Oh hell no, I don't give a flying fark what any of these women have done, you don't incarcerate people and then go "Sorry, we're too cheap to take care of you with the bare modicum of civility".

Now that I've completed the moral outrage portion of this post and have women in prison and their showers on my mind, I'll be in my bunk.

Yeah... but do feel free to turn the water heater down to about ten degrees over body temp.

Hook 'em up to the water heater intake....

Uhh, hot water isn't a necessity. Cold water helps soap lather just as well. Hell, I've had to shower with cold water a frew times because the tank ran out. Was it unpleasant? Yes. But, these women ARE in prison.

Was lukewarm too much to offer? Listen, these people are trash, but forcing cold showers seems like some form of cruel and unusual punishment if you ask me. That is unusual, and its cruel in the sense that it makes cleansing the body a painful chore.

fortean chicken 2008-12-21 10:23:56 PM
You don't do this crap in the middle of winter to anyone. I hope these women sue the pants off whomever is ultimately responsible.

On the bright side, there won't be any shortage of places for the guards to hang their keys. And if they need any glass cut they'll be in great shape.

In the womens prison
There are seventy women
And I wish it was with them
That I did dwell
Then that auld triangle could go jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the royal canal

Thank me later, ok?

Clearly. It's a good thing everyone in prison deserves to be there, and there are no exceptions to that statement.

Since I don't know what the conditions really are, I guess I'll wait to decide whether or not it's wrong. Are the showers 'not hot' or are they ice cold, for example?

There are scads of attractive women in prison. Scads. I'm not sure what that number is, exactly, but hopefully scads means a lot.

mentaluproar 2008-12-21 10:27:08 PM
They stopped serving milk in the prisons here. Just baloney sandwiches every meal.

They are prisoners, they shouldn't have any more than water and basic food at there disposal. To have anything more is pampering and should be a privilege, not a right.

INAL, but under the federal constituion, prisoners are entitled to one hot meal per day, I don't know what the constutional standard is for shower temp... The only legal remedy will be under the state constution, if it provides greater protection.

Women's prison? Put me down under "do not want."

Remember, the pretty ones get probation.

Hibno 2008-12-21 10:30:32 PM
Maybe if the water is cold prisoners won't want to stick around long enough in the shower to rape somebody.

mrtron 2008-12-21 10:30:49 PM
Nice...and then the hot water pipes burst because they aren't under pressure anymore and the water inside them freezes.

Resulting in a net savings of -100,000$

I agree, and furthermore, let's extend that rule to poor spellers.

cksewell: The lawyers in Oregon are salivating in anticipation of a class-action lawsuit.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking of class action but I came here to post a prediction of lawsuits. As a general rule, any standards applied to landlord/tenant should be applied to prisoner treatment also. (Obviously, some will not be relevant.)

Relatively Obscure: Since I don't know what the conditions really are, I guess I'll wait to decide whether or not it's wrong. Are the showers 'not hot' or are they ice cold, for example?

No heat = water at distribution pipe temperature. That's probably in the 40's or 50's.

So what if they're prisoners? I don't think a warm shower is too much to ask for.

Smackledorfer 2008-12-21 10:32:21 PM
Cold showers aren't that bad, get over it.

I don't see anyone calling for tax money to be spent to prevent prisoners from constantly raping eachother and all the other abuse they do to one another, but cold showers? thats it, thats where we draw the line?

starlost 2008-12-21 10:32:30 PM

What of the "cruel and unusual punishment" right mentioned in the constitution?

The most cruel and unusual punishment of all is what we allow prisoners to do to each other.

Oh, and has anyone ever thought about what "cruel AND unusual" means? It means for it to be inappropriate it must be both cruel and unusual. So if its normal and its cruel then its fine.

Samsaran: CrispFlows: What of the "cruel and unusual punishment" right mentioned in the constitution?

I notice that it is cruel AND unusual and not cruel OR unusual. So, according to my analysis, if the punishment is merely cruel, but common place ... it is okay.

Not neccesarily so... Debtors prison was common but it was deemed cruel.
