Well, it ain't Christian-like, you hoodlum ;)

I wouldn't really call it Pagan. Solstice is a real astronomical event and marks the beginning of winter. Lighting candles in bags is hardly good or evil based on religion. They're not asking people to perform rituals on an altar.

I would, but then I heard of a guy who got his head sucked off by a Shoggoth after making a few. Don't mess with that stuff, man.

Celebrations of the winter and summer solstice (and the equinoxes) predate pretty much every religion on the planet.

We've been doing it since before we had a written language. Maybe before we had a spoken one.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 07:22:14 PM
Pagan solstice celebrations are older than (largely pagan) Christian celebrations.

Why does that matter? It doesn't.

Celebrate the season (or don't) as you like...but by all means don't have a fkn conniption fit if some cashier addresses you with a non-specific holiday greeting. It only singles you out as an uptight, thin-skinned jackass with a ridiculous persecution complex.

Living in the NW, I'm only TOO glad to have the days start getting longer again. Celebrating a thousands-of-years-old tradition is hardly a threat to my beliefs.

I think I'll light a luminary, spin a dreidel (tonight is the start of Hannukkah) and STILL keep my Christian faith. And whatever the rest of you believe or don't believe is fine with me - live your life as you want.

I'm all for more Solsticing. Celebrate the birth of Christ, the eight days of light, whatever you choose, but in the end, the days start getting longer for *everyone*.

/southern hemisphere, your mileage may vary.

Well, since Disney got rich off of playing pagans as the bad guys (witches, for starters) it's about time they paid some of it back.

Because Disney has animals acting like people. I heard this is supposedly against the teachings of the bible. The child rapist..err I mean polygamists also didn't like it.

Also Muslins(sic) hate Disney too. So much for that enemy of my enemy is my friend garbage.

As kids, we used to make luminarias like these, but for halloween instead; in place of a candle, we used a pint or so of horse feces. We would go round and place them on people's porches, ring the bell and run.

I'm waiting until we can celebrate Saturnalia as it was meant to be celebrated: presents, candles, feasts, naked orgies, gladiatorial games, sacrifices of bulls and goats to Saturn, stuff like that.

Especially the sacrifices and naked orgies.

Oh, please.

All traditions related to Christmas are pagan. The whole farking holiday is one big pagan celebration. Duh.

Don't believe me? Look it up in any encyclopedia. Including the New Catholic Encyclopedia.

Even if you don't know the history of the practices, just think about it. What, exactly, does the tree have to do with Jesus? Or Santa Claus? (Oh, yeah, that's the scripture where Jesus said we should LIE to our children, right?) And reindeer? Or a yule log? Mistletoe? The list goes on and on. Even the gift giving and greenery.

And, does it really make sense that shepherds were tending sheep at the time of Jesus' birth, at a time of year when it's too cold for shepherds to be out with their sheep in that area?

Like I said, a short amount of research proves the truth.

/Srsly, not a troll. Just sick of holier than thou "Christians"

Why do pagans refer to themselves as pagans? Isn't that kind of vague and/or pejorative? Do Christians in the middle east call themselves infidels?

DrewCurtisJr: Why do pagans refer to themselves as pagans?

Cause all the good names were taken.

I don't see how putting a candle in a bag is pagan though. Teaching them how to decorate the four corners of their alters would strike me as more paganesque.

Of course you are!

I've been to Yule celebrations at a coven in Delaware. It's too damn cold for me to be outside in December, regardless of what my friends are celebrating. I'll stick to Midsummer Sabbats from now on, thanks (though I don't get invited to them much anymore).

The real threat to our youth:

light them (a grown-up's job) and bask in the glow.

Parents should respect their children enough to let them light a candle by themselves. Teach responsibility, control, safety precautions and how to handle emergencies, don't coddle them.

I agree, but perhaps your kids could be "tought" spelling. I don't mind them playing with fire, but children who can't read are a danger to society.

Hahah because Winter is a scientific concept, right? Because 4 seasons is not a cultural construct, right? because religions don't involve anything real, right? Astronomers light candles all the time as part of their experiments! LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU I KNOW SCIENCE!!!!
