"Straight to Hell"
Best song ever
The original long version

"The Magnificent 7"
Best pseudo-rap song ever.

RIP, Strum-dog....

'Give Em Enough Rope' is my favorite album and 'All the Young Punks' is my favorite song ever.

I have a question though. Why did 'Earthquake Weather' sell so poorly i think it is a pretty solid album?

RIP Joe.

i remember that day well. my mother was banging on my door at 8am trying to wake me up. i opened it, asked her what was going on, and she quietly said, "joe strummer died".

not too long after that i saw an episode of jools holland's show, where he had not only joe, but warren zevon. he changed the lyric to, "i saw joe strummer standing outside trader vic's..." the cameras got a great shot of zevon at his piano and joe in the background with his band singing "A-WOOOOOOO". one of those great moments with two great musicians that we'll never see again.

Yea my experience was almost the same. And like Ricky said Joe's death hurt. That was the first celebrity death that really got me.

And you also overreacted to an obvious joke, so now you're even madder because you got embarrassed.

What I thought was cool and didnt know until recently is that he helped produce Big Audio Dynamite's album 'No.10, Upping St.' He also helped Mick write some of the songs according to the credits. I always thought they never worked together after The Clash broke up. Anyone know anything more about this?

It's up to you not to heed the call-up
You must not act the way you were brought up
Who knows the reasons why you have grown up?
Who knows the plans or why they were drawn up?

It's up to you not to heed the call-up (I don't wanna die!)
It's up to you not to hear the call-up (I don't wanna kill!)

For he who will die
Is he who will kill

Maybe I wanna see the wheat fields
Over Kiev and down to the sea
All the young people down the ages
They gladly marched off to die
Proud city fathers used to watch them
Tears in their eyes

There is a rose that I want to live for
Although God knows I may not have met her
There is a dance and I should be with her
There is a town - unlike any other

It's up to you not to hear the call-up
And you must not act the way you were brought up
Who give you work and why should you do it?
At fifty five minutes past eleven

There is a rose...Yeah!

Forever in my heart, Joe.

You should really read the book reco'd above.

basically, after Joe booted Mick out, Joe and Simmo tried to get on as "the clash" with basically at best, average, and probably more accurately stated, horrible results.

meanwhile, mick had began more further fleshing out the dance / hip hop stuff he'd fallen in love with and which caused friction during his latter days with the clash. i forget whether mick rang joe or vice versa, but yeah, they had a sort or rapprochement over B.A.D.'s efforts.

And i've always heard this lyric (B.A.D.'s "Rush") as Mick talking to Joe:

And of all my friends
You`ve been the best to me
Soon will be the day
When I repay you handsomely
Broken hearts are hard to mend
I know I`ve had my share
But life just carries on
Even when I`m not there

and further, there was chatter of a full-fledged Clash reunion just before Joe died. Perhaps not with Topper, but there was talk of a 2003 arena tour.

It funny you mention that because I always take the first part of The Globe to be Mick talking about Joe, especially since the first part samples The Clash.

Break it on down
Bless you
Bless you
I wanna bless you
Bless you

Where are you going
My beautiful friend
Is this the road that
You take till the end
And if we left behind
Is this the highway
Of our mankind

-RIP Joe

I rarely align with most Farker's musical tastes, but I'm glad to see the near-unanimous love for Strummer. He was one of my idols, and one of my biggest influences.

From the No.10 Upping St sessions.

I know the background to how they got back together, being someone who was into BAD before The Clash, but my mind is patchy at the moment. I have a magazine article that details Joe's involvement with No.10 Upping St. I'll try and find it. However, Joe's involvement with BAD predates the second album and you can see Joe and Paul in the Medicine Show video.

Also, one of my favourites from No.10 Upping St, Dial A Hitman, the dialogue between Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne, is actually written by Joe, uncredited.

oh....if you haven't seen "Westway to the World", do so immediately. Phenomenal. i like the part when Mick is talking about "Sandinista!", and he says "I always pictured this as.....an album....for like, those guys that work on oil derricks."

among the various cool things in the doc, it was really poignant to see Topper talk about his demons and also Joe talk about the great mistake he made.

'n every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n roll,
Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold,
But I believe in this and it's been tested by research,
He, who farks nuns, will later join the church.

Another DIAF wish for the Al Gore comment.

I met Joe when he toured with the Mescaleros.
Big hand that shook mine.

Every year in Phoenix we have a memorial and benefit show starring our best, with The Glass Heroes headlining. They've opened for The Damned, Sex Pistols, and many others, cool guys to boot.
We had it this year Dec.13th already, everyone come next year, K?

THIS IS PUNK ROCKERS!

Ablejack 2008-12-24 09:49:49 AM
After a show in a small venue, Joe was chatting with a group of us. Roadies were striking the scaffolding and Joe remarked that they were making the real music. The sound of workers working. We would laugh about that later because he was so passionate about punk politics and we were so (a)pathetic. Years after, I saw the band perform at a stadium with the Who headlining. The Clash didn't translate so well in the NFL football arena. Seemed like some overblown U2 production.

At any rate, those were some fun times, being excited by music we felt was made for us. I am unaware of "cool" music for kid's (15-25) today. Hopefully it's only because I'm too far out of the loop and media saturation drowns out the few gems. Otherwise it's because there is none. unlikely.
