I have trouble sleepin' at night. I have bad dreams like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. Maybe I should get me a gun, an, an rob the Foodway so they'd send me home. I could shoot the manager while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense anymore. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. Not for an old crook like me.

Seriously, that is what parts of Detroit really do look like. I guess the land value must not be enough to make it worthwhile to knock down the burned out shells.

Once while I was living in Dearborn, a neighbor and fellow VW enthusiast had made a deal with some kid living in the city to trade a couple parts cars for one runner. So we had to move some cars, kid shows up at my friend's house. Takes one look at us (my friend was about 6'3" and quite massively built, I'm not a particularly small guy either) and says "we'd better get going, we gotta get you guys home before dark." We look at each other with that kind of "WTF?" look and he explains, "you're both white."

Oh.

Neighborhood did, in fact, alternate between standing houses and burned out shells. Kid was cool but dayam, you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

I live in Detroit proper and I will admit that there are some ROUGH parts. Like, Holy shiat is this still America? parts. But there are also some pretty decent parts. I live around Mexicantown and really love it. The neighborhood is really involved, there's a community garden project, people are cool with each other, very diverse and I'm close to a lot of awesome restaurants and grocery stores. Detroit changes from neighborhood to neighborhood, and street to street. You just have to know where you're going and not make any lingering stops.

This used to go on in Long Island, NY where I used to live. Ex-cons would commit petty crimes when it started getting cold out so they could have a warm place to hold out for the winter. They knew just what to pull so they could be out by spring.

As the city depopulates (from #4 in 1950 >2,000,000 to #11 at 900,000), it returns to nature, kinda.

Speaking of criminal:

Charging money to watch this team play football is clearly theft and should land that entire organization in jail.

Criminals in Maricopa Co. AZ probably tried the same thing to get out of the extreme summer heat....then the people elected Joe Arpaio and the criminals wound up sweating it out in tents getting nothing bologna and water in between pounding sand all day.

Maybe there could be a cold weather version of that concept?

There is so much unclaimed land in New Mexico and Arizona. Can't just ship all the homeless and criminals there. Let them make their own community. Maybe it would teach them something about respect for authority in the process. We must learn to use our available resources. It's like people recycling.

Remove all Republicans: Jaws_Victim: Doe sit surprise anyone that most black cities are the most crime ridden and run down cities in the country? Philadelphia, New Orleans (you can say a hurricane hit it, but we all remember before) and of course lovely Detroit.

The first sentence alone was enough. You weakened your point with the second one. Spelling would have helped too.

Detroit's biggest problem is a lack of stability in city government. Ever since the Republicans decided that going after Mayor Kilpatrick for minor indiscretions for political points, the city has been a disorganized mess. Once Obama gets in charge and stops the FBI and DOJ, things will get better.

Ah yes, republicans... I heard it was the boogeyman who went after poor Kwame. If people were making farce movies about how shiatty is was to live in detroit in the 80s, I think your point is slightly nullified.

Yeah, pull the Police and Fire Departments out while you're at it and everything will be all gumdrops, butterflies and unicorns.

You're lucky. The Detroit police have a habit of busting in the at location near/next to the one they were supposed to.

Yeah, but the people who are currently living in jail can't afford to live in those condos and lofts. I'd rather live in a nice warm prison than a nice cold street, especially if it was Detroit. Hell, even LA has been unusually icy the last couple of weeks.

That's because the real Detroiters would have had the robots dismantled and stripped before they had a chance to fight back.

How about giving Mexico a taste of it's own medicine. Offer the criminals the choice of voluntarily moving to Mexico (at night), or be shot.

I like this idea. Strip them of their citizenry. If anyone is caught on American soil without the proper paperwork, they be hanged. Shooting is not very ecofriendly. Felonies only though. I would hate to see someone deported for mopering.
