Great cover.
Man, Cee-Lo's got an amazing voice!

Here's Thom and Jonny from Radiohead doing a cover of their own. "The Rip" by Portishead. The sound quality is bad, especially on the vocals, but it sounds like a great version.

CtrlAltDelete [TotalFark] 2008-12-22 05:21:23 AM
It was a good cover, but the instrumental at the beginning sounded too much like the In Rainbows version, and I'm expecting Thom Yorke to start singing and then all I hear is "AaaaaaaaaaeeeeeIIIIIIIIaaaaeeeeoooooAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!"

And then I laughed.

I didn't know Thom was a Farker.

Reckoner is just about the best song in the world.

I've seen Gnarls cover this and it's really good.

Good cover, generally good musical ability, but the vocals were so loud it drowned out everything else.

Would not listen again, but then again I haven't started listening to "in rainbows" yet. I need to buy it.

The only thing I see to the right of the headline is an ad to get a call from Mickey Mouse on Christmas day. What does that have to do with Radiohead?

Kenwhat: The tambourine player must feel like a huge douche while everyone up there plays their instruments and he just stands there shaking a tambourine at a microphone.

Danger Mouse
could just stand up there and nod his head to the beat and he would still be the biggest badass on the stage.

/awesome cover

Yeah... um... One hit wonders don't typically release six gold/platinum albums after their one hit.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-12-22 09:50:34 AM
Well the music was good and accurate [especially the drums and guitar], but the vocals left something to be desired. Sure he can hit the notes, but the quality/delivery is way different from Thom's. [this guy seemed rough and loud, but Thom's delivery is smooth and sweet-sounding. [sorry, that's the best as i can describe it]

the tambourine player is funny... reminds me of a blitz'd out Ray Cooper or that druggie keyboardist from the Late Show. or a crazy professor with outdated garb.

True, but a "one hit wonder" doesn't release six gold/platinum albums, quality regardless.

It was a good cover I guess, but the vocals were way too high in the mix.

And, if you think that was better than Radiohead you have obviously not seen them live.

Meh, nothing special. I feel like I could write a song like that and I think I'm a crappy songwriter.

CityExile 2008-12-22 11:50:15 AM
The musicianship was spot on but something about Cee-Lo's voice that doesn't sit right with me in that version. Or maybe it's because I can really only hear Thom doing it.

Having heard the Cee-Lo version first (not a big Radiohead fan), I think that the two different singing approaches clash if a person has a particular taste for one or the other. Having said that, I think both are great performances, and I would definitely like to see some more of Radiohead live (if, indeed, their music is better appreciated that way).

Not just better, much better.

seriouscoyote 2008-12-22 12:25:06 PM
This cover sounds exactly like Radiohead instrumentally. The vocals are just goofy sounding. I'm not saying that Thom Yorke's vocals cannot be perceived as equally goofy.

If you're as successful as Gnarls is, you need to be changing the songs you cover more than this. This sounds like Karaoke to me.

Tanqueray 2008-12-22 12:37:38 PM
Isn't that the goal when you publish a cover song?

iambrian 2008-12-22 12:44:45 PM
I saw them play this at Lollapalooza this year, both Radiohead and Gnarls Barkely. Reckoner was a pleasent surprise.

Agreed. It sounds good, but very similar to the original, I'd like to see them do something different with it. Then again their cover of Gone Daddy Gone was almost identical to the original too...

I appreciate a good burn (and that was a pretty good one), but I think it takes a lot of talent to take a 40 year old classic that everyone is familiar with and reinterpret it to fit so well with a completely different genre. If you want an idea of how difficult that is, look at the billion other mashup attempts that turned out awful and gimmicky.

Third_Uncle_Eno: the tambourine player is funny... re

Heh that's Danger Mouse, the other half of Gnarls with Cee-Lo. Those two are a good combination... Danger Mouse's DJing ability and Cee-Lo's strong dynamic voice.

Anybody else think the bridge in "Run Away" is some of the best 30 seconds of music anywhere?

Never laid your hands on a set of turntables or audio mixing in your life, eh? Knowing a few classic rock songs on guitar doesn't count, either.

I do enjoy Cee-Lo (and Gnarls Barkely in general) but Thom Yorke just has one of those voices that's almost impossible to imitate, so unless you're doing something creative with the cover, it just doesn't sound right to me.

/I did think that the Portishead cover posted earlier in the thread was great, for what that's worth.

Uh... I know Radiohead is cool and lets people download their shiat for free, but are they seriously not going to sue a band for charging $40 at the gate and playing their songs? Gnarls Barkley isn't some garage band at the local watering hole.

EchoDork 2008-12-22 04:13:57 PM
Reckoner is the only Radiohead song I like. And I like Reckoner a great deal. And I heard this version for the first time about a week ago... and I did not click your link because I don't feel like I ever need to hear it again.

MindlessStonedIndulgence 2008-12-22 04:33:36 PM
I used to really like Gnarls Barkley before they bailed on Kansas City, citing a schedule conflict with Lalapalooza 3 or 4 days later.

It's as simple as:
1. Getting permission from the copyright owner(s) of the song

or

2. Paying royalties

Also, it's the responsibility of the venue, and not the band, to pay any needed licensing fees. This is usually done with a blanket licensing fee, to cover anyone who performs there.

Attacking Radiohead in a headline is the easiest way to get a greenlight for the music tab. And it rarely, rarely makes any sense.

"Here is my opinion, if you disagree here is a name I am calling you in advance."

I know I'm feeding the submitroll but fark you all the same. Why purposefully try to cause a split between fans of two great bands, who probably have a large cross-section? That attitude just pisses me off.

Feel shame

Whatever. There was no "attack" in that headline--only an opinion, and a completely valid one at that. The only reason you saw it as an attack is because you ARE a "pretentious Radiohead" fan.

Listen to "Radiodread" by the Easy Star All-Stars. It's a cover album of OK Computer done in dub/reggae style, and it's great. Afterwards, listen to this again. Then tell me it doesn't fit...

Loved this version.

God, I want Easy Star All-stars to cover another album...

Pretentious: A word thrown around by people who are so uncomfortable with their own musical taste, that they have to belittle others who might not be like-minded.

Carry on.

I like Radiohead. I like Gnarls Barkley. I stopped this song 3 seconds after the vocals started. That is all.
