I think it would be more irony if we didn't all know this would happen.

Well, being a good farker, I immediately went to GIS to find a nice monster truck fail pic. I came by this and, in some odd way, it just seemed so fitting.

Just plain idiotic. I will buy an American car when there is a long term reputation of reliability. The Japanese car I've owned for the last 11 years has not broken down once. I never had such luck with the American cars I've owned. (Or German for that matter.)
I, personally, am not going to buy something out of some twisted Nationalistic pride.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 05:33:27 PM
Gee with thinking like this is it any surprise they're in trouble?

Cake Hunter [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 05:37:08 PM
Celebrating a bailout?

I'd also like to see the breakdown of the percentage of American parts and labor for each of the cars involved.

God, I hate car dealers.

Cake Hunter: I'd also like to see the breakdown of the percentage of American parts and labor for each of the cars involved.

I like how the tires for the monster truck cost $5,000 each. In other words, the set of 4 would've bought a Honda. Oh and the Accord is made in Ohio.

cambie [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 07:14:36 PM
Don't these dipshiat dealers plan anything properly? Any redneck who's ever been to a tractor pull can tell you that use a torch to cut all the frame support of the cars they plan to crush.

wallytacker 2008-12-21 07:32:29 PM
If the monster truck were a Toyota, it woulda worked.

deevo 2008-12-21 07:32:37 PM
This is for what purpose the fail tag was made.

hellbilly 2008-12-21 07:33:42 PM
It's good to know that all we have to do is put $20,000 worth of tires on an American SUV, and it's suddenly better than a Honda.

VwlssWndr 2008-12-21 07:34:52 PM
Buy American! Hondas are deathtraps! You'll only be safe the first seven times a monster truck runs over your car!

GO USA!

Tourney3p0 2008-12-21 07:35:33 PM
wallytacker: If the monster truck were a Toyota, it woulda worked.

The hydraulic hose that broke wasn't a stock part, nor is it likely to be a supported add-on. If a Toyota was used for the monster truck, the same hose would have broken.

K3rmy 2008-12-21 07:35:55 PM
Need a bailout to fix the monster truck?

moondo 2008-12-21 07:37:38 PM
I love Honda's cars. I've been wanting one ever since I saw a black and white advertisement from the 60's where a guy pushes a Honda car off a cliff. The car rolls and rolls as it falls and when it lands the guy comes running, hops in, and drives away. That advertisement made me a believer.

I guess the original poster should have said "If the dealership were Toyota, it woulda worked." Since the Chevy dealer clearly wasn't able to appropriately connect the hydraulics.

Seamer 2008-12-21 07:38:46 PM
We need a bailout to retrain all the mods - that is, to stop them greenlighting crappy headings.

Find the flaw!
and takes several times to finally crush Honda

somemoron 2008-12-21 07:39:10 PM
Huh. I just had to buy a new (used) car recently. I wanted the best bang for my buck.

It wasn't a Chevy.

It the same hose would have broken on a Toyota, it woulda worked anyway.

No, this is the thread where we bash conservative leader Ronald Regan for allowing foreign cars to become so much better than American autos during the early 80s.

Care to join, MIguy?

Most 20 year old Hondas are awesome, so I see no problem.

Also, the whole stunt reeks of bad taste, successful or not.

My Toyota 4wd 4-cyl pick up: 28mpg. 18 years. 280,000 miles, much of it on rough jeep track. Nothing but routine maintenance. Finally replaced the original water pump and alternator last year.

Honda CRV: Going on 140,000 mi. Not a single hiccup. Just scheduled maintenance.

My friend's Dodge Ram supercab with some godawful huge diesel cummings engine: $50,000. gallons per mile, not vice versa. 15,000 miles, a ton of drive train problems, even though it never hauled a trailer. (But his dog looks smokin' standing on the hay bale in back.)

That is all.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 07:42:47 PM
Nice work showing that, if it were to get into a crash with an American monster truck, the American monster truck would take damage while the Japanese car would be fine.

Also, nice work BUYING A CAR FROM JAPAN so you could demonstrate this point.

Dil Doe 2008-12-21 07:43:19 PM
Why is it that the same people who believe it's unpatriotic to buy a foreign car devote their lives to destroying the rights of the workers who build cars for domestic companies?

Gosling [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 07:45:02 PM
No, wait, I'm sorry.

The American bought TWO Japanese cars and ONE American car to make this demonstration. Well played, sir!

This is just a wild guess, but I suspect they already had the Honda, and it came from an previous owner that lived in the US. It's not like they bought a new one.

Fark that. I'm not ever buying an American car again.

They can't make anything we want to buy, so they're extorting money from us instead.

My 1984 Honda has 3 billion miles on it and I'm still on my first tank of gas. It also cured my cancer.

My friend has a Dodge that he's owned for 3 years and still hasn't been able to drive it off of the dealer lot because it explodes every time he starts it.

LOL I love these threads.

Oh, and I'm on my second Oldsmobile, 1992, about 138K miles on it. The first was a 1989, a damn warhorse and only got sold at 174K because we got tired of waiting for it to die.

Too bad that they no longer make Oldsmobiles.

Honda's Fukui

Honda President Takeo Fukui last week said the government should take action to halt the yen's rise. Every 1 yen gain against the dollar cuts Honda's annual operating profit by 18 billion yen ($201 million), according to the automaker. About 90 percent of Honda's revenue comes from overseas.

Companies are also struggling to obtain funding as the market turmoil dissuades investors from buying corporate debt. To help businesses get financing, the Bank of Japan last week decided to buy commercial paper for the first time.

Sales at home are unlikely to make up for the collapse in demand from abroad. Households, whose confidence is at a record low, pared spending in each of the eight months to October as wage growth stagnated and job prospects worsened.

Honda will be bankrupt in a year or so...

MacEnvy [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 07:51:08 PM
Gosling: Whoops. (Not that the overall point is diluted.)

Very true. I'm only exasperated because a coworker tried to convince me that Hyundai was a Japanese company the other night over dinner. The reason this boggled my mind is that this coworker used to work at a foreign auto dealership, and this is REALLY something he should have known already.

Hyundai, Kia, and Daewoo are all South Korean. After a series of mergers, they are all owned by the same parent company (Hyundai Heavy Industries).

ZeroPly 2008-12-21 07:51:36 PM
My 21 year old Honda Accord is awesome. It has over 250,000 miles on an original engine and transmission, and I've never had any problems with it. Last spring I drove it to the Half Dome summit in Yosemite without any problems. I laughed at all the stupid people who had to park their American made cars at the bottom and walk up using the cables.

oldsmobiles are for getting kids off your lawn with force.
its why they called it "old"smobile in the first place.

If you buy a car from Detroit after this, you're supporting extortion.

Dil Doe: Why is it that the same people who believe it's unpatriotic to buy a foreign car devote their lives to destroying the rights of the workers who build cars for domestic companies?

Workers want more money. Shareholders want more profit. It's a tug-of-war. Workers used to win this tug-of-war because shareholders didn't get paid unless stuff got made, but things have changed. Labor's much cheaper in other countries, after all, and folks here want to be middlemen and financiers.

Now, shareholders get paid whether the company succeeds or fails, so who cares about labor? There's no money in laboring, only in exploiting the labor of others.
