From TFA: "He made mistakes but he'll admit it."

Oh, sure, that really sounds like Palin, who winks her way through debates and sneers at criticism.

His qualifications in education may be a little slim, but as a center he owns the paint. Now you tell me which is going to be more important when Obama challenges Putin and his staff to a game?

I was unaware that Sarah Palin had graduated magna cum laude from Harvard.

Or that Palin's experience - as a mayor of a tiny town and a couple of years as a governor - were parallel preparation to be second-in-line to a potential ancient President with health problems as Duncan's 16 years in public education, with seven of them as the CEO of the country's 3rd largest city's school system.

Yeah, they are indistinguishable.

"Education advocates say Duncan's qualifications are slim" because he is not buddy-pal with entrenched interests among teachers unions or bloated central administrations. GOOD.

I read the headline and thought, "No way... he wouldn't pick her!" and I was absolutely right. Thank goodness.

Many high schools saw their security deteriorate as students were sent across gang lines into different neighborhoods and school cultures, said one Chicago organizer who asked to remain anonymous. "The receiving schools were terribly impacted so kids going to them faced violence. And kids there faced violence," she said. "Communities have cultures, and you're crossing gang and ethnic boundaries, and to do that without thought is so worrisome."

Translation: segregation is okay when WE do it.

The US Dept. of Education was created in 1980 by combining offices from several federal agencies. It's mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. It's 4,200 employees and $68.6 billion budget are dedicated to:
• Establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, and distributing as well as monitoring those funds.
• Collecting data on America's schools and disseminating research.
• Focusing national attention on key educational issues.
• Prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal access to education.

It seems that it is more of a PR position and that any knowledge of running an actual school system would not be needed.

The greatest mistake any educator can make is doing what the parents' tell them.
Parents are stupid. They are venial and shortsighted. We gotten ourselves into this mess because we listened to the parents.

Parents want what's best for their children, but they don't know what is best for their children.

Really? That's the best you can do? You couldn't figure out how to work Goddiditism in there somewhere? I'm disappointed with you. Here, I'll help you get started:

"That Duncan is unqualified is abundantly obvious, even if you don't have a GED in law. He denies the science of Intelligent Design science, and refuses to have the science of Intelligent Design science taught in science class. Science."

Personally I'm against having the DoE as I believe it does more harm than good...

But from the article it says the new choice is a proponent of charter schools. I have always been in favor of charter schools and school vouchers as it makes schools compete for students and provide a better education overall. But talking to the ardent democrat friends I have, they haven't always been against charter schools as they take money away from the "public school system". Any democrats on here want to ring in?

I guess Palin has entered the vocabulary - "the Sarah Palin of such-and-such" apparently communicates the combination of incompetence and ambition well enough that even the Fark Independents (Hi, SkinnyHead and NYZooman) get it.

Yeah, basically. "Charter school" can mean a lot of things. Here in NYC there are a number of schools that have some amount of independence from Tweed but still are publicly funded and -- here's the important part -- take students from the public school pool.

What a lot of liberals object to is the use of public funds for schools with exclusive/exclusionary admissions. If a school educates students from the general pool but doesn't have all the bureaucratic overhead to deal with, I have no problem there.

It wasn't so much Sarah Palin's lack of experience that bothered me, it was the fact she is a fundy whackjob who still thinks the US should play Cowboy Georgie and shoot 'em up. Not to mention the drilling crap (=public lands giveaway) and her suspicious public/family life. No comparison.

I voted for Obama because he is needed new blood in DC.

The general pool being the behavior problems and slackers that ruin schools in the first place. Can't have a school filled with kids who actually want to be there and learn, that's exclusionary.

I am a teacher in a Title I school.

I think picking Duncan was a HUGE mistake.

My mother-in-law is from Chicago, and though she was poor, she never let her kids or grandkids go to school in Chicago public schools. I take her word for it that this guy is an ineffective moron.

The same can be said of Palin's tenure as governor-- nothing amazing, but adequate be Alaskan standards (albeit slightly less corrupt than usual, usually they're a couple billion into the kickbacks by now, I think she's still under a million).

The distinction has more to do with the fact that Palin was running for a much more important position than the difference in their qualificaitons (though there is definitely a gap there).

Kevin72 2008-12-24 04:13:40 PM
Arne Duncan? Maybe he thought it was his mother Anne Dunham.
