Tutu is right, I agree. It's all on South Africa. They are like the China to North Korea in this situation.

I'm assuming that he's saying that the threat of violence should be used to depose Mugabe, not that someone should put a pistol in his ear and give him a Jersey retirement party.

Small Hands Make It Look Bigger 2008-12-24 12:26:46 PM
That's not ironic. It would only be ironic if he won the nobel peace prize for violently overthrowing a dictatorial leader.

/don't look at me like that, you all knew it was coming!

What did they used to call that thing where you put a burning tire around someone's neck - a South African necklace or something?

Hey, if I was over 2000 years old, I'd be pretty damn peaceful I think.

The sad thing is that there doesn't even have to be that much violence if South Africa would just step up to the plate. Supposedly Zuma was more critical of Mugabe than Mbeki but thus far it doesn't seem like they're changing their policy.

Swampthing in Korea 2008-12-24 12:53:59 PM
I heard a joke.

What is the difference between Mugabe and Mbeki?

Five years.

Any farkers heard a similar thing and can explain the background?

Swampthing in Korea: can explain the background?

When Mugabe started in the early 1980s, Zimbabwe was very well off, a relativeley normal, stable country. Now its a shiathole.

When Mbeki started, SA was a relatively normal, stable country, and Mbeki is turning it into a shiathole.

When I say 'relatively' normal and stable I mean for Africa.

Peace is the way of the open palm.
It is warm, gentle and inviting.
But just as the drunken husband can strike his wife with the palm of his hand, the open peace sometimes prove harmful.

Violence is the way of the closed fist.
It is hard, forceful and destructive.
But just as the closed fist can hold the egg within it, so can violence be used to protect that which is precious.

The answer, as with most things, is to find balance.

Tutu was elected and ordained the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, and primate of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa (now the Anglican Church of Southern Africa).

Now that's just not right.

No. It's been around way longer than that.

Though to be fair, I first learned about it from an X-Men comic.

The lower classes and powerless people are indoctrinated into non-violence so that those with power can commit violence upon them without fear of reprisal.

When the powerless take action against the powerful, it is called violence. When the powerful take action against the powerless, it is called justice.

At this point, has Mugabe poisoned the well sufficiently so that any regime that replaced him would be just as corrupt?

Mobutu Sese Seko did that in Congo (Zaire). Reduced the population to such extremes of venality and survivalism that no honest government could rise on his ashes.

I think that Zimbabwe is a more hopeful case than Congo. I've listened to some Zimbabweans who think that although the country has been devastated, if people (most of whom are very educated) who have fled were either to come home or contribute money, then the basic infrastructure is in pretty good shape and the country could return to some normalcy. Zimbabweans on the whole are very educated in comparison with population of Congo, which has pretty much been a farking mess since King Leopold decided to make it his African playground.

Occam's Chainsaw: I'm assuming that he's saying that the threat of violence should be used to depose Mugabe, not that someone should put a pistol in his ear and give him a Jersey retirement party.

Why would you assume that when the article says the opposite? He doesn't say kill him as he wants a trial, but violence should be used if necessary.

FTA: Tutu also told BBC radio that violence could be used to remove Mugabe, who should then be indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

/to come to this conclusion, I made as few assumptions as possible, eliminating those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory. ;)

There are religious white men who advocate the need to take violent action inside other countries. There is a great example currently in office. You make a connection via race, which proves nothing. I fail to see your point. Do you have one?

Everybody should be for peace, but they should also know that sometimes violence is required to prevent the peace from being destroyed.

Paradoxical? No. Temporary violence can lead to lasting peace, if the right methods are used.

/Don't resort to violence quickly.
//Resort to violence thoroughly...
