Just saying, lets wait a couple of years. He could end up being worse than Bush (I'm not sure how, but it could happen).

Right now, he's a nothing and a nobody when it comes to presidents. Even the Duh-bya cultists weren't so incredibly idiotic as these liberal dimwits who want to name everything for ol' Barry O. BEFORE HE EVEN TAKES OFFICE!

People on the right want to blame him for everything - before he's even taken office - so, it seems to balance out.

Having to name a sports team after a guy named with the letter "o" is different.

Critters don't really make it.
The Obama Opossums? The Obama Ostriches? The Obama Ospreys?

Or you could get pretentious.
The Obama Overdrive. The Obama Olympians. The Obama Opus.

Maybe even throw in obscure:
The Obama Octohedrons. The Obama Ochos. The Obama Ovums. (what a bunch of pussies)

I see quite a few missed the little factotum at the bottom of the article.

FTA In November, the Ludlum Elementary School in Hempstead became the nation's first school to adopt Obama's name.

It's already happened. So yea that gives the right a little room to biatch about the guy prematurely. The left Lionizing him Prematurely is the balance.

/Hopes soon people start to come to their senses both right and left.

Actually, I think the name change has more to do with being the first black president than worshiping him.

But don't let that stop you from continuing the stupid left talking point about the messiah and all that. I appreciate it when people label themselves.

He's the first black President. Even if he ends up being a mediocre Commander in Chief, he's earned his place in the annals of U.S. history (and probably World history) for all time.

It's really weird how touchy some people are about Barack Obama considering he hasn't really done anything to disagree with yet. Obviously he could turn out to be a bad President, but that really doesn't diminish what he's accomplished to date, or the historical significance of it.

There was a Dead Indian Road near where I live. Then it became politically incorrect, and they renamed it Dead Indian Memorial Road. That's about as generic as it gets.

We also have a Jumpoff Joe Creek Road, named after a man somewhat involved in creating dead Indians (in the Modoc War).

Remember when schools were named after pillars of the community? George Washington didn't have schools named after him because he was simply the first president. Gone are the days of naming public areas after heroes, adventurers, scientists, and patrons. Now we name them after politicians and bureaucrats.

Americans deserve what they get.

I have to agree. Running a brilliant campaign and breaking the color barrier are accomplishments in their own right, but they miss the point that it was so he could become PRESIDENT. Nixon, Buchanan, Grant and Hoover could have had just as ground breaking a campaign and election, but ultimately no one gives a crap.

Gee, I didn't know that terms like "Duh-bya cultists" were used by right-wingers. Oh, that's right, there are idiots who stpudidly blindly presume that refusing to worship Barry O. means that one MUST automatically be a "right winger". Reasonable people can debate the wisdom in naming buildings after a President who has yet to obtain office, and that's all fine and fair. But you can argue that position without having to make the sum of your argument akin to "He's a nobody who hasn't done anything!"

That just makes you look retarded.

While at it, can you take John Glenn too? Unless you're in Florida or Ohio, that should not be a school's name.

Obama only came to Hofstra for a debate, nothing more. A school on a island shouldn't have named for him here unless we were in Hawaii where its 73 degrees now as opposed to 43 here

Merry Christmas

Actually, I would make the argument that the school should be named after him merely for being the first African-American to be elected President. He accomplished the task of becoming elected. Although I think it would make much more sense if the school were in Chicago.

Phil, I'm not sure why you don't view this as an accomplishment. However, I understand your argument that you'd rather wait until we see what he does once he's actually in office before people start naming buildings after him.

They're both valid points. It just depends what message the school is trying to convey by doing so. Do you want to celebrate a legacy (Phil's point) or the historical significance of one accomplishment (TwistedFark's point)?

But Phil, I have no clue what you mean by saying patience isn't a virtue of the left. I can rattle off a myriad of executive orders that Bush invoked so as to bypass due process, making it easier to incarcerate people. And the whole Iraq WMD lie in order to launch a war. It would seem that the right (or at least Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, et. al.) are far less patient than any Democratic politician I can think of.

YixilTesiphon 2008-12-25 12:24:04 PM
Things shouldn't be named after people who are still alive, and things should never be named after the festering sores that are politicians.
