Okay..this one is too easy.

Pay to play, anyone?

It_Really_Does_Glisten [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 06:57:14 PM
That's just terrible. I never would have voted for Obama had I known that he would appoint to his administration people who donated to his campaign. Nevermind that TFA says that five of his Cabinet appointees contributed nothing to his campaign, and that several of his advisors and Cabinet picks actually contributed to Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primary. It's the appearance of impropriety that matters.

Also, I'm still not sure about his relationship with this Bill Ayers character. There are too many unanswered questions.

How much did Hillary donate?

Sir, you have an Internet from me.

Don't know, but it must have been a lot. During the primary she wouldn't shut up about him.

$2,300.

IT'S A LIBERAL CONSPIRACY!

They're not cabinet appointees, they're apostles.

Hack.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 07:26:58 PM
...except for the one's who didn't. (Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colo.), Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D), Timothy Geithner, retired Army Gen. Eric Shinseki and retired Marine Corps Gen. Jim Jones, and a bunch who only donated after their first choice (Clinton) dropped out.)

GaryPDX: Pay to play, anyone?

Yeah, those $4,600 donations really put him over the top...he owes them big time.

It_Really_Does_Glisten: It's the appearance of impropriety that matters.

That's actually the principle at the heart of our insane, convoluted edifice of campaign finance laws like McCain-Feingold.

At this level, politicians trade favors and power, not money for the most part.

Rhyno45 [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 07:33:44 PM
Because putting your money where your hope for change is, is bad how?

coyote71 2008-12-23 07:34:10 PM
WOW!!!

You mean he appointed people who donated money to him? Who were more than likely to be Democrats and therefore more likely to donate money to the Democratic candidate? People who were more likely than not to be politically minded, and therefore more likely to contribute to a political campaign?

Wow, color me shocked.

AZtoJapan [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 07:35:40 PM
Most of his appointees are democrats and probably would have donated the max no matter who was the candidate. This is surprising how?

Epsilon [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 07:38:25 PM
And as far as donating "heavily" goes, there is cap, ya know. Most of his appointees already have good careers with good pay. I would have donated more if I wasn't nearly broke.

SurfaceTension [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 07:39:54 PM
How can you heavily contribute to a campaign when the most you can donate is limited by law?

Mordant [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 07:42:41 PM
SurfaceTension: How can you heavily contribute to a campaign when the most you can donate is limited by law?

Remember that "heavily" is relative... most "conservatives" these days think Arugula is elitist food and probably have to shower after a day's work instead of before.

Churchill2004: At this level, politicians trade favors and power, not money for the most part.

True, but in this particular instance, it's pretty much a non-issue.

Some people who donated to Obama's campaign got Cabinet appointments. Who cares? Even TFA said this is pretty much business-as-usual in Washington DC.

Wake me up when some real corruption happens.

Sure, for the most part, but how much does the President make a year ? Not much, a guy like Obama probably saw a chance to make a whole bunch of Kenyan shillings and now we're all going to pay the price.

Thanks, libs.

You'll never find out about the real corruption, because it's not illegal. Only the idiots and the petty thieves ever get caught breaking the letter of the law.

Mordant: Sure, for the most part, but how much does the President make a year ?

$400,000/yr plus enough perks and benefits to see that he lives like one of the richest people on the planet.

MorningBreath: this is the biggest non-story ever.

Do you think the word has gone out on the right that there's going to be an prize given out for the most inane faux-controversy that you can get some mainstream media outlet to pay attention to? I mean, it's hard to imagine what else explains the sheer desperation with which all of these less-than-molehills are being touted as rivals to Mt. Everest.

I mean, the Blagojevich "scandal" has a known bad guy caught on tape cursing Obama out for being incorruptible. By any objective measure it's an "anti-scandal"--the sort of thing you imagine a newly-elected President would hope and pray for, like being caught on film rescuing a puppy or something. And yet, it's Captain Wharrgarbl to the BlogMobile! Go farking figure.

Rats. He's onto us.

Civil_War2_Time [TotalFark] 2008-12-23 09:21:31 PM
I want a true change.

I want a President-elect to actually pay for his (or her if that had happened) inauguration out of their campaign contributions. I don't think either of the last 3-4 soon-to-be Presidents would have had a problem obtaining those funds; or if had them "stashed" away somewhere where taxpayers would have not had to foot the bill.

They should all have to pay for their own bash, no matter who they are, and regardless of what their purported political affiliation is.

It's just my opinion, but they should pay themseves to be glorified in front of their constituants, or have their masses pay for it for them.

I'm a conservative Republican, and, well, I'm amused by this whole thing.

Democrats contributing to Democrats? Wow, alert the media!

People support people who are on their side, duh. Not a big thing.

Civil_War2_Time: I want a President-elect to actually pay for his (or her if that had happened) inauguration out of their campaign contributions.

They pay for the inauguration with donations and ticket sales. IIRC, the only thing the tax payers pick up is security costs- extra cops, secret service, etc.

not that that isn't going to be QUITE pricey, but at least the taxpayers aren't paying for stuff like the 12 inaugural balls.

I have one word, "Brownie." All you whackadoodles can now STFU. Obama's people have resumes that actually pertain to their positions.

INeedAName 2008-12-23 11:06:41 PM
Subtrollmitter: Poorly played sir

FTFA: It's not uncommon for those chosen for Cabinet positions to have donated heavily to the campaign of the presidential winner. While campaign contributions don't hurt in Cabinet selections, they are more a reflection of "ideological agreement, friendship or party loyalty, rather than in return for campaign support," said Kenneth Gross, who leads Skadden Arps's political law practice.

No, no. Gary is a man of principle and a patriot. It only looks like partisan whining. Without Gary no one would even think of holding Democrats and/or "libs" accountable for their actions.

What's the next link to go green: "study finds that sky is blue"?
