Much like STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, as a song it is fine.

But, repeition has dulled its charms irretrievably.

I first heard the song during the holiday season of 1995

Really?

I remember that from the early-mid 80s. I hated it then. and i still hate it now.

I always thought the theme song to Square Pegs they did was greatness.

HATE this song.

Then again, this is why I generally hate Christmas music. This is a sub-par song performed by a sub-par band, that only exists in the public consciousness almost three decades after it was produced because it's about Christmas.

Just like "Christian rock" - it's music that's too sucky to make it on its own merits, but because it's about Jebus, I have to hear it on that one station while my car stereo is scanning - you know you have one where you live too, it's probably called "The Rock" or "The Touch" or "Touch the Rock" or some such happy horseshiat.

Heh, this is actually one of the few Christmas songs I can tolerate.

deevo 2008-12-23 03:03:52 PM
This is the greatest popular Christmas song.

Also, "I Know What Boys Like" is one of the greatest '80s songs. That American Idol girl ruined it, though. Not even The Bouncing Souls could do so much irreparable harm to it as that hack did.

I dig the Souls version just because it's purposely goofy. Also because they are my most favorite band ever.

Everyone has an opinion; too bad you have issues with Christianity .

Personally, I like the song but I have to add that I have gone out of my way to avoid Christmas music this year. Two local stations went non-top C'mas tunes on either 10/31 or 11/1 and I decided to ignore it until today.

It's been tough too cuz I have over 60 CDs of it - and before you start ripping me you have to hear Hendrix doing Little Drummer Boy.

Or Hawaiian slack keyed C'mas songs or The Kings Singers doing
The Angels Choir. There are TONS of great songs out there if you look.

Personally I never want to hear Jingle Bell Rock or Frosty or the extremely lame Lennon or McCarthy songs again.

Christmas Wrappings is a good song; I first heard it just four years ago and wondered where it had been.

Ah...the only "modern" Christmas song I like.

As for the "Little Drummer Boy". I FARKING HATE THAT SONG!

And NOBODY should EVER try to cover "Christmas Wrapping". That WAS Patty Donahue. Nobody else could pull it off.

It's been done...by the Spice Girls in 1998.

Always liked the original tune. That's a crackin' bass line in there, no?

and Fogelberg, Same Old Lang Syne.

Patty Donohue had that "couple-years-ahead-of-you-in-HS, toughened-up-and-knowing, living-near-the-trailer-park, hanging-with-the-stoners, wearing-short-skirts-and-denim-jackets, winking-at-you-in-the-hall-and-giving-you-false-hope" thing better than any singer I've ever heard. I dig this song.

/off to look at yearbook...

Good IDEA! I'll check and see if iTunes has some good schtuff!

Yesterday Michigan and Smiley's Dancehall Reggae version of Little Drummer Boy randomly showed up on my iPod. I cracked a smile (especially because they can't sing in key during the key change part...)

I didn't know that song until I just youtubed it. The Donnas do a somewhat ok cover, assuming you aren't attacked to the original.

I don't think I'd want to hear a Joe McCarthy Xmas song...

It'd probably go something like this:

It's beginning to look a lot like China...Commies everywhere!
Take a look at the people now.
Reading red books by Mao.
It's against capitalist values and how!

I first heard this song about 10 years ago and I am a child of the 80's... weird, considering I very much remember "I Know What Boys Like" and "Square Pegs."

I think Patty Donohue's vocal is perfect for this song. Sad she died so young (mid 30's?)

I like the song and my wife loves it because it is like a five minute audio romantic comedy.

But my favorite Modern X-mas song is Billy Squire "Christmas is the time..."

I love that song, especially the bass line. I've been hearing it for years, but this is the first year I'd noticed the little bit of "Jingle Bells" at the end.
