No. The U.S. was introduced to how the rest of the world experienced reality on a daily basis. Sucks to have to grasp the world reality has come home to the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

I remember it well. A friend of mine was returning from England that day, and I didn't know for hours if that was her flight. Luckily, it wasn't.

Don't worry. We shot down more than enough planes full of civilians to make up for it.

BigWoodenSpoon: Yeah, I bet nobody even took notice of this (new window), three years earlier.

It was huge news for about a month when it happened, but the passengers (except the one) eventually got home. Not to diminish what they went through, but the Lockerby bombing was a greater act of terrorism because it didn't give the innocent people on board any chance.

Did it have a top-secret alien nuclear reactor on-board, with the radioactive material dispersed in such a way as to contribute significantly towards global warming? If it did, then maybe the world as we knew it was about to change. Otherwise, this incident was pretty inconsequential...

Heck, Moses (with his back up, God) was clearly a terrorist. He unleashed various biological and weather attacks on Egypt to terrorize the Pharaoh into giving in to his political demands. He did not seek change through peaceful discourse, or all out warfare, but planned terrorist attacks.

...except that none of that actually happened.

I agree that he was probably one who planted the seeds, but it was really just rhetoric without the outrageous overt acts. Kidnappings and bombings and murders began to happen in the name of Allah, that's when the world actually changed.

GoodasGold: The Big Bang was very violent.

Violence is not synonymous with terrorism.

It would be difficult to label anything "terrorism" until there existed centralize hierarchical governance that could be swayed by the acts of terrorism. War is not terrorism either.

I was responding to the headline.....

In case you missed it.

Twenty years ago, Pan Am Flight 103 was blown-up and the world, as we knew it, began to change

You see, the key phrase is in bold text. Pre Islam, pre Judaism, pre Christianity are not worlds we know. For that matter, everything pre 20th Century is not a world we know let alone be able to relate to on any level. In other words, your comment while possibly accurate isn't relevant to the headline OR my response to it.

To be fair, that is the only kind.

studebaker hoch 2008-12-21 10:19:18 PM
After the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, the country should have gone to a war footing on energy independence, and used full national assets to launch a "Manhattan Project" for battery technology that would make electric vehicles practical and affordable.

We should have gone with nation-wide high-speed electric rail, instead of relying on the kerosene-fueled jet engine.

We should have met with all of the Middle Eastern rulers and said "we're done with your oil. We're done with your Islamic insanity. We're pulling our armies out, we're handing back our bases, and if you can't work out peace with your neighbors, that's your problem and not ours."

We should have pulled inward. Dealt with the Cold War, but also focused on education, national health insurance, and quality housing for every citizen.

We can still do these things today.

carmody 2008-12-21 10:19:54 PM
I remember that. I had just dropped out of college and moved into a shiathole apartment where I got free cable, but the only channel that would tune in on my crappy TV was CNN Headline News. The Lockerbie story and the news of Salvador Dali's death ran over and over again. It was right after my 20th birthday...half my life ago now.

I suddenly feel old.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 10:20:02 PM
Um yeah, Flight 103 was about socio-political issues, religion had nothing to do with it. The thinking behind this bombing is far different from the thinking of the al Qaeda crowd.

Yeah because the only place we import oil from is the middle east *facepalm* also, Libya isn't in the Middle East.
