If only there was a system where baggage could be tagged with some sort of identifying thingee.

But that's the only airline Raymond will fly on.

How do you say that airline's name? Every time I see it, it's like trying to pronounce QNTAL.

Two words..

Carry. On.

If you're staying longer than 2 or 3 days, send it UPS.

yay, free roundtrip-and-then-some for my lost luggage! I hope the Travelocity gnome gets pissed off at being manhandled so poorly

If you're flying from the US to Australia, shipping an entire suitcase would cost only slightly less than chartering your own jumbo jet.

Really, if they want to catch up to other airlines they'll have to start losing alot more bags than that.

Time to start planning another trip to the Unclaimed Baggage store. "Unclaimed." Yeah, right.

I travel for work, typically stay 5 days and have learned to fit everything I need in to a carry on. I've heard all of the horror stories, and had my bags lost once. Thanks but no thanks, I'll keep my crap with me and those jackasses can lose someone elses bags =D
If staying more then 5 days, I'd rather do laundry then carry on.

All of my luggage?

Carry on.

It does cramp on the amount of liquids I can bring but I figure, most of them I can get upon destination.

Marcintosh 2008-12-22 12:42:27 AM
check nothing. Don't give them the chance. Ship insured FEDEX the day BEFORE you travel.
After spending three days of a seven day vacation in the islands hanging out in my bathing suit at the resort (ever price clothing at the resort?) my luggage showed up.
Honeymoon from hell anyway. Sick as a dog, lost reservations, four connections for a "direct" flight, $150 for a three hour hotel stay . . .
Now I ship going to and coming from. To the hotel, and, back to a neighbor.

You should know . . .

The lost luggage is in Honolulu.

Next time tip the luggage handler in St. Louis.

I dunno - 750 bags in less than two days is pretty damned good for a country of only 21 million people. I'd say that's a good effort, no matter how you look at it...

/subbie
//would still rather fly QANTAS than American Airlines or United (are they still in business?)

Eventually, the Aussie media are going to accomplish their goal of destroying Qantas with a negative media campaign.

...and only then will they realise what they've done.

I'm gonna have to agree. If I'm gonna be in a place longer than 5 days...I'll do laundry. Not to mention, I'm more than glad to stuff a few pairs of blue jeans, a shirt or three, and some socks or undershirts in my laptop case.

I'm allowed TWO carry-on bags, even if my "laptop" bag is full of clothes. Manipulation of the airline policies is the best way to go.

Also on Saturday, Mark Arapovic and his fiancee were late for their own engagement party in Cairns after both their bags - from different flights - took more than an hour to turn up on different baggage carousels.

more than one hour and you're late to your own enagagement party? nice planning. can't wait to hear about the wedding on the beach just before high tide.

btw, the 'declared value' you fill in for a FedEx shipment is not technically insurance, it's the amount you can make a claim for if it's lost or damaged. so not a 100% money back guarantee but if they look into it and determine it to be their fault you'll get your money back. i.e. if you wrote the wrong address or didn't package the thing properly, or lied about the contents of the shipment, that's not really their fault.

but if it is really valuable you can always get it *actually* insured through a third party.

also, apparently FedEx pwns UPS as far as package handling (heh) and getting the right package to the right place on time.

Jamieboy 2008-12-22 05:50:39 AM
The airline yesterday said a technical issue in the cargo hold of a Boeing 747-400 flying from Los Angeles to Melbourne caused an unknown number of suitcases and backpacks to be pushed back on to later flights.

What technical issue can a cargo hold have? Was there a hole in it? The door wouldn't close? What? I'm thinking that the issue was they had a lot of paid freight and couldn't fit the passengers stuff in, so screw the paying passenger. I'm sure they didn't need clean clothes and such.

This is why I never check bags on airplanes.

Lord do I hate the carry on jerks who are so important that they can't spend their own time to check their bags and instead waste everyone's time trying to find somewhere to stuff their rolly-poly suitcases. I did some (admittedly non-scientific) observations on my most recent flight, and found that it took about a half minute per passenger to stow all that extra crap. Doesn't sound like much, and hopefully more than one suitcase carrying idiot can find an overhead at the same time, but it adds up. If the aircraft ends up taking off 1/2hr later than it would have otherwise, and we have to wait an additional 15min at the other end to let the baggage handlers take out the stuff that the people KNEW would not fit in the overhead and had to be gate checked, then that sort of cancels out the "oh, I'll save so much TIME by jamming a week's worth of clothes in the overhead compartment" strategy. Time savings? Not for me. I get to the airport on time, with enough to spare to check my bags, and I get to walk through the airport unencumbered by a shiatload of crap. I can catch a nap, go to the restroom, get something to eat, etc. all without having to worry about my stuff being confiscated by TSA or how I'll get a two-foot wide rollbehind through a three-foot bathroom door as a four-foot fat slob comes out the other way, or how I can carry my taco & slurpee AND a suitcase back to the seating area.

Carry-ons: The mark of the stupid traveler.

Start chucking GPS transmitters into the luggage, see what the hell happens. Ten bucks say the transmitters show up on eBay.

The SO got sent to Brazil for work. His suitcases were lost (by Airitalia) and didn't arrive for four days. All the equipment to do the job was in the cases and he had to extend the time out there to get as much as possible done.

/third trip in less than 3 months as well
//although his luggage got there on the others
/coz he flew BA.
