Better remove the water too. Don't want any drowning deaths.

Honest Bender 2008-12-21 09:38:57 PM
Just fence off the beach. It's too dangerous.

Rat [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 09:39:02 PM
It'll look so natural after they're done.

FTFA:"We haven't had any reports of people being injured but they said that they might get injured,"

Might want to remove the water too.

You know, as much as I hate all the nanny state precious snowflake shiat that seems to be more and more common today, I am completely OK with this. Those shells hurt :(

SUBBY IS A RETARD

"This is a highly-modified swimming beach in Port Phillip Bay, it's not like an ocean beach that obviously you wouldn't touch,"

It's a swimming beach for kids. The shells are not your usual sea shells but sharp-edged oyster shells. It's a public health issue to not have children bleeding all over the place.

CarrieWhite 2008-12-21 09:42:50 PM
You used nanny state just to get the greenlight. It's in australia, not britain though.

I really enjoyed the fact that they actually called themselves a nanny state in the article.

FTFA: A long-standing Sorrento resident, who did not want to be named, said the decision was "misguided, far-fetched" and reminiscent of George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

I agree. I don't want to be named either.

Get rid of the damn bluebottles (yanks read; Man-O-Wars), almost stepped on a few yesterday at the beach.

bubbaprog: It's a public health issue to not have children bleeding all over the place.

According to TFA, there haven't been any children with bleeding feet. If there was mass carnage and widespread foot attrition, there might be an issue, but no problems have been reported.

Looked up Mornington Pensinsula, that's south of Melbounrne. I hear there are some nasty sharks around there. Better to just stay out of the water.

It's been like that for 20 years, and no one's bled to death. Yet.

FTA...Mr Stingel said the oyster shells were not part of the beach's natural ecosystem and were believed to have been dumped during a dredging project 20 years ago.

This is a highly-modified swimming beach in Port Phillip Bay, it's not like an ocean beach that obviously you wouldn't touch," he said. "I don't think it's Big Brother gone mad to remove hazardous things that can cause injuries to the public."

While I think removing them is a bit over the top, the shells aren't the ones washed ashore by the ocean surf. They were dumped on the beach during a former dredging project. FYI-oyster shells are really sharp too.

Hey, that's MY seashell collection. Leave it where it is, thank you.

LittleSmitty 2008-12-21 09:58:54 PM
Close the beach and send the little wimps home. Can't get injured if you stay home

The over-reactions in the article and this thread are pathetic. They're getting rid of some sharp crap on a swimming beach that didn't arrive there naturally in the first place.

its still a British colony, nothing to see here.

Merry Sunshine 2008-12-21 10:05:02 PM
The only reason this is even marginally acceptable is this: The shells in question are, in effect, garbage left behind by some sort of building project. They do not occur there naturally. It's OK to remove garbage from the beach.

That said, it would be equally acceptable to leave them the fark alone and tell the kiddos to wear some farking sandals.

I did, you imbecile. You would know that if you RTFA yourself.

My Dad and I were talking about tfa and we both agree what the 'Nanny state' is getting more and more big brother like.

It's Australia? Shouldn't they worry more about the deadly box jellyfish? And the snakes? And the spiders? And the rip tides? And the hole in the ozone?

I was hoping someone noticed that. You can't just throw cliches around inaccurately and haphazardly. Or wait, you can, and it gets you greens. I see.

How will I wipe if they take away my sea shells?

OMG, nanny state nanny state! Next thing you know they'll be removing things like seaweed and dead fish! Somebody had better stop Big Brother NOW!!

Well, here's another one for you: the soil in Yankee Stadium has been sifted so there are no rocks in it.

And the poison thing that lives in a shell that spikes you when you pick it up.

Wow, both nanny state and precious snowflakes in the same headline; a two-fer for the easily amused.

My only problem when I go to the beach is cigarette butts. I don't want to walk barefoot through an ashtray.
