely even see the stage

Best shows this year:
girl talk
bassnectar
gogol bordello
also in contention: the egg, underworld (at APW), the new deal (at camp bisco)
One of the main criteria, along with the quality of music, is the quality and quantity of nubile young females going nuts.

Evar:
Phish NYE 1994 (the flying hot dog show)
black crowes (small club, last year)
the Spin Doctors, free show at some park in Montclair NJ, right before they got "radio" popular. At 17, i was an old man in the crowd. it was a mudfest, and people were just passing handles of vodak around. It was crazy. And as a bonus, the "life is a highway" guy opened.

(OK, so i cant say if those are really my best evar, but those three experiences pop into mind right away. There are dozens of others from huge acts/festivals down to club shows.)

Best show i had front row tickets for but it got cancelled because Mike D got hit by a bus while riding his bike in NYC:
Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, No Doubt, Busta Rhymes - 1999
(ticket bastard got me seats that were like section 4 hundred something row AP, and i say, do you have anything closer? and she takes a look and says: "best available is section A, row 1, would you like those?" and i ask "same price?" yup. (moral: always ask for best available.) but then mike d gets hit by a bus and i still have the unused tickets.

/will not apologize for liking early bon jovi

heavymetal [TotalFark] 2008-12-26 09:49:16 AM
I don't know about Bon Jovi but I have 2nd row Motley Crue tickets for Nashville in February. To me it is worth it. It will be a concert with a band whose music I know, they put on a great show, and it is just a killer party.

I saw Motley Crue 3 times on the "Carnival of Sins" tour a few years ago. Hell of a show and hell of a party each time.

Best show I had tickets to but got cancelled:

Busta rhymes
No doubt
Rage against the machine
The beastie boys

God damn I wish they hadn't cancelled that show
