I really don't see Iraq becoming a democracy and an ally of the U.S. after what's happened. What's more likely is that the strongest man standing in Iraq (Al Sadr) will become the leader and be, most likely, very Saddam-like.

The recession probably won't go the depression way, so I don't see him filling the Hoover role either. One thing the article writer didn't mention is if BOTH things fail, if a depression hits and if Iraq doesn't form a democracy.

I still say, regardless, this guy is the worst president of my lifetime. I say this right now, not holding for later confirmation of historical events. I'll let those decide if he is the worst ever.

One thing is for certain...he got everything he ever asked for...except SS reform. Seriously, name one thing he tried to accomplish and didn't? Congress bent over for him. The population elected him twice. He got 2 wars. He passed every initiative he ever wanted.

Worst/best...who cares.
Most effective at governing his way...most definitely.

Kevin Hassett, director of economic-policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, is a Bloomberg News columnist. He was an adviser to Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona in the 2008 presidential election.

So, we have a member of a neocon think tank who was also on the McCain campaign team claiming that GWB wasn't really all that bad. Mind if I get my opinion from someone a little less biased?

/I can play that game too.
//History is written by the victors. I'm not sure Bush has won much lately.
///I won't be too disappointed if he only ends up 3rd or 4th worst in history.

I_C_Weener: Congress bent over for him. The population elected him twice. He got 2 wars. He passed every initiative he ever wanted.

to be fair, he had a republican congress for most of his term.

and the fact that he "got everything he ever wanted" is WHY he will be regarded as the worst of all time. virtually every single one of his policies, with the possible exception of his AIDS policy in africa, has been detrimental to the united states. every single one.

under his watch, the EPA has been eviscerated, the SEC has been defanged, the justice dept has become a laughingstock, science has been under religious attack, terrorism has increased worldwide (including the worst attack on US soil ever), the economy has plummeted, torture has been advocated, the constitution has been shredded, and our world standing is near zero.

basically, everything the man has touched has turned to shiat. he is, without a doubt, the worst president of all time.

Why are we proclaiming Bush's AIDS policy in Africa to be a success? I mean, yeah he spent a bunch of money there, but the programs themselves are seriously flawed. Abstinence only!

Bush is good like Judas is good. If Judas hadn't betrayed Jesus, Jesus wouldn't be able to save Christians from their sins. If Bush hadn't been such a lousy President, Obama wouldn't be able to save Americans.

Yes. I agree, rabid Bush haters will be disappointed that no matter WHAT history says, there will still be blind bush supporters crying about how the whole world was against them every step of the way.

The 26% of Americans just understand something the 74% don't I guess....

Well... to be fair, lets look at the worst three Presidents of all time and see how he stacks up against them on the fail-o-meter.

Andrew Johnson: One of only two Presidents to ever be impeached. He was a white supremacist who sided with the old Confederate leadership after Lincoln's assassination in an attempt to torpedo the racial reconciliation of Reconstruction after the Civil War.

James Buchanan: His policies increased the division between the North and South and led to the secession of the South and the Civil War. Then rather than place pressure on those states not to secede, he simply threw up his hands and said, "there ain't nothing I can do to stop them."

Warren Harding: First he couldn't keep his dick in his pants (and had a couple of illegitimate children with the wives of other men). Many of the women that he had been with were sent out of the country and paid huge amounts of money to keep quiet. Most notably though, Harding appointed a bunch of cronies to the White House a couple of whom were involved in the Teapot Dome scandal (still the largest corruption case in US history when adjusted for inflation).

Dubya has some serious competition if he wants to race these three to the bottom.

actually, this is a good point. it is likely that bush's only positive legacy will be obama's election.

true - but those guys were grossly negligent in only one or two or three specific areas. dubya has been criminally deficient in virtually every single aspect of his presidency.

Shenanigans! Johnson tempered the Reconstruction, preventing the wholesale rape and pillage of the Southern states. He also brought about reconciliation and healing by pardoning Confederate soldiers, much like Carter when he pardoned the conscientious objectors to Vietnam.

Revisionist history is revisionist.

Bush's Legacy May End Up Better Than You Think:

Anybody remember the long and bloody occupation of the Philippines? What president started that? I'll bet Filipinos know.

Even if Iraq turns into a wonderland where their future prime minister has a shoe fetish, Bush is a narrative of screw ups.

"Ending up better" in this context means quietly marginalized -- as to not remind Americans we do screw up badly sometimes -- relegated to college level history lessons -- where they can't up stage our cherry-tree-chopppin'-can-not-tell-a-lie-born-in-a-log-cabin mythology that permeates our formative years.

Yes. Nothing was Bush's fault, you damn dirty libs. Get a brain! People like Milkbeer have been telling us for 8 years that everything that's happening now is happening because of what Clinton did in the 90s!

Does that mean if bad things happen during Obama's presidency they're all Bush's fault, or if he manages the recession he has inherited, the huge chain of corporate scandals, the housing bust, and (god forbid) a terrorist attack well that it was only because Bush set the good karma in motion?

Nice try simple Jack.

Irving Kristol

"There are different kinds of truths for different kinds of people. There are truths appropriate for children; truths that are appropriate for students; truths that are appropriate for educated adults; and truths that are appropriate for highly educated adults, and the notion that there should be one set of truths available to everyone is a modern democratic fallacy. It doesn't work.

Bah. After living in the south I am of the firm oppinion that the worst thing that could have happened did. Integration should have been compulsory and strictly enforced. The BS that occured for the one hundred fifty years following the civil war could have been avoided. As it is many of these people are some of the most backwards and racist that I have ever known.

nah, his great great great great great great great grandaddy franklin pierce was probably just as bad as him, only he is the only president to not get his parties nomination for a second term.

as bad as bush was, he had/has powerful backers. i think his actions were careful, deliberate, and calculated. the idea that bush is stupid is exactly what was needed in order to enact such a radical agenda. after all, thinking back 8 years, who would have thought such an obvious dumbass could get so much of his agenda accomplished?

A victim of circumstance -- the true path to glory. This is part of Bush's problem too. Half of his time in office is complaining about how someone or something is out to get him.

Republicans have painted themselves as resentful victims for so long, they forgot to govern.

Sarah Palin likes this strategy too. Good luck with that.
